With the inevitably fall of RIM and their Blackberrys in the US market, there will be a place in the smartphone market for Microsoft and Nokia.

Microsoft wouldn't have missed the whole smartphone revolution if they didn't have Steve Ballmer as CEO. What an idiot.

I see someone gets it.

Things happen top-down. You can have some incredible talent (who are beholden to management) but if you have serious leadership issues, you're toast.

I'll keep my iPhone thanks but to be fair and honest I like the look of the lumia 800. The other one isn't so bad either!

----------

I thought I'd like the advertised turquoise color but OMG it looks like plastic crap in real life !

Image

True! but make it in that color but using aluminum and it'd be pretty smokin!

As much as I like it, it doesn't matter. Nokia may or may not be bringing it to the US sometime in 2012. By then we're getting much close to iPhone 5.

This phone, if it was out now, on multiple carriers, might be the shot in the arm they need.

But they are simply too late to the game.

Do you have a point in this anywhere?

Are you being deliberately obtuse? People are complaining about Nokia offering colors. Were colors good when Apple offered them and bad now? Or was Apple wrong in offering only colors for years? Also, when the alternative to offering colors is to offer black and white, people then make the (absurd) claim that it's copying Apple to release in black and white. It provides a convenient excuse to hate the competition no matter what they do.

This is also remarkably similar to slamming phones for being made out of plastic, after Apple sold millions of phones made out of plastic, and still offers them.

This is an important post.

Even though your second statement is encouraging, it is effectively nullified by the first: Consumers that would rather stick with what they have or stick with someone from whom they know what to expect.

The whole "They look great but I'll keep my iPhone" response is the exact situation MS and Nokia want to avoid, which has been plaguing them, and which might very well spell disaster down the road.

Another example of seeing the market clearly and understanding its collective behaviour.

You know nothing about what to expect from Apple. When my 3Gs died, I went with WP7 partly because I prefer roadmaps over secrecy and unannounced cancellation of product lines. I was planning on getting the (now 4s) in June when my contract was up. That worked out well for me. We "know" what to expect from Apple right up until they change it suddenly.

Blockbuster products that create long lineups, mad anticipation, which end up making Apple a ****-ton of cash? Chances are, the iPhone 5 will be no different. Chances are, the next iPad will be no different. And so on. Both devices are updated once a year.

That sound about right?

It's Apple. Have you been keeping up with events in tech for the last decade (especially since 2007)? Unless Cupertino is vaporized tomorrow they'll probably continue along the same lines for quite some time to come.

Ugh... can't be bothered to read all 13 pages of posts, but suffice it to say once again I call for a dedicated forum for alternatives to the iPhone. At least this time the marketing effort of MS/Nokia seems more subtle than amateurish Samsung: Instead of having marketers posting as newbies about how a new phone is THE iPhone killer (e.g., the SGSII *cough* *cough*), the MS/Nokia marketers are rigging the votes on posts.

In any case I wish MS luck with their OS, but the new, angular Nokia model is criminally U-G-L-Y. And since the OS is a work in progress... why buy it?

I loved the design of the N8 and it looks like the N9 and the Lumia 800 continue that design.

Hopefully this will pull Microsoft out of the smartphone lull it's worked itself into and will help Nokia move back up the ranks as a leading smartphone distributor.

Vic Gundatora may have said "Two turkeys don't make an eagle" but Microsoft and Nokia have made a compelling handset in the Lumia 800 IMO.

I'm not entirely sold on the 710 but it could work out to be a good budget model. I fear ZTE will take the WP7 low end tho.

As a consumer, you still don't know what to expect from the next iteration of anything Apple does. That's what you were talking about until you moved the goalposts to sales. You have a lot of practice at that, of course.

Do you really need to wonder why?

Apple's ecosystem is fully fleshed out and refined, having put User Experience front and centre. That's why it's so successful, that's why iOS does so well, that's why it's a model for others

This is a chicken-egg type of situation. Apple copies from others and others copy from Apple. You can have this discussion all day and turn blue in the face.

P.S. LTD - Jobs put what HE thought the UE should be front and centre despite being wrong quite a few times. And when other developers created apps that filled in the gaps - he either bought them (siri) or he "borrowed" them.

The email app is still sorely lacking in many ways.
It took just a few years for them to change alerts/notifications
and so on.

I'm not saying iOS is bad or that it isn't the "gold" standard. I'm simply saying that you just blindly accept that if Apple hasn't done it or isn't doing it - it's wrong or shouldn't be done.

That's foolish.

they will be a hit. bitch as much as u want on here but its a fact, just look at those prices. they look pretty decent and have nice features for that price.

apple might be in good shape for now but its not the first high horse that gets brought back to reality (hint: more and more people favor android and the news peeps feature it a lot more these days too)

now u can vote me down :p still love my iPhone 4 btw

That's because when your whole world is Apple - nothing matters unless Apple provides it apparently. It's the whole reality distortion field at its best.

Yep, and anybody that disagree's with you is an "Apple Fanboy". Good thing we have you around to patrol the forums here to point this stuff out.

Apple doesn't need to directly attack google regarding its patents. All apple has to do is create enough litigative hell that manufacturers get scared off. Hello windows mobile 7 phones! I hope bill appreciates the irony! Maybe Nokia picked the right horse after all?

Apple fans do have a tendency to focus so narrowly on Apple that they think they invented everything because they never saw it until Apple had it. Then they accuse everyone else of copying Apple, when Apple was nowhere near the first.

Can you point to where I called anyone a fan boy? Just like I avoid using hater and troll.

You can't. Because I avoid that word at all costs unless I'm quoting someone.

And that's your own paranoia. Just like you can express your opinion - I can express mine.

And thanks - I'm happy to point out hypocrisy, stupidity and when others fail to think differently - especially when it's obvious.

Except that they have changed it a bunch of times. They had N and E series phones, then added C and X series, dropped the letters, and now seem to have started over again with numbers.

The post called for them to change to something simple. I explained that they have done just that.

That's funny. Apple never seems to play well with anyone else, outside of iTunes on Windows. Are they going to open up iCloud to let MS interface with it? I'm sure that's coming. Apple locks you into their "ecosystem" to force you to stay. Somehow, that's a positive, but anyone else trying to lock you up is a negative.

Not exactly sure what you are after, but iCloud does work with Windows.

Apple Inc said:
iCloud works with just about everything you do on just about every device you use — including your Mac or PC.

It's about track records. Apple's is pretty stellar (an understatement) in all areas, especially over the last few years. MS' is pretty lousy, and their WP7 history over the past year isn't very encouraging. Neither is Nokia's. So far, two turkeys indeed.

It isn't really that I and others don't want to give WP7 a fair shot, rather, it's that a) it already had its shot and consumers have responded (or not), and b) it's still the same people running the show at MS for years: Ballmer et al. So what's magically changed this time around?

Nokia Lumia 800: The designer's story

I would rather get the N9 but there are trade-offs.

- Lumia 800 gets the faster processor, longer battery life, more supported OS, cheaper, and like more available in different regions.

- N9 gets a nicer looking OS (subjective), front-facing camera, slightly bigger screen, weighs lighter, has 64GB option, NFC, and double the RAM.

N9 = geeks, Nokia purists
L800 = mainstream

L800 will likely sell more, but N9 could be more versatile in the longer run since MeeGo is open source. The homebrew community can eventually try to put WP7 onto a N9 model. Majority WP7 doesn't have an expandable slot (sans Focus) and the only thing you can customize is the tile colors. MeeGo took some of the best elements of WP7 and iOS. L800 will get official updates and has the better future/ecosystem though.

I generally like TI's OMAP more than Qualcomm's, but it is odd L800 is at 1.4GHz and still has longer battery life than N9. WP7 is a light and efficient OS and Qualcomm's manufacturing process is probably at 45mm or 28mm which makes it even more power efficient.

God damn you, Nokia! Why do have to make this so hard? I will get whichever one in cyan, but picking the right twin isn't that easy as it looks. In cyan, it looks great with either OS. Cyan is unisex and this matches well if you sport Carolina Blue or whatever team closely matches the color.

Either way, my first WP7 or MeeGo phone will be a Nokia.

Damn the 800 looks good. Instantly reminded me of the old iPod Mini, which was a very nice design for its time, as I think this will come to be known, especially in light of the issues surrounding the alternative of making it look like an iDevice - good job Nokia! And the 715, available in white at launch! And the one shot so far has it looking really nice as well, like ... well, like a phone! Great job at originality in this market; ironic that the primary reaction here (well apart from the incessant and ignorant "what's it doing on a Mac site OMGWTFBBQ") is that it sucks for not looking like the iPhone - can't help but lol.

I haven't spent long on WP7 but these look tempting. I just hope that system is going to be updated; the worst thing about Android is the version fragmentation. NO, wait, the worst thing is that people have no idea what Android version they have, AND they don't care :(. If this can go Mango and beyond, "like"!

We all now how that turned out.

We? I'm pretty sure I didn't post in that thread.

And the past doesn't always equal the future. If it did - Apple would always be a failure. Things change. Things can surprise. But you'd never acknowledge it even if it happened. You're running on a single track, LTD. We all see and know it.

As I've said before - you should go work for Apple because you clearly are very passionate about the company. And if you already work for Apple - you should state that you do so your posts are genuine and honest in that we know why there's a bias. Otherwise - you come across as the epitome of what most people can't stand in Apple enthusiasts.

funny how Nokia story has more comments than any other story on home page. Still think Nokia and WP7 will have no traction?
