For someone who grew up with black and white t.v. a few seconds here and there hardly matters to our generation. Besides I always use "mac sleep" so the startup is more or less instant anyway. I read War and Peace the other month so I'm sure you get my drift?

I grew up with B&W TV too, so I guess we're of the same generation. But I want an SSD in my next iMac, along with USB3, a faster CPU, and better graphics. I figure at this point of my life a few seconds represents a larger percentage of the time I have left than it would if I were younger. :)

The brain changes as one ages, and it affects ones perception of the passage of time. I suspect this is the reason that mrlanky is ok with a slow computer.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Time_perception#Long-term

In an experiment comparing a group of subjects aged between 19 and 24 and a group between 60 and 80 asked to estimate when they thought 3 minutes had passed, it was found that the younger group's estimate was on average 3 minutes and 3 seconds, while the older group averaged 3 minutes and 40 seconds,[13] indicating a change in the perception of time with age

The sad thing is that he was attributing this biological symptom of his advanced age to some sort of character trait that had to do with his personality and the way that he was raised.

I hope you get what you want or you get what you need.

If you think it's "sad", then why are you doing it?

Sorry but we are talking about an iMac update that could happen very soon, not 3-5 years in the future.

That's your problem, I'm not talking 3-5 years. I'm talking about 3-5 months. Why buy a machine that they are already making apps that won't work on it. Hoping for A spec refresh Wednesday is moronic at best.

I'm bound to be unlucky every time I'm buying an iMac - it's kinda strange. I buy all things Apple...almost :) But the only machine I like to spend a LOT of cash on is the iMac. Last time I bought an iMac was in may 2009 - and it was released almost 3 months later than average. Now, I've saved up a lot of cash to buy a new one - this time I decided to just go all out and choose "yes please" on every BTO offer apple will offer me....and what happens, they are later than ever before...?!? I think from now on I will choose to buy sooner rather than later, I'll buy a new machine before I need one, just so that I don't enter this shi_tty loophole once again....

Sorry for pointless post, but now even this forum doesn't seem to move fast enough with rants - I need the rants to get by.

Apple spend so much time telling how their machines changes lives of people, how blind people can run the forests, etc... what about me ?? what about the self centered hardware geeks with too much cash burning in their pockets...they should not be forgotten either!!

6 apple stores around my areas say july 26 the high end 27 inch will be in stock . dont know if its just wating for 2011 imacs with ML or what is it but im already sold on that there wont be an imac but its just wishful thinking but lets hope it happens. usually my nearest apple store didnt get the updated machines until couple days after the macbook airs and minis came out last year i know this because my gf bought one and she couldnt pick it up right away because they didnt have it in stock right away idk again just wishful thinking

Not pointless . . . we're all thinking it, you said it. After all this time of waiting, I hope after the iMacs are finally released that someone starts a thread that basically says, "Finally! What model/options did YOU get and what are you doing with it?". I think we need closure after all this . . .:)

Yes, we'll definitely need some closure. Mine will be when I finally see a beautiful new iMac sitting on my desk. :D

So I guess you're using a computer from the 80s/90s and still on DialUp? :p

My SSD has saved off over a minute when loading some applications. A few "seconds" here and there all add up. When you're working and trying to get stuff done, the mental block of having to wait for stuff is extremely distracting and can break you out of the flow very easily.

I also grew up during black and white TV's, AMC Gremlins and the Mary Tyler Moore show. In high school, I had a Commodore 64 computer, and loved to play games on it.

I was perfectly content turning it on, sticking "The Bard's Tale" 5.25 inch boot disc in my Commodore 1541 drive, typing
LOAD "*",8,1
RUN
then going to make a sandwich.
After about 3-4 minutes (not exaggerating, for the young out there), the game would be ready. For me to insert the character disc. Wait another 2-3 minutes. Play. Walk around town. Would you like to enter Fanskar's Castle? Yes. Wait another 2-3 minutes.

My time is precious. I can't afford to wait minutes for things that should take seconds. And, in agreement with those in this forum, I can't afford to wait seconds for something that can be and should be near instantaneous.

why is everyone talking about black and white tv, this thread is not a black and white or older devices PLEASE STAY ON TOPIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!;)

I hope they come out soon too! That way the refurbs will drop! :)

I'm going to buy a refurb iMac 2011 to replace my aging 2007 2.2 GHz Macbook Pro. The model I want is currently priced at $1249. When the new ones hit, I hope to see a couple hundred in savings? If not, then I'll just get the $1249 version.

In high school, I had a Commodore 64 computer, and loved to play games on it.

I had a TI99/4A, with a cassette recorder for data. I also had a black & white tv and an 8-track tape player. And like you, I am ready for a faster computer. I just don't have time to wait around for things to load or save. I have a 2007 iMac with a 320GB hard drive and 4MB of RAM. I need more speed and more storage.

1981 was great, but I am living in 2012 and want a 2012 computer. :) But no matter when the new iMac models come out, I am waiting. I don't want to buy a 2011.

more and more of the top imac bto-models are back in stock at the biggest German reseller online shop...:(

Yes Apple must stop with this.I know Cook said they were double down with secrecy, but this is too much.By the way they can do what they want, and i suppose, planned by very long time, maybe last year in the living Jobs Era.
What i mean is that without rumors a lot of Apple's hype is going to end.
So please Mr Cook let us know a little more, some kext about the Gpu,something like its happening still with Ios.

The good old days of my ZX Spectrum 48k,I remember totally sold out at Xmas and I had to wait till February for it...
Games on cassette,10 minutes to install....

But I would swap it all for my nice 2012 iMac....a 48k computer sounds mad now, think our kettle has more K than that...lol

Rumors that we have heard is that supplies are limited and by 30th there will be big supplies coming in. I would say its a 50/50 chance that is new or old iMacs. While my gut feeling is that we will see a new batch of the old outdated hardware. ... Then I'm out of ideas what to do... So what to do?: Keep my days sour waiting and waiting, buy the old which would feel really bad ( would be ok 5 months ago - not now) or buy something else. None of these options are very tempting...to say the least...ideas??

I still think we see them within the next 8 days.

Something I've thought about doing but haven't pulled the trigger:
I'm a Silver Rewards member with Best Buy. So I've got that nice 45-day return policy. I've considered buying a 2011 iMac, and returning on day 44, and then buying an rMBP, and returning on day 44, repeat until 2012 iMacs are out. It's kinda mean to the store and a bit of a hassle for me, but it crossed my mind...

If I custom order an iMac (high model with extra graphics ram) on the Apple Online Store when its released (for education) can I pick it up in store?

idk im already sold on the fact we wont see them till who knows when maybe the next month or after idk... but it could very well be that apple is just not changing part numbers until the day of releasing them. so for example there are 6 apple stores arround me that have zero 27 inch high end imacs and they are expected on the 26th.. the parts number could just show the same as what they are today and then apple just sents a notice the day of saying that those are new imacs idk. Apple might have learned their lesson since Cook said that they were doubling down in secrecy and they are doing things differently than they did before wwdc so we wont see what happened before wwdc this week.. idk i want it to be this week therefore apple will do otherwise. FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUDDDGGEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was browsing around on the OS X Mountain Lion page when something caught my eye:

http://www.apple.com/osx/specs/

At the Feature-Specific Requirements - AirPlay Mirroring tab it says iMac (Mid 2011 or newer). It says the same for the Mac Mini.
It would not make sense to have that on the website until october I guess.

I guess I am just doing what most of us are doing, trying to find evidence for an imminent update...
