I'd just buy a 2011 iMac and be over with it if there is nothing released with Mountain Lion. Why wait for around for a modest update if you really need a new machine. I upgraded to the 2011 for the 27" display and TB and that isn't going to change. USB 3 will be a unimportant update once Intel starts pushing Thunderbolt on the PC side and it becomes the new affordable standard.

There is always the chance that there won't be a 2012 iMac released like the Mac Pro.

I agree. I'm waiting until ML comes out hopefully next week and I'm buying a new iMac for sure. Whichever model is on sale, I'll take it. I hope they do a spec bump but if not I'm done waiting.

I'm starting to think that a bad idea. It's obvious Apple is going "high rez" It's just a matter of time on the imac. Developers already starting to make "retina apps" you can see where this is headed. Just like the PPC mac, not any time soon mind you, but if you buy a new IMAC even on Wednesday with Ivy bridge, usb3..etc.... but no retina? your buying brand new tech that is already obsolete. Project 2-3 years ahead everything will be high rez, everything. You can totally see that we are at a cusp of a new tech run. Think about it, if your icons alone are 1024x1024 what kind of things can you do just to that icon. I'm not even talking about app it's self, no just the icon. I'm talking crazy amount of inlays..switches...etc. We are talking about 3d with no glasses. Floating displays. Imagine clicking on a icon, what looks like fire explodes to the ceiling and all your photos drop down surrounding yourself 360 style. The possibility are endless. Remember, it's the GPU now, not the CPU where we have our limits.

Also it's pretty obvious what the ITV is all about. It's all about 3840x2160. Another thing is painfully clear MANUFACTURING CAPACITY

Sorry but we are talking about an iMac update that could happen very soon, not 3-5 years in the future.

Yes,i hope to see the specs bump happen in the coming (24-25)week,not next fall,or even beyond.
Please Apple stop this, its not hard like going to the moon, its just an update and money are yours^^.
By the way we will know soon if next Fall or this Summer but if its not Summer i'll go with a 2012 Classic MbPro.

Sounds like a perfect time to buy. In 3 years when I need to replace 2012 model, all of the kinks will be worked out of the high rez tech runup you describe. HDD will be big, graphics processors powerful enough to drive the high rez, prices will have come down, etc.

Well I hate to say it because I really wanted to make the switch. If I haven't heard a concrete schedule about the iMac, I have my parts list ready on NewEgg and will pull the trigger on the 29th.

Not trying to be a downer, but based on previous apple updates we will see an updated imac in october. In 2011 feb apple release mbp thunderbolt, 3 months later the imac thunderbolt.

The mbp retina , mbp and mb air was already release on wwdc, i'm not sure apple would release a new hardware update in 1 months after that. Imo either they update the imacs on wwdc or wait 3-4 months to update the entire mac line to keep up with the first updated hardware.

Example:

Feb 2011 mbp (laptop line)
May 2011 imac (desktop line)
July 2011 mac mini (desktop line, apple want to push for thunderbolt)
Oct 2011 silent mbp update

I've bought 27 3.1 imac once i saw the announcement at wwdc, so dont keep your hopes up for july release.

Play new games in 2014 at native resolution and high settings

Never played a computer game in my life, wouldn't know where to start and at my time of life I shan't be starting now.

Transfer data to/from my USB3 terabyte external without it being an overnight process.

Matters little to me whether it takes all night or not as I'm usually asleep. :D

Boot up and launch apps from an SSD without donating multiple appendanges to Apple's shareholders

SSD or HD matters little to me, what's in a few seconds.

And, if the rumors are true, cut the frequency of my glare headaches by 75%

I don't have any more or any less headaches using a matte screen than I do with my shiny iMac screen.

So all things being equal, I should, bar hardware failures, be fine and dandy with my 2011 iMac for a good few years yet?

SSD is a lot more than a few seconds. Quick boot. Instant app launches, something you will miss.

For someone who grew up with black and white t.v. a few seconds here and there hardly matters to our generation. Besides I always use "mac sleep" so the startup is more or less instant anyway. I read War and Peace the other month so I'm sure you get my drift?

Exactly. SSD is the single biggest performance improvement to come around in a looong time. It's a dramatic improvement over HDD. A must have, imo.

Wow, Lankyman, you are from a truly noble generation. I wish the current generation would have more of your perspective on things.

I mean, NOT... what a pompous ass.

If you don't play games and couldn't care less when programs start or finish... Can I interest you in my 2007 iMac? $1700 seems fair if you're willing to pay original retail for outdated technology.

After reading all the hype, my new iMac will definitely have a SSD. I'm particularly impatient when it comes to program launch times, so it's the only way to go. I want a 512gb option. :)

I just stopped by the apple store and he said now imac or minis have been announced.

I meant nothing new announced. I asked if new minis or imac were coming out when I went to the apple store. Maybe october I said if not right now. He said not even then. Nothing new coming out this year. No new refreshes.

Again, I am reminded of other posts about visits to the Apple Store where employees have said that they get told nothing about new product releases until they arrive anyway.

i have friend that works at retail at the store he says no one knows really they just kinda show up none of the retail people know hes waiting for the new imac as well and no news for him or anyone else in the store he said maybe the managers might know something but he even doubts that they do indeed know so anytime a retail apple employee tells anything unless is that same day that the products come out, dont believe a word.

This guy has no idea when it's coming out. If all you had to do was ask an Apple store employee when something new was coming out, rumor sites like this wouldn't and couldn't exist.
