In addition, it's fairly clear that he just meant that an old white guy wouldn't understand a young hip guy like him :)rolleyes:), which is a far cry from calling someone the n-word. Seriously, do we have to explain this? His rant was extremely immature and ill-advised, but not because it was racist.

Now I have to step in at this point. Cant believe I am actually defending Nilay but here we go:

There is a difference between calling someone an old white dude or a "dirty ass n*gga).

First of all - Gassee is old and white. And secondly: Old and white is not persé a bad thing (even though it is meant to be bad in this occasion). Where as dirty ass n*gga clearly is. The word "dirty" alone is what makes it worse.

Pretty sure if he'd called Morgan Freeman out as an "old black man" along with a photo mocking him and went on about how irrelevant he is because he's an old black man, people would say it was racist and ageist to point out two things Morgan Freeman cannot control and criticize him for them.

If Gassé had said Patel was an Indian kid (along with a photo) and said his opinion was invalid because he was and Indian kid, people would accuse Gassé of being racist. And ageist.

Gassé only commented on fashion. Patel got deeply personal and he showed his true nature. He's an *******. Period.

Exactly this. It can't be acceptable one way, but not the other.

Give the guy a break, poking fun at a grown man's spiked bracelet is a really low blow! The audacity of Gasse!

I disagree. Nilay was clearly referring to the cliché of the old white -and boring- businessman. Now this is mean - but it is not racist. It does not imply that old white men were something lesser. Like would you call it racist if you called someone a hipster?

Mentioning any race is considered racist. Stop acting like you don't know that.

Even if you want to concede that it is racist in some way, that does not make it equivalent to all other forms of racism. Comparing it to the n-word is simply beyond the pale.

Gasse is just jealous that he can't pull off looking hip wearing a studded bracelet because he is an old white man unlike Patel who is young and edgy.

There more to racial issues than just the "n-word', which holds no significance in this circumstance. Believe it or not, racial prejudice can affect any ethnicity.

He brought "old white man" comment into the conversation to try and belittle him like he was superior and tried to devalue his statement by doing so in a "why should I listen to you" kind of way. There's no reason to bring race into the argument to begin with...but he did

You gotta love how a silly topic like this can turn into debate. Let's all just enjoy it for a good laugh.

I thought hipster was just shorthand for dirty hippy. :p

There, I fixed it for you.

"Patel is young, edgy, and brown" sounds perfectly normal because he is, well, brown, right? Riiiiight?

Being a minority does naturally make you more edgy! (Of course I'm just being sarcastic) I take it back what I said, this debate is also amusing. Perhaps you can now also debate if my statement was racist LOL

The quote is inherently racist. You can justify it all you like it brings race in to the equation where race is not needed. Thus: racism . Being black white or whatever has NO Bering on anything, from the context he used it he might as well said cracker

Regardless of people's opinions, the fact that a thread containing mostly mocking of another person (for whatever reason) has reached to 11 pages and remains at the top of the Apple Watch forum is depressing to me.

I use the word cracker as a term of endearment.

You probably shouldn't be on it then. I really hate to see anyone depressed :(

Edgy? Patel is fat too puffy to be edgy. He's pretty round, which means no edges, and losing one' school is, well, uncool.

You didn't sense any sarcasm in my post? You really shouldn't use words like that to describe someone over weight. It's just as bad as being racist, ha!

You have the right to disagree and to be wrong.
1. Hipster is not a race.
2. Of course his comments were racist. Tim Cook is white and 54. Does that make him a boring businessman?
3. Using a cliche is just an attempt to make one's racism acceptable. If I cite a cliche about another race to make a racist reference, it doesn't make it right.

So, it's cool for a younger Indian guy to rip on an old white guy because he's old and white?

No. It's not. If he'd called him out of touch, old school, etc. that would be the equivalent of calling Nilay a hipster.

He put himself out to be mocked. If he was a private individual who did not seek "celebrity," I agree that he'd be off limits.

Right. The fellow has shown a complete lack of discipline, so he is fat. He displays an undeniable sense of thin skinned arrogance, a childish attitude, and spewed hate towards mild criticism and you think calling him on it is racist.

We are doomed, no one can think anymore.
