Must be problems with the animatronic Steve stunt-bot. It just doesn't have the RDF strength of now-retired clone #3.

*shrugs* Since I’ve started to actually watch Apple’s events I’ve found the size of the feed annoyingly small. What? 300 x 100 or something? Its not that big of a deal for me. I’ve love to watch it but give me a windows that would at least fill up the screen on my PDA.
The local Apple Store near me has typically used the satelite linkup (instead of the webcast). The show there has typically been top-notch picture quality on a wall-size screen.

I would hope a company like Apple could at least afford an intern to do this?

Something about having actual bums in the control room would make me nervous :)

well not live anyway....

oh well, I am not 'that' news hungry, I can wait until after the keynote to see what is new, and watch good ol Steve then. BTW, I expect MacRumors to give us the live updates again,as they did previously, don't you guys?

I was looking forward to watching itas I always do in Apple Soho with 300 other iHeads - this blows.
Bingo! And I'm surprised nobody else has mentioned it.

These keynotes are often social events. The local Apple Stores get packed with Mac users that were unable to travel to California for the conference. For many, it's as much of a social event as it is a press release.

Not Broadcasting to Mall of America

At first I didn't believe this rumor, why I asked myself would they not webcast, or at least not satelite feed to one of my local stores, but lo and behold...I just called the Mall of America store which I have travelled to on several occasions to watch keynotes, and they indeed are not going to be broadcasting. Another of the local stores here in the Twin Cities thought it was because of technical reasons, but neither store knew much more than that. Bummer. :(

That was what the CambridgeSide Galleria did last year. Hopefully the news will be positive on Monday.

I think Apple is just finally realizing that they don't need negative publicity. They're simply covering their behinds in case something like this would occur...

I posted it before, but I'll post it again. Apple said that they wanted to get away from big product announcements at the Expos. Look at the latest iPod release. That was a Special Apple Event.

I think this does 3 things:
1) It gives Apple the flexibility to release something when it is ready for release. (I didn't say immediately available in full supply ;) )
2) It keeps people guessing when the next thing will be released, and not adjusting their purchasing based on the Expos.
3) Consequently/Ironically, this practice also fuels the rumor mills that Apple is currently "miffed" at. (That doesn't excuse violation of an NDA or enticing someone to do so, IMO)

Isn't it obvious?

Steve Jobs is a show man. He loves to show off Apple's latest and greatest.. The problem with no live coverage is this.. Steve is worried the show will bomb because everyone in the audience will realize about before or by the end of the keynote that everything he brought to Steve their socks off was already known to them thanks to Think Secret... And he doesn't want disinterested long faces showing up on live coverage of his event.. If he can't blow them out of the water with something new and wonderous, then he'd rather not have the coverage appear until after Apple technicians can edit out crowd disappointment shots at the end of the show..

We all know how a Stevenote is supposed to end.. everyone happy, light bubbly atmosphere, all kinds of new products to think about and ponder.. But this time, everyone already knows the full line-up. Every person in that auditorium will have paid how much(?) simply to hear confirmation of every new product they already know.. and nothing new to pull out of the bag.. No surprise "and one more thing.." ... What a let-down.. Don't you think? That is precisely why Steve won't allow the keynote to be live.. He's worried it will be a drag thanks to Think Secret and company.

"Stop suing us!" "Stop suing us!" "Stop suing us!" "Stop suing us!"

If anyone listens to the Engadet Podcast, a few weeks ago, Philip mentioned that there were a contingent of people who were planning to stand up at a pre determined time in the presentation and yell "Stop suing us!" This was back when apple had only supeanaed(sp?) the rumor sites to find the source of the leak. I would think people are taking the idea much more seriously now that Apple has directly named ThinkSecret in a lawsuit.

What a concept - the Stevenote becomes a focus for civil disobedience!

I don't think it's a big deal that we want to see. There are probably people reading and posting to this thread that have shelled out substaintial sums of money to Apple in the past year, this includes me, and feel as if they deserve to be able to see it. Some people are college students that may not have classes during the keynote but have classes during the rest of the time it would take them to travel to the conf. and back. I think it is fair to voice an opinion that states something to the effect of being disappointed that Apple is not streaming it live and I don't think that I see it as "acting like a bunch of kids" but you are entitled to you opinion and I apologize if any of my comments have made you percieve it that way.

Kornyboy

oh no, not at all. i want to see it too. and I empathize with those who took off work, or were really just looking forward to seeing it. but people posting things like 'grow up steve', that this is 'irrational punishment from the one and only steve', It is just Steve seek retribution, at our expense', that apple is 'sucking the life blood out of their followers', is just plain silly. and the one that said f* you nick ciarelli was just way out.

well, to those of you who are reasonably well grounded, i do hope you enjoy the keynote (even if it's only in text form). the rest of you will be disappointed no matter what is introduced, so have fun with that too...

People seem to be forgetting that throughout 2004 Apple has stopped broadcasting Keynotes live. The last live Keynote I can remember is last years MWSF, after that no more Webcasts. I spose Apple just thinks live webcasts mean less value for money for the people who actually pay and turn up. After all if you can watch the keynote for free on the net why bother getting a ticket?

I'm disappointed, I'll admit, but come on it's a few hours, it's hardly the end of the world.

No, its not the end of the world. MWSF 2004 was the one that I saw live via satellite at an Apple Store. There was about 20 of us. They even sat up chairs for us. The technology is there why not put it to good use. Steve has abandoned the North East when it comes to MW, at least he could allow this. There is just nothing that can beat the enthusiasm and excitement when it's live. The rebroadcasts later are just not the same. The news is already known.

Yeah, I totally agree. I'm in central mass. But, don't act like we're not going to see it in all it's glory. We will. It will just be a day or so later. True we won't get all the excitement of the live event and not knowing anything. I can't see why Apple wouldn't take advantage of the enormous hype it would bring. But, I'm thankful at least we will be able to see it at all. Apple really should broadcast it live though. I just don't see the logic. We should all make a petition or something.

This sucks.

So much for my always-connected, always-in-the-know, digital lifestyle :(

Thanks Steve.

Will they allow people to bring in their laptops or do people have to take notes with pencil and paper? Might as well take us all the way back to 1984.

You're talking like the keynote isn't going to happen, or that it isn't going to be available to view later. How does taking away the 'live' element of the keynote change anything that you just said?

The live audience will still be there. They won't react any differently if the event is being broadcast live or not. I seriously doubt this is an attempt to edit the broadcast piece to hide disappointments.

Another problem with your assertation is that these products will somehow be less exciting because people know about them already. Thats just ridiculous. Steve has a real flair for showing these things off and making them sound like messiah in a box.

I'm not surprised, there are reports that there might be some sort of protest concerning the suing of their customers at the keynote.

Even though I am skeptical as to that reasoning, its the most logical explanation for this turn of events that I have heard thus far.

It may very well be that TS responded to Apple with something like 'see you at the keynote. We'll be the ones with the big signs in the front row'

QuickTime 7?

No live broadcast but after the Keynote you can download QT7 and view it in a QT7 only stream!?

Makes sense. It would certainly cause a huge installment/upgrade base instantly.

You all are embarrassing...

Do you realize how many people consider us Apple users zealots...
seriously, this is not the end of the world...
I used to try to watch the live feed, but too many people made it stutter so bad, I just wait until it's posted later. Just think of how much better it looks. Just think how much better quicktime looks. Maybe once Tiger is in all our little grubby hands with it's new quicktime, maybe then live keynotes will be something to watch...
But really,
"You're so vain, I bet you think this song is about you... Don't you..."

For those who use the keynote as a social event...
get together anyway, Drink up, play with each other's equipment, watch the text feeds, make jokes, then watch the posted quicktime file together, without the ghosted jittery color livecast of days gone by...
"I can't believe they did this to me!!!"--- please

I wonder if Apple is previewing something especially prone to crashing; can't have a KP on live broadcast, like poor Bill's blue screen at CES...
