If I custom order an iMac (high model with extra graphics ram) on the Apple Online Store when its released (for education) can I pick it up in store?

Not sure what this had to do with my post, but yes you can have BTO models shipped to store for pick up.

----------

At the Feature-Specific Requirements - AirPlay Mirroring tab it says iMac (Mid 2011 or newer). It says the same for the Mac Mini.

Unfortunately all that means is that they're believing there will be new models of the iMac and Mini eventually. Doesn't really say much about how imminent they are.

I still think we see them within the next 8 days.

Something I've thought about doing but haven't pulled the trigger:
I'm a Silver Rewards member with Best Buy. So I've got that nice 45-day return policy. I've considered buying a 2011 iMac, and returning on day 44, and then buying an rMBP, and returning on day 44, repeat until 2012 iMacs are out. It's kinda mean to the store and a bit of a hassle for me, but it crossed my mind...

Returns should be 60 days now... It is a pain though

The good old days of my ZX Spectrum 48k,I remember totally sold out at Xmas and I had to wait till February for it...
Games on cassette,10 minutes to install....

But I would swap it all for my nice 2012 iMac....a 48k computer sounds mad now, think our kettle has more K than that...lol

I know what you mean,i remember my Vic 20 and my Commodore 128
then the fantastic Amiga 500...Altered the beast,Lemmings,Gp by Crammond,Stunc Car Racer,the Last Ninja,Golden Axe..wow..

I was browsing around on the OS X Mountain Lion page when something caught my eye:

http://www.apple.com/osx/specs/

It would not make sense to have that on the website until october I guess.

I guess I am just doing what most of us are doing, trying to find evidence for an imminent update...

I'm sure the purpose of that is to exclude older models of iMac i.e. the 2010 iMac hardware lacks something required for Airplay where as the 2011 model and anything that follows are capable.

Not trying to be a downer, but based on previous apple updates we will see an updated imac in october. In 2011 feb apple release mbp thunderbolt, 3 months later the imac thunderbolt.

The mbp retina , mbp and mb air was already release on wwdc, i'm not sure apple would release a new hardware update in 1 months after that. Imo either they update the imacs on wwdc or wait 3-4 months to update the entire mac line to keep up with the first updated hardware.

Example:

Feb 2011 mbp (laptop line)
May 2011 imac (desktop line)
July 2011 mac mini (desktop line, apple want to push for thunderbolt)
Oct 2011 silent mbp update

I've bought 27 3.1 imac once i saw the announcement at wwdc, so dont keep your hopes up for july release.

Wrong. Apple is losing money on the imac 2011 its smart of apple that they release it with Ml more people will buy. And they know fan/new who want to buy a imac 2012. And not least the back to school offer people is going to take.

It is possibel its not going to releas in the 24-30 july. But i think its a smart move to do it. I am just saying.. Like last yeare they releaset it with lion so why not the imac and mac mini with ML.

Well this sort of sucks...I would love to reason why I think it's not true, but things like this seem to usually be spot on. I still don't need a new machine now, so I'll probably continue to wait. I can save a bit more money for more features like a large SSD. Bleh...

A lot of people in need of an upgrade could "save" money with USB3 peripherals...over the ridiculous thunderbolt prices.

Apple is being stupid.
Not offering the latest hardware--at least as a BTO option--until 4-6 months after its release is dumb business.

I don't get it.

Buy a retina display or buy something significantly outdated.
Great options.

Well if you look at that logic, that means apple was losing a lot of money when they didn't launch a new phone in june last year.... for the back to school offer, i'm thinking that lots of this college students would prefer a laptop than a desktop, no ?

I'm sure any company would think about revenue first, but knowing apple with their cult like leader and their obsession with making great products, i'm convince that they care about their customers and making money probably in no 2 or 3 on the list, plus they have $70bn in the bank that's got to be a huge advantage.

last year apple releases mac mini with lion, i'm guessing apple wants a fast adoption for the thunderbolt. and I always see the mac mini as the "left over" parts hardware, like usually the mini uses 1 generation behind of other macs in terms of hardware such as processor, gpu, etc.

I do would like an imac 2012 refresh, but with logic and looking at the things apple have done in the past, 24-25 july new imac seems unlikely.

Missed Opportunity

If Apple doesn't release at least a spec update of the iMac along side the Mountain Lion update, then they have missed an opportunity to showcase their latest and greatest software on the latest and greatest desktop. I will be surprised if they do not do a spec update, but not shocked.

Alas, I agree. It's just not going to happen this week, is it really? By now we normally have inventory numbers and the like...and if it doesnt happen this week, there is less than 10% probability it will happen on the 30th IMO

If you don't play games and couldn't care less when programs start or finish... Can I interest you in my 2007 iMac? $1700 seems fair if you're willing to pay original retail for outdated technology.

Patience is a virtue, something which all generations since the beginning of time never appreciate when they're young. I recently replaced our eight year old notebook simply because it was dying not because it was slow. I purchased my 2011 iMac last year when the model was new but would happily buy it now if I needed a computer. Why not if it will do what one wants and the intention is to keep it for years to come.

Until Apple comes more clear on the iMac's, they will see no more desktop money from me in the form of a ML upgrade. I'm not going through the hassle of downloading and installing only to have the new iMac's come out in 6 weeks.

I didn't mean to quote you , sorry but thanks for the answer!!! :)

I went through the add to cart thing just as a test and it went the whole way through to enter post code to get a postage cost so I didn't see any option for instore pickup - that's why I asked :)

Cheeky question: do you pay in store on pick up or online. Might just order online when they get released - save me carrying the big lad! :)

You pay online. You just go to the store to pick it up if that's what you picked. It's a good option if you don't want UPS dropping a box in front of your house when you're not there or if you think you might want some assistance getting it set up before you take it home.

ROFL!!!

Buy a share of a publicly traded corporation and attend a stockholders meeting sometime.

Trust me we are going to see a spec bumb in this week or two. Apple is not stupid to wait to october and release it with iphone 5 and ipad mini ( if mini is true) if they do imac will get in the shaddow and iphone 5 and mini will get be sold out and imac probley whoud sell mutch.. Trust me we will see a update soon. And is just say agine just think about what they did with lion:)

what every corporate company that doesn't ? apple streamline their suppliers, buy a bulk of memory at a price, deliver products straight from the factory, etc.. they buy cheap and sell it at a max price = profit

but my judgement is based on apple range of products portfolio, most of them are a winner to me, that's why i'm convince they care about their customers.

well if its just an imac spec bump i'm sure it will not take the spotlight from the iphone announcement. but we will see in a week or two.

cheers

I'm starting to think that a bad idea. It's obvious Apple is going "high rez" It's just a matter of time on the imac. Developers already starting to make "retina apps" you can see where this is headed. Just like the PPC mac, not any time soon mind you, but if you buy a new IMAC even on Wednesday with Ivy bridge, usb3..etc.... but no retina? your buying brand new tech that is already obsolete. Project 2-3 years ahead everything will be high rez, everything. You can totally see that we are at a cusp of a new tech run. Think about it, if your icons alone are 1024x1024 what kind of things can you do just to that icon. I'm not even talking about app it's self, no just the icon. I'm talking crazy amount of inlays..switches...etc. We are talking about 3d with no glasses. Floating displays. Imagine clicking on a icon, what looks like fire explodes to the ceiling and all your photos drop down surrounding yourself 360 style. The possibility are endless. Remember, it's the GPU now, not the CPU where we have our limits.

Also it's pretty obvious what the ITV is all about. It's all about 3840x2160. Another thing is painfully clear MANUFACTURING CAPACITY

Of course Apple will go Hi Rez on iMac sooner or later. Who know's when. There is always something new to "wait for" but at some point you either stop waiting and buy or just keep treading water. I'm done treading water. I can hold off a few more days but that's it.

If there is nothing new now and they have an update in Oct I can always sell mine on eBay and get about 90% of the price of what I paid. Apple's aren't like Buick's! Once you drive out of the showroom you don't loose 50% of the value.

So now Appleinsider has picked up an analyst report that primarily focuses on the 13" rMBP, to say the following on iMac refresh. "...iMac refreshed model could debut close to the end of September but qualifies the statement by saying indicators from the supply chain point to a later release". That's appleinsider and 9to5 saying the same thing...coupled with lack of inventory numbers and/or other leaks, I am switching off until the autumn...

That leaves the mini... No display issues, no excuse not to update it (except good old Apple spite).

Good point, well made. I think I may just have to reconsider my plan because (a) I do not desire a retina iMac and (2) the mac mini does offer some advantages like being able to upgrade more frequently as selling it (and sending it on to buyers) is much easier...If the new mac mini mid-range comes with a half decent GPU and SSD as standard then, I'll max the BTO of the HDD and pull the trigger tomorrow. Can't be bothered wating any more. Besides, I am sure a redesigned iMac will be full of bugs, so can happily wait to the next iteration to buy that...

I have the 'I've waited this long long, so may as well wait longer' thoughts going through my head.

I suppose if I wait I can save more, and get a better Mac when it comes out. I will still check intently tomorrow, but someone with this track record saying this O don't expect anything. Possibly the mini's released.

I think we can expect a larger update than a spec bump - no other reason for such a delay. so that makes it even harder to just buy the current, knowing that in a couple of months you probably are gonna hate yourself for it.

----------

Yesterday I would have said 80% chance of no imacs in July, by gut feeling. Now I would say 95% :( nothing indicates a new imac around the corner - and we have multiple claims from various places of an october release.

Unless the report of "screen lamination issues" is true which could easily push the date back to September or October.
