and no, the charge port on the bottom is the correct position. every actual designer knows this. it's legitimately the best position given the circumstances. people who keep saying apple wouldn't put it on the front due to aesthetics reasons can't explain why apple put it on the front of the keyboard and trackpad and not on the mouse. maybe if they thought about it for 5 secs, they would know why
Well, thank God they ditched the Apple car!

So, the Magic Mouse is great for EVERYTHING but that idiotic charge port location. I even think the ergonomics are great on it, it's an incredibly comfortable mouse for me to use.

But putting the charge port on the bottom is just plain stupid. It's absolutely the wrong place, it should be on the end of the mouse so it could be connected to the computer while it's in use. Any "designer" who says otherwise is an idiot who should NEVER be allowed to design a product again. It wouldn't even look bad. And it's not like Apple is adverse to notches even when they not only look awful but actually impair functionality (looking at you, idiot designers of iPhone and Mac screens) so that's not the issue any more.

It needs to be fixed.

I have been using the Logitech MX Anywhere 3 for years with my Mac's. It is definitely more ergonomic that the Magic Mouse. I do use the Apple mini keyboards with my Mac's and I do like the ones with Touch ID. I use the MX Anywhere 3 and MX Keys Mini with my Windows and Linux computers.

I’m sure there have been mousses made at Apple. They have cafeterias at the campus, no?
Apple has probably made more mousses than mouses. Sure, they made some mouses in the Fremont plant decades ago, but they haven't made a mouse since long before it closed. I don't think Apple has made a mouse since the M0100, and probably only early production on those. But the cafeterias are open every day.

Nobody will believe me here but Magic Mouse was the mouse that fixed my carpal tunnel. Yes, that horrible unergonomic mouse. A few years ago I had to stop using mouse altogether for a month or so and since then I can’t use other mouse. My hand hurts after just a few minutes if I use gaming or those supposedly ergonomic mouses. I actually like that my hand sits low on the Magic Mouse because it feels more natural than having my hand high and kinda twisted.

I love my Magic Mouse. I still have the one with AA batteries. It's lasted longer than any other mouse I've had in my life (Besides my Atari ST mouse with cleanable rubber mouse ball) I also refuse to install ANYTHING Logitech on a Mac because it loves to bring with it so much extra baggage-ware as if I was on a PC or something.
I still use my Magic Mouse with the original rechargeable AA batteries, when I ignore the prompts that my USBC mouse is going dead.

A quick charge that lasts a few minutes will allow the mouse to work for hours. He could even let it charge whilst making his coffee or visiting the bathroom.
This is my feeling, I use an MX at work but I was using the Apple Mouse before and it was pretty rare when the battery would die. When it would die, I would just plug it in and go the vending machines or go socialize with colleagues and when I would come back it would almost be fully charged or close enough to get me through the day to charge overnight.

It's a mouse, not a handrest. I think that's the problem with everybody claiming the MM is not ergonomic, they're trying to rest their hand on it like they do with one of those crappy asymetrical mice. I had to look up the MX Master 3, and if I ever had to touch one of those it would be going across the room and as far through the wall as I can throw it. It's not as evil as those idiotic shark fin mice (you've seen them, they're advertised to help carpal tunnel, they keep your hand turned sideways. Those and trackballs are part of why I always have a small wired mouse in my bag, gotta have something to plug in when the user has an unusable mouse.)

If you're using a mouse properly, you'll never feel the shape of it on your hand, because you're not resting your whole hand on it.

Logitech has always been a mixed bag, over the years they've built some good mice and some bad ones. That MX Master 3 is one of the worst of the worst from them. Apple has only ever built one bad mouse - the hockey puck. No surprise that Steve Jobs was partially responsible for that idiocy getting out the door. But even the hockey puck could be fixed pretty easily, just remove the colored plastic bits and it's not round any more.

TL;DR: If you think the Magic Mouse is not ergonomic, and not in fact one of the most ergonomic mice available, you are, in fact, holding it wrong.

It would be great if Cook did use the MX Master 3, though. Maybe he would love using a mouse with a front-facing USB-C port so much that he would make the Magic Mouse's port finally not be on the bottom. Hey, we can dream!

Why do so many people want to see an ugly port that they use just a few times a year? No port will ever be small enough that it won’t be ugly. The design of the Magic Mouse is Apple at its best and I would be concerned if Apple someday followed the herd and made the port visible. Do Mac fans really want Apple to become more like Logitech?

As for ergonomics, you don’t want your wrist off the desk, which larger mice force you to do.

I believe you. It’s because the Magic Mouse allows your arm and wrist to remain on the desk, which reduces the strain on your shoulder. We hired an ergonomic consultant once who took photos of us working. Among her findings, I had my arms and wrists elevated, causing shoulder strain. A wrist rest fixed that for the keyboard and the Magic Mouse best addresses this for cursor control. I never liked mouse wrists rests because of how much you need to move your arm.

lots of better options out there over the Apple keyboard and mouse. lets be honest. been a long time since I stuck with what came with my Mac.
I use a wired Logi mouse (Apple's mouse is horrible), but there are no third-party keyboards with Touch ID.

Interesting. I fixed mine by using an MX Veritical Mouse

My thoughts here are thus;
How long had you been using a 'normal' mouse for?
Had all those, months/years/decades been with a Magic Mouse is it possible that you may have had a bout of RSI or similar from that device?
For me, my hand feels closer to and spends more time in its relaxed position when on a mouse that is shaped less like the magic mouse.

I just want to say that the Magic Mouse is the most unergonomic mouse I've ever used.

Since 1984 Macs have shipped with mice that can be used by left handers and right handers alike. That's why it is the way it is, otherwise mice would have to ship in a separate box for both kinds of customers.

Since 1984 (maybe earlier if Lisa counts).

And here we are in 2024 having this useless conversation. If you want a gaming mouse or multi button mouse you can go buy one.

Or...............they could have made both.
Your argument doesn't add up either;

Simple mice work for both left and right handers.

Funnily enough, this was the excuse that I and many of my colleagues used when explaining the puck mouse to customers back when that was the thing that came with all desktop Macs. "It has a bump on the middle of the button to keep your hand oriented. It is meant to be gripped by your fingertips instead of resting your palm. Orient the mouse then curl your fingers over to keep it in the correct position and it works great." And actually, it did work quite well.

The thing is, though, that "correct positioning" lessons don't matter. As soon as you have to give a tutorial on how to use a mouse correctly, you've already lost the "it just works" battle. Because that thing that is supposed to be second-nature and work right out-of-the-box doesn't actually work intuitively.

We sold a lot - and I mean A LOT - of Macally mice in the late 90's and early 00's.

And if Logi made computers they would probably ship it with that.

I didn't make an "argument". It's just a simple 40 year old fact that Apple shipped a mouse for left and right handers because it not only goes with their simple design ethos but also cuts shipping costs. It's not the most ergonomic mouse but a symmetrical mouse is the only way to ship a mouse with a computer for both user types.

For the majority of PC history left handed customers were pissed off that PCs shipped with right handed mice. They were forced to buy a left handed mouse separately. It wasn't until online stores gave them an option that they could have a computer shipped with a left handed mouse, but even then some PC makers don't have the option.

It really depends on which mice were being included with the PC. The vast majority of PCs that shipped with mice shipped with symmetrical mice for this very reason. We're talking dating back to at least the 1980s. By default, the buttons were assigned so that the "main" click was the left button, so that obviously was meant for right-handed users, but even in the days of Windows 3.1 (and probably even earlier than that), most GUIs had the option to swap the buttons for left-handed people.

The whole "catering to left-handed people" schtick was Apple's own marketing around including only a single-button mouse with their computers, even after Mac OS itself gained contextual menus.

But yes, including a right-hand only mouse with a PC is not ideal. Most PC manufacturers didn't do this (many clone builders, on the other hand, often included the MS Intellimouse, probably because it was popular and MS was selling them to OEMs for very cheap - that meant lefties had to shell out for a different mouse).

I think you misunderstand the job listing though. Apple requesting minimum qualifications of Excel proficiency doesn’t mean that Apple is using Excel. It just means that Excel proficiency is minimum skills they are looking for. If you are proficient in Excel, those same skills can be transferred over to a different suite of software services.

There is no way that Apple is using Excel for its global accounting, tax, compliance and regulatory requirements. Apple uses SAP (and/or other ERPs, but seemingly SAP primarily).

Excel is fine for many things (I have Excel open right now), but it’s not a replacement for an actual ERP. And it’s especially not a replacement for an actual ERP when we are talking about one of the largest companies to ever exist.
Ok, I understand your post with one of your points being: SAP > Excel > Numbers 👍
