What an attention-craving angry idiot.

Did you actually read the article?

Are you a dev?

When your app gets rejected because it happens to "stream" a podcast that contains a song is ***king absurd specially since this update was fixing a serious bug for international users.

You do understand that the app DOESN'T CONTAIN the album or the song. Just like it doesn't contain forum posts.

This retarded incident from Apple is exactly what happened with Tweetie 1.3 which was rejected because while being tested one of the twitter trends was f word. Apple might as well block safari while they are at it. It contains obscene content, no?

That was a pretty ****** good article. I *** especially like the **** part about the ******* ******. Hopefully Apple ****** gets their ***** ***** into a ***** and a ******** hand basket. I ******* miss the **** good ol' ****** days when I could simply call someone a ****** ***** who ***** way too many ****** with his ****** *** *** lollipop and ***** **** on top of a ***** ****** *** camel.

Allow me to disagree here. Who would you trust more that they are making an honest statement and you would be willing to discuss it with them and hear their points: A know attention seeking talentless celebrity like Paris or an honest developer? Of course the latter. So, talent here has everything to do. If Bod Dylan had qualms maybe you would listen to him say, because this guy doesnt pull cheap publicity stunts and instead voices an opinion and opens up a discourse. As simple as that.

Since I could verify Trent's claim myself, I don't care about the trustworthiness of whoever said it. Trent said the app was denied for allowing access to vulgar content. Fact. Apple is known to do this and it has been reported by several developers. Trent said that I can use Mobile Safari to view objectionable content. Fact. I can use Mobile Safari to go read some websites with swear words or look at porn. Trent said I can use Mail to receive objectionable content. Fact. I've had spam ranging from porno sites to boner pills.

It doesn't matter who states the facts as long as I can independently verify it myself.

Apple's never going to approve that.

And apparently you didn't read anything I've said in this forum, because Trent is neither part of a record company, nor being promoted/controlled by one, nor did he do this solely for publicity (he did it on his OWN site in his own forums, as I said before). Just because someone doesn't agree with your opinion about Trent Reznor when you have absolutely no idea what he's been doing lately (quite obviously) doesn't make them a little kid (as you so adamantly believe it does), nor does it make them wrong. Profanity was not the focus of his statement, it was just a piece of it, and you taking it out of context and pretending it was all the substance he had is an unacceptable level of discourse, because it's intellectual dishonest, and pretty myopic.

Pastorius, you have nick comprised of Ziggy Stardust and arguably one of the greatest base players ever Jacko Pastorius. I respect that. Record execs or no, he's getting the exposure he wants, so I am right, he did get the publicity he wanted as witnessed here. Moreover, focal point or not, I have had it with "rock stars" trying to play bad boys to win over fans with profanity, if Trent wants to drop the attitude and talk like anyone would I might listen. As is I am far too old for this trite.

Ok, fair enough that's your opinion, and I tend to agree with part of it, you have demonstrated a way to look at it that wasn't my initial reaction. However I still disagree with the arguments because what you get on an apple official shop it's their business, if you get kiddy porn in your mail is your business, so does that mean apple should allow kiddy porn in the app store? No. So the argument crumbles.

It does matter who states the facts if they are know publicity seekers and use profanity as a way to sell an image. Like I said PAris Hilton andsay Bob dylan say cant be put on an equal footing on whose opinion one would read, it's a short life and you cant give everyone the time of day, some are just not worth it, you don't have agree wth, I don't want to convince you, I am stating my opinion.

This is not about TRENT REZNOR. This is about the arcane approval process that Apple is using to review app submissions and updates. It is not only affecting him, but many other devs out there.

Whether you like trent or hate him is irrelevant. The app review process is seriously broken.

If you look at Trent's thoughts, posts, comments, etc. over the past couple of years you can see he's not saying these things to the mainstream he's letting his current fans know these thoughts and comments. He spent many years dealing with foolish record companies and now that he doesn't have to, he gets a little(okay, quite)mad when he runs up against the kind of crap Apple is pulling. I wouldn't call what he did a publicity stunt. But to each their own, I'm just saying in this case, I don't believe this is something for publicity.

Wow...

Trent posted to NiN's own forum. Not NiN's website, not social sites or whatever, not a news site, NiN's forum. To update the NiN community on the status of the NiN app and vent his frustration.
  1. How is that looking for publicity?
  2. How is that "playing bad boys"?
  3. How did you conclude that he wanted you to listen? (hint: he doesn't care about you)

The personal attacks on Reznor are pretty lame, he has worked to decentralize the music industry and put the music back in the hands of the people which will only make it better in the end. I don't know many other high profile bands who encourage their fans to remix their music.

Im a fan of apple and NIN, and I think apple is in the wrong here. As to the wording of Reznor's statement, I have a dollar on him not giving a ****. :D

Well, thank you for noting about Jaco Pastorius and Ziggy Stardust. Completely irrelevant, but thank you.

Trent is in the entertainment business. Even if you do think that he doesn't swear in his personal life, and he only does it to "attract the impressionable kiddies," it doesn't have anything to do with anything. He made and makes good points, he does good things for the music industry and his fans (remix.nin.com, this app, free albums, open camera policy for new tour, et cetera). Jaco Pastorius also used profanity, in recordings, and so did David Bowie. You don't seem to have a problem with them, do you? This is the real world. I've already pointed out how absurd the idea that profanity = less intelligent is. It's all superstition. People swear. Everyone from Trent Reznor to my boss to my fellow students at Berklee to that super-Christian guy down the street to the well-read and highly-intellectual lawyer father of my best friend to me, and probably to you, atleast sometime in your life. Get over it.

You're only right so long as your assumption is right - which you can't prove. You can't prove that he wanted the publicity so you can't be right that he got what he wanted.

I can prove he did because instead of speaking like a civilized person he chose to use cussing and having an attitude of the anti-authoritarian. It's almost as good as direct proof. I can also prove that by way of majority as most rock stars are attention craving to the hilt. So to a good % of certainty I can prove that. I can't 100% prove either that paris hilton didnt leek the tape of her having sex, but to a good % everyone can judging by her former and later life.:apple:

I agree completely. A kid would have an iPhone and iTunes account by one of two ways:

1. The kid has his own part time job and pays for his phone and wireless plan and his own apps.

2. The parents buy the iPhone, plan and apps for the kid.

Scenario one, if the kid is mature enough to hold down a job, they're mature enough to hear a few swear words. Scenario two, if you're buying everything for the kid, then don't buy them the iPhone, or buy them the iPhone and don't let them download apps.

Doesn't bode well for Apple's taking over nintendo as the best handheld now does it? ;)

No, because that would be illegal. There's nothing illegal about swear words.

You don't have to read it, but that doesn't mean that they CAN'T make good points. The likelihood of Paris Hilton saying something intelligent are slim (at least based on what we know about her) and I wouldn't read her opinions either.. BUT that doesn't mean that she's incapable of making a valid point... all it means is that I wouldn't get to read it... her point might still be valid (as is Trent's regardless of it you read).

As for the app's being Apple's business, you're right.. they can control what we get on their store. The problem with YOUR point that I'm not sure you can (or have) explain(ed) is this... Apple allows us to download web-browsers (their business) and I can use those browsers to obtain offensive material. Apple did not allow the NIN update (their business) and I can use it to obtain offensive material... how is that logical? The app itself had no questionable content but instead was a means to get the content (as is the web browser that Apple DOES allow).

@Ziggy, I noticed your nick because it's called rapport, that's what human beings to as a means of relating, I didn't say it for it's "relevancy". You will not convince me and I am not trying to do so either, I respect your opinion, maybe if I were in your shoes I would agree with it even, but I am in my shoes and that's the way I see it. Simple as that.

And yet your assumption that using profanity has anything to do with being civilised or intelligent is still false...

Whether you hit your thumb with a hammer and say "****!" "Frack!" "Goddammit!" "Skidoodle!" "****!" "Sonofabitch!" "Moose farmer!" They are all expressing your anger/frustration at having hit your thumb. NONE of them makes you more or less intelligent. That is the most childish argument I've ever heard.

Back on topic, the app's dev and NiN forum admin contributed to the NiN forum thread:

The objectionable content referenced in this email is "The Downward Spiral". Since the app is live on the App store, please make the necessary changes to the application as soon as possible, and resubmit your binary to iTunes Connect. Thank you
v1.0 is live. v1.0.3 got rejected due to content yet the app has no content in it. this was mainly a stability release to fix the bug that crashes the app for international users. the bug was fixed 24 hours after 1.0 went live and we have been waiting for apple to approve it ever since. meanwhile the app continues to get a growing number of 1 star ratings from international users understandably frustrated by the bug. but looks like our hands are tied.

apple is not allowing us to make the current app more stable because there is "objectionable" content online (yes on the internet). so we are essentially not allowed to fixed bugs unrelated to the issue.

Now, "The Downward Spiral" the album is not available anywhere in the iPhone app. The song "The Downward Spiral" I believe is in a podcast that can be streamed to the app.
we removed the song "The Downward Spiral" from the server, hoping to appease apple and get this bug fix through. however i have yet to receive a reply.
(emphasis mine, and I'll note that I'm a "victim" of this very issue)

But again, you're using opinion to prove fact. It's your opinion that swearing = attempt at publicity, not fact. That is nowhere near "as good as direct proof". You can't just say that most rock stars are attention craving and then assume that we'll just believe it's true. What proof is there that they're all like that? It's just public opinion (that is shared by a lot of people but that doesn't make it truth).
That's exactly the case with Hilton. Of course you can't prove that Hilton leaked the tape and to most people she probably did - but that is not enough to claim it as truth and certainly isn't enough to come to a conclusion based on an assumption (regardless of how many share the assumption)

From this one interview alone, you get a good understanding of Trent's views and passion for trying to change the music business. He's making less money than on a major label, but helping to change the industry. And the interview just happens to show he's intellectual and doesn't have to use swear words to get his point across.

http://digg.com/dialogg/Trent_Reznor

And he invested $100,000 to have the NIN iPhone app created. And it just happens to be free. This is obviously the sign of a greedy, attention loving rock star.
