It will most likely be similar to the 3g --> 3gs...

People fail to appreciate just how much of an improvement the 3GS was over the 3G. Sure they looked the same, but the technology jump was far greater than the 2G -> 3G upgrade.
I'd go so far as to say the improvements from the 3G to the 3GS were more significant than the 3GS to the 4 upgrade.

19 months after release, a 3GS still runs all current apps and the current iOS very well. At this same point in its lifecycle, the 3G was really struggling to perform.

We would be lucky to have such an upgrade with the iPhone 5 (or iPhone 4s) this summer ;)

Of course apple is coming out with an iPhone 5 this June. With the increased competition they have to update the phone to keep up.

Agreed. With the pace that Android phone are coming out, Apple can't let the iPhone 4 go on for another year.

I hate the fact that every thread I read mentions something about an Iphone 5 coming out in June. IF Apple does anything in June, it will NOT be a brand new completely redesigned Iphone 5. It will be an Iphone 4s, 4hd, whatever. It will be the same exact exterior with at the most a white or multiple color option. It may have a few small tweaks but it's not going to be anything crazy. It will most likely be similar to the 3g --> 3gs. The 1st quarter release of the current iphone 4 on verizon just further proves my point. Apple wouldn't do that to a brand new carrier they just signed up with. Do you guys really think that NO ONE at Verizon mentioned this to apple at any meetings? I'll be shocked if anything besides color options changes for this June.

Buddy this is a numbers game. They want to sell phones.. People on both sides so it makes complete sense to release a phone now and another in the summer. People have a choice and they know that Apple does a yearly refresh on all their products. Just like the white iPhone 4 will come out and people will buy that one. If you are concerned with getting the latest and greatest then you need to have your pockets together...

That's because, as I've said above, the internal hardware of the 3GS are essentially the same as the internal hardware of the iPhone 4. The only real difference is the doubling of the RAM in the 4. Otherwise, the CPU is clocked slightly higher, and the GPU is identical. That's why the 3GS still performs very close to the iPhone 4. If we get the rumored dual core Cortex A9 (Apple calls it their A5) and the rumored GPU, it will be as significant of a jump as the 3G to 3GS.

Actually, I think the discussion went something more like this:

Steve: Yeah iPhone on Verizon? Sure, we can do that, in June when the next model comes out.

Ivan: NO! We need it NOW! NOW NOW NOW!

Steve: Uhhh well, I guess we could kludge together a limited-network CDMA-only variant of the 4 to tide you over for a few months....

Ivan: WORKS FOR ME! :D

I think that Verizon is fully aware of the product cycle, but both sides wanted to move forward quickly, and this was the only way to do it. Clearly there are enough people who don't care what's coming out in June. They want their iPhone, and they want Verizon, and they don't care (right now, anyway) that a new phone might be coming out in a few months.

I work for a company that does a lot of work for Apple, not sure if anyone will believe me as there seems to be a lot of WUM's on here... But I'll tell you anyway.

I've been informed that there will be no hardware updates to the iPhone this year and the iPhone 5 will launch in the summer of 2012.

Apple want to do a universal launch for the next iPhone and due to the release of the Verizon iPhone, and they think the iPhone 4 is a strong product, they will wait until 2012.

The white iPhone 4 will come out this summer.

For some reason, I believe the OP. It's a typical Apple thing to do. They'll announce the white iphone 4, and instead make a big deal about the newest iteration of iOS to smokescreen the fact there is no iPhone 5. They will make a big deal over the magical new notifications in iOS, and spend the majority of the talk lauding their record profits.

Oh, and one more thing. Cook will announce the improved facetime, and he will do so over 3G between an AT&T and Verizon white iPhones with Steve Jobs who wishes he could be there in person to make this revolutionary and landmark announcement.

right, I'm sure no one will notice that.

But it doesn't make financial sense. As many posters have pointed out, there are millions of rabid fanboys and girls ready to buy this new phone (many of whom bought the iphone 4).

To say no to hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue is patent insanity.

I agree. Selling the iPhone4 in January, that is brand new to Verizon, is an easy way to make big buck$ for both Apple and Verizon. So many non tech geeks out there have no idea about the upcoming iPhone5 or 4GS whatever it will be called, this June. If they can sell a few million now before June, why not take those sales right now, instead of not having those sales at all, and just waiting until June.

Would love to know the % of iPhone buyers that are geeks like us, reading tech sites, and know everything coming out, compared to the % of iPhone buyers that have no clue, they just want a new iPhone, regardless if the iPhone5 was coming next month, because they wouldn't even know that.

Woz came to me in a dream as a bearded, bespectacled centaur. He had a shiny white polycarbonate bow and a quiver full of CNC-milled aluminum arrows. I was knee-deep fly-fishing for meatballs in a river of pomodoro sauce when I heard him approach.

He spoke with a bellow that was both geeky and frightening. "YOU THERE, STANDING IN THE RIVER. DO YOU KNOW OF THE IPHONE?"

"Of course, I've owned one of each," I said.

"WELL THERE WILL BE A NEW ONE THIS SUMMER, AS WITH ALL SUMMERS BEFORE. GO FORTH AND SHARE THE WORD WITH THE BELIEVERS."

"Thanks, Mr. Woz," I said, "I'll do that." And then I hooked a nice 5-lb ground veal meatball.

So, I don't think this was a random premonition. Can we put this on page 1 please?

That's the freaking best!!!

:D:apple::D:apple::D:apple::D:apple::D

That is why there will be a WHITE one. ;)

Yeah, people here seem to forget that Apple is a publicly traded company that has investors to answer to. Even a company as well off as them can't afford to just pass up millions of dollars in revenue to...what, make Verizon feel better about not getting a 5 this year? Give me a break...

no matter what the update to the phone ends up being, it will be the 5th release of the iPhone (aside from adding CDMA for the verizon iPhone), so even if you feel it isn't worthy of the name iPhone 5, or that it won't be called the iPhone 5 (I agree), it is still technically the iPhone 5.

Since we have no other knowledge of what apple will name it, the most correct name to call it is iPhone 5, because no matter what happens, it is technically right

For proof look no further then Moto Atrix which handily beats iPhone 4 in just about evey category.

Everybody says this, but I seriously doubt if it is better. And I am an android user. The moto phones are locked down and hard to root. The added UI is total garbage. Updates are slow. I also don't understand why everybody oohs and aahs at the laptop dock for the Atrix, when Palm tried that with the Folio ("Foolio") everybody howled in laughter.

Maybe HTC will come up with an iphone topper but I really doubt if the Atrix (when it ships) is going to be the One.

I would be equally shocked if your prediction holds true and they don't release a 4G model this year. There's a lot of them out there, and more to come this year, and if Apple misses the boat on that they will be in trouble because it's so much faster.

Apple will not defeat Android when it comes to an arms race. Apple's next chip won't beat TEGRA 2 this year. Not happening. What Apple is brewing is a much bigger jump in software next year. Why is the 600MHz iPhone 3GS still smoother than Android phones at 1GHz? Apple got it right for both software and hardware. I think Apple got blindsided by some of its competitors this year after CES thinking they can still dictate the market at their own pace. Add Steve Jobs health problems. Look how different Google's Honeycomb now. With only a few months from release of a Verizon iPhone 4, Apple simply won't have time to completely revamp iOS that can be utilized for multi-core.

Yes, there will be a new iPhone this summer. But not a big of jump as you would expect. Apple is still making money hand over fist with their current model just by expanding networks and reducing prices. This summer's newer release will be for those whiners who just want the latest and greatest only to realize a few months later that is it still just a minor weak here and there and wasn't a bigger upgrade from the 4 to begin with. So fickle. Gee, a 2 sec difference from opening up a new website. An 8MP camera where the photos will take in more space. Doubling the GB memory for the packrats when cloud storage is the future. An extra 1 hour of battery life this time. Big whoop!

I find it funny how people complain when Apple updates their iPods and iPhones after they get an older model just recently. If there is a threat that they don't get another shinier toy this year, they complain about that too. The next truly worthy update of the iPhone has nothing to do with how much more hardware Apple puts in it and everything to do with how much iOS has changed while still maintaining battery life.

READ ABOUT THE LG OPTIMUS 2X (TEGRA 2 powered phone)

http://www.gsmarena.com/lg_optimus_2x-review-561p2.php

Having seen all these numbers, you probably expect to hear that the LG Optimus 2X is much faster than the current crop of Android smartphones in each and every task, but we are afraid we will have to disappoint you here.

In real life the Optimus 2X feels buttery smooth but it doesn’t feel much different than the Samsung Galaxy S, for instance.
The Samsung flagship is pretty smooth already and there is not much room for improvement in terms of pure UI responsiveness.

It’s resource-heavy games where the differences should become prominent, but at this point there aren’t too many of those around the Android market. And those that do exist run well enough on the current single-core 1GHz CPU’s so you won’t be able to tell the difference – not with only one core enabled anyway.

We guess the first titles that would really make the difference prominent are the ones that make use of the Tegra 2 advanced GPU. Nvidia already announced that we’ll see Android games using the Unreal 3 engine (Dungeon Defenders) and perhaps even the iDTech 5 engine (Doom 4 and Rage) and the Frostbite engine (Battlefield: Bad Company).

It will take some time to see the software make use of the hardware, but once it’s done, the Tegra 2 will be the go-to Android platform for gaming. So there’s no question that the Optimus 2X is way better future proofed than its single-core contemporaries.

Verizon 4G LTE?

My thought as I was pricing out the Family Shared plan at Verizon today was that perhaps they are rolling out the phones this week on the 3G network in an effort to commit people to that network for 2 years. Perhaps in the summer or even 1st quarter 2012, iPhone 5 rolls out with the 4G LTE capability and spreads out the impact on their system. Anyone who would be willing to upgrade to the 5 would have to pay a lot to do so, otherwise stay where they are at. This would ensure for the most part that the 4G network does not get overloaded too quickly and thus suffer the same fate as AT&T's early years. It would not be unlike Apple to come out with a new model shortly after they hype a previous one... I still have an iPhone 3G on AT&T with no more commitment and my wife has an OLD razor on Verizon. Looking to combine plans but want to get iPhones and would love to have a 5 if it comes out within a year. What to do???

That's all good and well, but all rumors are pointing to a multi-core cortex A9 and multi-core SGX 543. Apple is the unique position of directly determining the software that runs on their hardware. They can immediately write software to take advantage of the architecture. Moreover, they can press their advantage with the app store by having the best looking apps and games out there. It's not just about selling units. It's about mind share, market share and selling apps. Selling more phones ensures that all of those shares stay with apple. Without a physical and/or internal redesign, customers have no reason to return for their yearly purchase of a new iPhone.

Sounds like someone trying to justify their recent iPhone 4 purchase

rubbish.

so by that logic the iPhone 3G was actually the iPhone 2, oh wow you learn something new everyday.

Absolutely. The iPhone 3G WAS the iPhone 2.How do you think we got to #4 currently?

iPhone 1) Original iPhone
iPhone 2) iPhone 3G
iPhone 3) iPhone 3GS
iPhone 4) Correctly labeled as iPhone 4
iPhone 5) Probably called iPhone 4GS
