Apple's quote was Were not stupid. How the reporter inferred that this is some sort of confirmation on a new model for Verizon this summer is beyond me.

Come on guys, there will be a new iPhone this year.
There are many of us who upgrade our iPhones every year. Apple as a public company only cares about one thing. The money.
How to tell if there will be a new iPhone at any year:

There is NO IPHONE 5 coming out this year!!! Stop saying it!!!
I hate the fact that every thread I read mentions something about an Iphone 5 coming out in June. IF Apple does anything in June, it will NOT be a brand new completely redesigned Iphone 5. It will be an Iphone 4s, 4hd, whatever. It will be the same exact exterior with at the most a white or multiple color option. It may have a few small tweaks but it's not going to be anything crazy. It will most likely be similar to the 3g --> 3gs. The 1st quarter release of the current iphone 4 on verizon just further proves my point. Apple wouldn't do that to a brand new carrier they just signed up with. Do you guys really think that NO ONE at Verizon mentioned this to apple at any meetings? I'll be shocked if anything besides color options changes for this June.

The 3g -> 3gs was not a small change. The processor and RAM increase was a huge performance upgrade.
No one is expecting them to change the housing or screen. We're expecting a new SoC primarily. Perhaps other things like NFC, HSPA+ may happen.

Im sorry but youre wrong and this thread is dumb. Its still the 5th generation of the iPhone...hence the iPhone 5. Many people think the 3GS was named that just to get it back on par with the correct numbers. It doesnt need to be a complete redesign to be called the 5. Who knows though, you certainly dont.
I think the argument is what Apple will call it. Of course, there will not be a redesigned phone this year. Apple will not through out all that R&D and factory expense for a one year cycle.

You have no more proof that the iPhone 5 is not coming out than those that say it is coming out. Yeah, you're right. Apple wouldnt screw its customers. Especially the early adopters.

The reason people refer to the next version of the iPhone as the iPhone 5, is because this will be the 5th iPhone that Apple releases (the Verizon iPhone is exactly the same as the AT&T iPhone, but with a different antenna). So its natural to assume the iPhone 5, since the fourth iPhone that Apple released was called.... wait for it... iPhone 4, and the third iPhone was... can you guess, iPhone 3GS (3, 4, 5). Some people have already begun to refer to the next iPhone in 2012, iPhone 6.

The original iPhone design only lasted a year before the completely redesigned 3G so anything is possible.
U mad? It's okay, your iPhone 4 will still be cool when everyone else has the latest and greatest iPhone 5.
Truth: nobody, including you, knows what will come this June.
But the most accurate way of referring to it, until Apple says differently, is as the iPhone 5; the fifth generation iphone.

Oh i'm sure Verizon brought this up and is FULLY on board to get the iPhone 5 in June. If Verizon is going to compete with ATT they need the iPhione 5 too. That way they can sell the iPhone 4 at $99 and the iPhone 5 at $199 and $299. Even more reason they will get a new phone along with THE REST OF THE WORLD!
