I disagree. That thread is about there not being a new iPhone this summer.

THIS thread is about a new iPhone maybe coming this summer but, despite being the 5th iPhone, it not being called the iPhone 5.

Or something.

At any rate, they seem like different threads to me.

You're right, there is no Iphone 5 coming out this summer. It is likely that an iPhone 5 will come out this summer.

Bookmarked. :D

Can't wait to see the OP's face when Apple announce the iPhone 5 later this year, someone better go to his house and set up a few cameras.

It will most likely be similar to the 3g --> 3gs. The 1st quarter release of the current iphone 4 on verizon just further proves my point. Apple wouldn't do that to a brand new carrier they just signed up with. Do you guys really think that NO ONE at Verizon mentioned this to apple at any meetings? I'll be shocked if anything besides color options changes for this June.

First of all, the next phone, regardless of what it looks like, is the iPhone 5 because....wait for it....wait for it... Its the fifth iPhone.

The 3G --> 3GS was a massive upgrade compared to the 2G --> 3G; so if that's what we get in the iPhone 5, bring it on. Verizon is counting on a new one this summer. This way they get iPhone 4 sales now, and then all those new customers who want the iPhone 5 will buy again in a couple of months because they can sell their 4s for as much as or a little less than the 5's cost. Its Win-Win for Verizon.

Besides the rest of the world doesn't care that Apple added a new US carrier.

PS. Enjoy your VZW iPhone that will be old-hat in five months.

PPS. Ooooo 5 months, 5th iPhone, iPhone 5.... Apple's getting all Lost™ on us.

OP, I'll make you a deal. If there is a new iPhone released this summer, you never post here again. If there isn't, I will never post here again. ;)

I agree with the OP. Apple has always staggered the technology in their devices. It seemed like with the iPods they came out with something new, the next year they updated it, and the year after that they came out with something completely new.

Although, I'd like to be optimistic because I cannot go another year with this phone unless they make some BIG changes.

I hate the fact that every thread I read mentions something about an Iphone 5 coming out in June. IF Apple does anything in June, it will NOT be a brand new completely redesigned Iphone 5. It will be an Iphone 4s, 4hd, whatever. It will be the same exact exterior with at the most a white or multiple color option. It may have a few small tweaks but it's not going to be anything crazy. It will most likely be similar to the 3g --> 3gs. The 1st quarter release of the current iphone 4 on verizon just further proves my point. Getting this upset about something is a tell-tale sign that you spend WAY too much time on MacRumors. I think someone needs a timeout!

Also, can you forward the link that confirms no iPhone 5? Thanks!

A few things

1) There is a 100% chance of a new iPhone version being released this June. History, plus simple business, dictates this fact. This alone would be enough, but there is also evidence.
-Inside sources have confirmed a redesigned iPhone currently being tested
-The latest software, 4.3, has references to iPhone 4,1. The original iPhone was 1,1. The 3G, an incremental upgrade to the original, was 1,2. The 3GS, a HUGE upgrade to the 3G (completely different internals, same chip iPhone 4 is based off of, barely similar to 3G contrary to OPs belief). The iPhone 4 is 3,1. And now we have references to 4,1. As it is a complete whole number higher, it is a major upgrade, most likely completely new hardware.

2) As mentioned above, the 3GS was a major, major upgrade. The 3G and 3GS are completely different phones.

Wow these threads are getting old.

There is no way, no how, that Apple is going to make the world wait two years for a new phone. Hell there seems like a new Android phone is coming out every week. There has to be a new iPhone coming out this summer. Since 5 comes after 4 then the new phone will be the ....surprise...

iPhone 5

:D

Very few people seem to understand how big of a jump the 3GS was from the 3G. All they see is "it looked the same, so it must not have been a big update". They fail to see that 3GS actually has basically the same internals as the current iPhone 4, which means even though the 3GS to 4 changed dramatically externally, the "guts" are almost identical (that's why there's not much difference in speed between the 3GS and 4). Apple could add internals that are 4 times as powerful as the current iPhone 4 for the next generation, but if they kept the same (or very similar) external design, clueless people will say "the 5/4G/4GS/whatever they call the next gen is a minor update from the iPhone 4". All they know is what they "see" on the outside, even if the internals are twice as fast/powerful (like the 3G to 3GS was)

iPhone 5 is what people are just calling the next generation of the iPhone.
its not like we actually mean Apple is going to call it the "iPhone 5", it just means that there'll be a 2011 iPhone.

Exactly. Not only was it at least 2x as fast, its actually a completely different chip. Clueless people are clueless.

There has already been rumors of a new iPhone coming again in the Summer. It might not be night and day different than the current phone, but the typical 12 month upgrade cycle in technology. That one rumor that seems to be pretty strong at this point, is the purchase of the new A5 dual core processors going into it.

So at the very least there will be a new iPhone this June, 2011, and it will have dual core 1ghz processors.

- Will it be called iPhone 4GS ? or iPhone5 ? Who knows.

- Will it have more ram and memory ? Most likely, I have heard it might get 1gb Ram, and double the memory the iPhone4 has.

- Rumors of a better and longer lasting battery

- Larger screen ? Maybe, maybe not. No good rumors to really support this yet, I could see it going to 3.7" easily, and at the very best but doubtful a 4" screen size, but who knows.

- The biggest change/revision will be iOS5, some big time changes to how the iOS looks and operates. Will be very competitive to Android with widgets, and notifications, etc...

And even fewer understand that while it was double the physical RAM, it was triple the usable RAM.

Oh I know. Just like what's going to happen if the rumored specs (dual core A9 Cortex CPU, massively upgraded GPU, etc) that are being tossed around as going in the "iPhone 5" (again, whatever they call it) end up being in the next iPhone, but the external design remains relatively the same. People are going to think that because they don't "see" a whole lot of difference, that's it's a "minor" upgrade. When the truth is if it gets those rumored specs, the next gen iPhone will be vastly more powerful than the iPhone 4 is now. Just how the 3GS was 2-3 times more powerful than the 3G, but very few people knew that.

The 3GS still is very quick with iOS 4. Whatever Apple did to the 3GS or iOS 4, it works. (unlike the 3G with iOS 4)

The 3GS is essentially the same as the iPhone 4, that's why it runs very closely in speed. The only real difference is the doubling of the RAM from 3GS to 4. The 3G was the same CPU and GPU as the original iPhone, which is why it can barely handle iOS4.

The iPhone is following very similar trends as do VideoCards. It is very common in the tech industry and smart.

Look at ATI and nVidia. Some years they come out with huge leaps in tech and major upgrades in performance, and then some years it is just a refresh with minor tweaks, etc...But every year they always have a new card released.

I think people don't realize that the iPhone4 is closer in tech to the iPhone3GS than the iPhone3G is to the 3GS. It is iOS4 that is the big difference, plus the body of the iPhone4 that is the major difference. I expect this Summers iPhone to be a pretty good improvement.

you are absolutely right! There is no iPhone 5 coming out this year. It's going to be called the iPhone 4GS and it will be out in June. (only on AT&T) :D
