Seriously, I don't get it. Jobs kills the live feed because he is so pissed over some rumor sites? Great idea, Steve - guess who will provide the text transscripts all the Mac faithful will be reading (hint: not Apple)?

If it is part of a strategy to downplay the big conventions in favor of smaller Apple events, he might as well stop giving keynotes.

And why bandwith should be more expensive now than it was e.g. 2001 when he introduced the Tibook is beyond me. If anything, it's the other way around.

It might just be macintouch BSing us, bigtime.

Blah. Macintouch is the only Mac-fanpage that ever got an apology from Jobs and an official sneak-peak to an unreleased product. This was in 1997 after J called them a rumor site and later called tell them about the then-supersecret iMac.

They are not MacOSRumors or MacRumors or the like.

Over on Slashdot, they're saying that the reason Apple's not webcasting the keynote is because Apple will NOT introduce a cheap headless Mac. Makes some sense -- wouldn't want your 100,000 most loyal fans to be simultaneously disappointed at once.

Just a theory.

What is interesting, is the fact that my boss is going to a European Apple Event in Paris coming Tuesday evening with a live satellite connection for viewing the MacWorld SF Keynote speech.
The same thing was done with the WWDC 2003 (intro of the G5).... which also wan't webcatsed live even though the specs of the G5 were leaked aswell. Ofcourse, we all knew then that the leaked spces were real.....

Shame if this is true. Not only because I wanted to watch it, but it's a bit of good PR, having so many thousand (was it 50,000 last year?) people tuning in to watch the Keynote online. I seem to recall a few reviews in newspapers last year writing about Apple praised their streaming of the Keynote, saying it made them seem accessible and more 'in touch' with their customers.

Anyway, we'll see. The address for the last two years has been http://stream.apple.akadns.net/ so let's see if it updates from the iPod special event before Tuesday's keynote.

4. Fear of mishap. This has also been brought up already. They don't want to risk an embarrassing situation if something goes wrong. Tiger demo? iWork demo? Any other product?

Well, I'm surprised I haven't seen anyone mention this yet. But I think reason number four above is the closest to being the reason, but misses the mark slightly. I think they are genuinely worried about a potential protest during the middle of the presentation.

If anyone listens to the Engadet Podcast, a few weeks ago, Philip mentioned that there were a contingent of people who were planning to stand up at a pre determined time in the presentation and yell "Stop suing us!" This was back when apple had only supeanaed(sp?) the rumor sites to find the source of the leak. I would think people are taking the idea much more seriously now that Apple has directly named ThinkSecret in a lawsuit.

Doing this may not stop the protesters, but it will keep them from broadcasting the fiasco live. Sure, there will be reporters there to record the event, but when Apple posts the Quicktime of the Keynote to the site, and such disruptions can be conveniently edited out.

it's ok for you guys in the US, just go to sleep at 5am by the time you wake up it'll be 1pm or something and the stream will probably be online.

it's harder for us in the uk though - the keynote will start at 5pm, which means i'll have to resist visiting mr or apple.com for 6 hours :(

a friend of mine who works at the apple store in london is going to try and find out if the keynote's showing in the store - i hope so!

How do you figure? I'm on CST and the keynote will be on at 11 AM here - almost perfect to watch over lunch break. What the heck are you talking about having to stay up until 5 AM, sleep until 1 PM, etc.? I think the majority of people, especially those of us who work, are going to be doing their usual routine that day, and try and catch the keynote over lunch, or shortly after - no need to do anything different than any other day... And who stays up until 5 AM anyway and sleeps until 1 PM, unless you're on shift work?

And why is it harder for the UK? The majority of people will home from work at the end of the day and the keynote is there, easy, piece of cake - watch it while you're having some dinner. What's the big deal?

I think you're making this far more complicated than it is...

lol, i'm just saying that in the us it's shown early, so it's easier to skip the temptation of going to apple.com, because you'll probably be working or sleeping - but for me, i'll be pacing around at home (at 5pm) waiting for the stream to come online :/

stevenotes just arent the same when you know what's coming up!

oh, btw, when i said harder for us in the uk, i simply meant it's more frustrating, because access to the latest products is just a click away :(

sorry if i made it sound more complex than it is, i'm incredibly bored ;)

What about the Stock Market showing today's activity tomorrow. Not like anyone owes us football or profit and loss reports.
Actually, people who get stock market reports for free see results that are at least 15 minutes delayed. You have to pay for live results.

Who would want to see the SteveNote on pay-per-view? I would.

Thas mucked up

Thas mucked up for real this aint right. I own three g5s and two 17 inch power books every-time apple releases a good Computer i dish out for it and replace all my systems with the new ones and they go and do this fowl ish. Man come on what if when they release a new CPU or product we say we will wait until next year to purchase it after it came out lets see how there quarterly earnings look like then, and watch there stock plummet. i say it again thas mucked up.

i feel for ya man...... feel free to send me a G5 and a PB when you dump all of Apples stuff over this mess. thanks...

lol - this is funny. people are acting like...

1. stevo is personally p-o'd at them and the rumor sites, and this is retaliation.

yeah, right. apple is a business, not a kindergarten class.

2. you've earned the right to watch the keynote live

right. your life is going to be that much worse reading it live and seeing it an hour later. if it was that important to you, you could *buy a ticket* to actually see it live.

and keep in mind the post back on page 2 or 3 where the apple store manager said that they were going to broadcast it. this is after all a rumor.

3. was there a 3? i don't remember.

but people are acting like a bunch of kids over this. there is more to life than a steve-note...

Well.....That Stinks!!!

I really don't like that they are doing this. It really stinks. I always look forward to vewing the keynote in realtime. Oh well, is there anyone here that is going and are planning on posting realtime updates to a site or planning on streaming. If you are and don't mind letting us know that would be great.

Thanks,

I don't think it's a big deal that we want to see. There are probably people reading and posting to this thread that have shelled out substaintial sums of money to Apple in the past year, this includes me, and feel as if they deserve to be able to see it. Some people are college students that may not have classes during the keynote but have classes during the rest of the time it would take them to travel to the conf. and back. I think it is fair to voice an opinion that states something to the effect of being disappointed that Apple is not streaming it live and I don't think that I see it as "acting like a bunch of kids" but you are entitled to you opinion and I apologize if any of my comments have made you percieve it that way.

People seem to be forgetting that throughout 2004 Apple has stopped broadcasting Keynotes live. The last live Keynote I can remember is last years MWSF, after that no more Webcasts. I spose Apple just thinks live webcasts mean less value for money for the people who actually pay and turn up. After all if you can watch the keynote for free on the net why bother getting a ticket?

I'm disappointed, I'll admit, but come on it's a few hours, it's hardly the end of the world.

Because of the $499 Mac rumors, the viewing audience for the live Internet broadcast would probably be much larger than usual - maybe too large for reliable delivery of the video stream. It may be a simple bandwidth issue.

That makes the most sense to me. Somehow this being a "punishment" seems a bit too farcical and childish to be true.

But...but...if they don't broadcast the keynote, what am I going to do at work that day?

hahaha, you got me there, i wasn't thinking on that till now.

God, there must be something we can do to make apple please us, otherwise, as you , i have nothing to do at work that day .

I really don't think so. How people can possibility come up with this conclusion is just astounding.
