I bought my device based on what I wanted at the point of sale.
A combination of hardware and software.

I should have the right to use my device as I so wish
But you don't. You're limited by iTunes, by your carrier, by the law...

as its not apple or anyone for that matter who has the right to change the way my device works, looks or behaves without my permission.
Isn't user permission needed to install iOS 7 anymore?

When I purchased my device it included the software.
I paid for that software, and no one has the right to remove or replace it.
Unless its agreed. Since I paid for it, and I am the agreed owner of that piece of software.
This is interesting. Can you point to anything that states that you in fact purchased a copy of iOS and/or a license to use, and return to after having accepted an upgrade, that specific iOS version, when you purchased your phone?

As it stands right now, apple are not offering a free OS upgrade.
They are offering a OS trade in, labelled as an update.
But if the OS itself changes its name, then it is no longer an update but a new piece of software. Making Apples removal or possability to no longer allow sign original purchased software look like a felony. Given the owner had purchased it in good faith.
So if they would've called it iOS 6.7, you wouldn't have any problems with calling it an upgrade/update?

Three day window, just saying.

During which the Apple servers were being overloaded due to huge demand and a decent/stable connection was not that easy to be established. But that's besides the point.

How exactly does the window possibly being let's say 3 weeks instead of 3 days long affect YOU personally?

As I said earlier, the loudest voices are always the unhappiest ones but they are often always also the minority.

I don't see why people are taking a tantrum over an OS update that you have a choice to upgrade to or not. I don't buy that people, especially some in this thread, did not know about the UI redesign in iOS 7.

I refuse to believe you people don't read any other tech sites, use any social sites, or have friends or family with iPhones (every family has a tech nerd who's plugged in to all the news. I am my family's! :p).

To claim ignorance on a level that suggests Apple "tricked you" with iOS 7 is ridiculous. And to top it all off, there's details of what iOS 7 contains within the opening page of the update description. If you didn't read it and blindly pressed update than that is your fault, not Apple.

Doesn't affect me, I am perfectly happy with iOS 7 on my 4s and iPad 4th Gen and find this incessant whining over numerous threads somewhat monotonous.

I am simply pointing out to the OP that the window was three days, not two as he mentioned. And, while the servers were hammered, you could simply retrieve your iOS 6 ipsw file (which iTunes moves to trash once you download iOS 7) and restore to iOS 6.

The servers were not hammered to the extent you couldn't downgrade on the 20th or 21st of September. I updated my wife's iPad 3 and iPhone 4 and she didn't like the performance drop on her devices so I restored and activated via iTunes without any delay on the final and third day of the signing window being left open.

Simple.

Whilst agreeing with you in general, you're being a bit categoric...

For instance, my wife absolutely hates it when I start talking about upgrades and whatnot. I showed her iOS 7 after the preview, and again after the release, and I know for a fact there have been pretty large articles about it on news sites she reads. Yet, she was surprised when she picked my phone up and wondered how I managed to change the icons ;)

Also, when apple haven't changed more than fairly minor details in the UI for a good six years, it's not really hard to imagine people have become confident in what they can expect when pressing that button.

That being said, I agree that people have a personal responsibility in knowing what they're accepting, but it's not hard to understand those who simply went with it because they never could have expected this kind of drastic graphical change.

Simple, as in your wife could have figured it out without any help from you?

I don't see why you are taking a tantrum over the simple request that people have an option to freely downgrade an iOS to a previous version.

No matter what the reason for such a request might be (and yes the reason is often user ignorance), Apple's decision not to allow such an option is completely arbitary (as has been pointed out many times in this thread and elsewhere) and should not be supported by anyone, period.

No tantrum here, I am putting my points across in a calm and collected manner. No cursing, no ranting. See the OP for an example of a tantrum. I also suggest looking up the definition of the word as you are misusing it on this occasion.

I am just expressing my view that people are factually wrong (such as yourself with your unable to downgrade due to server overload) and making a massive stink over something they had a choice over.

Apple have closed the signing window of the outgoing version of iOS every year on its most recent devices and no one cared. A new UI and people start throwing hissy fits.

First world problems eh?

So you have been under a rock. Ever hear of windows 8 and consumers desire to have 7 instead?

Microsoft have always allowed downgrades, no matter the OS or the demand for it. I guess it is just a nice thing to offer if you're not ready to get used to the new OS. But unlike Apple, Microsoft supports its older software.

You should seriously give iOS 7 a chance. Be open to changes. My grandma updated her iPhone 4S to iOS 7. I just checked in on her after a few days and she's loving it.

Is questioning an arbitrary Apple decision a first world problem? Yes.

Is belittling the legitimacy of said questioning a totally moronic and unproductive thing to do on an Apple support forum? Absolutely.

Why is it "moronic and unproductive" THIS year though?

Nothing has changed in Apple's policy.

Don't like iOS 7, don't update. It's that simple. And as I said I refuse to believe every person who said they didn't know iOS 7 was a complete overhaul has no access to any tech news whether it's online, friends and family or even page one of the iOS 7 OTA page on their device itself.

These moaners are clever enough to surf net, find sites and sign on to the forums, where they can moan about anything and everything under the sun - but claim ignorance over not know anything about iOS 7 UI...... Hard to believe.....

I guess they crave for some attention in virtual world, perhaps which they are lacking in real world???

Honestly unlike many of you on this board I was not closely following the development of the new io7. But I AM like the majority of consumers who trust that an upgrade will not seriously alter the product the purchase... They certainly should be able to bring the product back to its previous state ... To not allow that tramples the rights of the consumer

Oh shut up, will you.

No one held a gun to your head and forced you to upgrade. You still have the same product you bought and it still does what it needs to do.

It's cute that you think you can change how Apple does things or start a movement.. or whatever you call it.

Really? Ever tried installing an older version of windows over a newer one? (No need to answer, it's obvious you haven't.)

It's "moronic and unproductive" ALWAYS, not just this year.

Again, the reason why anyone would want to downgrade, or how they even came to the point where a downgrade is required, for whatever reason, is not the point. Yes I agree people are dumb. But accidents happen, too.

Point is, how exactly would allowing people the option to downgrade, affect or endanger your own existence, your productivity, relationship with your phone, your wife, or whatever?

There have been rants over rollback every year, even with smaller upgrades.

I like how you ignored what I said in order to continue your ignorant rant over ignorant rants...

Simple, as in your wife could have figured it out without any help from you?

LOL, exactly. :D

But seeing as Apple is always right his wife must be a chief desktop support engineer with a Cisco cert at her belt too, at the least. :p

Users should have been known that iOS7 is a major overhaul. They will, however, not know how it performs on their phones just by reading that. We don't get the opportunity to first try it out and then revert back if we don't like it or until the software gets less buggy. The animations on the iPhone 4, for instance, are excruciatingly slow. How were users supposed to know that in advance?

I agree that a research should have been made before upgrading to a new generation of iOS.
See some videos, you will either like or dislike it, take your time, don't rush to upgrade on the release date (as you probably did because you were excited and now you regret it).
That what apple can do IMO is to increase the time for downgrade, something like a month. Because now for 2 days you can't even compare a major thing, the average battery consumption in a new OS.

Really???

Nice to see this thread is still sledding uphill...

How's the "Movement" going?

:apple:

Everyone here is talking about "If you don't like it , why did you upgrade ?"

How the hell do people know about performance issues ( battery etc. ) without upgrading on their device ?

The argument that Apple don't allow downgrades because of security updates sounds logical, but then why do they continue to sign some old firmwares? For example, on the 3GS you can still downgrade to iOS 4.

Not to the average iOS user actually.

Which people who spend all day on forums just DO NOT get. The average user has no idea when things like this are coming. I know many people with iPhones, and when it was released is when they found out about it.

I am not saying that is a good or bad thing, but it's important to have some perspective.

Which is exactly why I showed a number of links showing that it was also shown and announced via the mainstream media. BBC, USA Today, and the Telegraph are all widely read news outlets which covered the story. Anyone going to the Apple website to get to the store had a button at the side announcing iOS7 and showing screenshots and demos.

Two of my most technologically incompetent friends also saw it.

Go to YouTube? For almost the whole of June there were 'youtube recommended' videos with demos of iOS7.

People knew it was coming. It wasn't that they hadn't announced it and it just appeared in the post!!

They could watch the numerous hands on videos found with a simple search on YouTube and try to gauge reaction to owners of the same device on these very forums.

And experience also tells you that older devices, especially those on the lowest rung, will struggle performance wise.
