You heard it here first folks! Apple computers hold a higher perceived value and you get what you pay for continues to regain legitimacy as Apple continues to grow.

Yet Apple continues to remain in the single digits for overall computer market share.

Like I already said this a very misleading stat.

Every single time...

Where are the pundits NOW?

Macs - MARKET LEADERS
iPods - MARKET LEADERS
iPhones - MARKET LEADERS
iPads - FUTURE MARKET LEADERS

MS IS DEAD. AND SO IS ADOBE.

Macs are not market leaders. Also, MS is not dead. Neither is Adobe.

All of those companies still exist...

Packard Bell exists, why can't I buy their computers anymore? IBM sold their computer division to Lenovo because they couldn't make any money. Lenovo can't seem to make any more either these days off them. Maybe they might sell them to someone else or get bought up.

The Premium end of the market is at the top of the retail pyramid. It's narrow and carries a $1000+ entry fee.

Not everyone is able to buy in. Yet, more people with $1000+ are buying in.

Obviously, cheap and plentfiful is always going to outsell macs in sheer volume. And when that netbook breaks you just head out and buy a new one. Now THAT is repeat sales!

You need to venture outside of the United States for Packard Bell. IBM moved on to a strictly business and service market. Lenovo is disturbingly much more popular than you think.

Do a little more research next time. You post often without much experience. Calm down and think about it first.

That's not what those 90% of those people thought when they bought a Mac. If they thought it was appalling as you said, why would they buy it in the first place right? Apple must of did something right to be able to get those many people to buy a Mac.

Yes they market produts well and put rubbish hardware in an amazing case and charge massive amounts. This is a great business plan for profit.

The majority of people don't know anything about computer hardware or care for that matter.

Most people wont know what an i7 or an i5 is. I have a friend who still thinks more GHz is always better (as in the old days of single core and the answer was to always increase clock speed, not multi thread).

Currently on the apple site 8 GB of RAM is £163. I got mine for £80 on the PC. This really is good business for Apple. The consumer is getting ripped off with last years hardware (maybe even 2 years).

I don't have a problem with this but I think it is silly this article points out that apple is selling 90% of high end PCs when in fact it is selling 90% of low performance PCs at a high price.

Yup. IBM's mantle is maintained by Lenovo. Here in the UK I've only really seen IBM/Lenovo for business machines unless I was sat in a meeting with either a Dell or HP employee.
Infact my current work laptop is a Lenovo..

iMacs are hardly premium machines, they lag far behind a power built Windows machine in performance.

Apple has tied their computers to OSX and OSX to their computers, which in my humble opinion is a monopoly.

Hence all the crying about that little clone company that only sold around 600 or 700 total systems using OSX.

Are iMacs nice? Yes I own two of them, but it will more then likely be the only two. I also own a MacBook Pro and yes it crashes just like a window machine, in fact it crashed today shortly after I started it up.

This computer is running Snow leopard as are the two iMacs.

Apple has its issues just like Windows does.

People still buy computers from B&M retail outlets? Wow I'm far too lazy for that, best to have a minimum wage minion deliver it to your door. I know I was when I built a bleeding edge PC last year. (To balance the nice but weedy MBP)

I was surprised by the ThinkPad Edge and the Hybrid U1 at CES.

Now think if Apple had a mid-range desktop and lowered the price of the MacBook and added more customization options how much their market share would increase.

No you do the research, PC companies aren't making money, they are discounting so much, that they can't profit of their computers, we all know how successful those types of business plans are:
http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748704343104575034233214601248.html

It is just a matter of time until more fold up shop or get bought. The only company making money of PC's is Microsoft.

Yeah and Microsoft has tied their Zune software to the Zune which in my opinion is a monopoly.

this thread is full of loser win.

thanks for the entertaining afternoon read, chaps.

I have two mac pros and I can see the pointlessness of this "research" data.

I've actually taken one of these surveys from NPD in the past, and I can tell you that the only real question you're trying to answer is "what is the correct button to push to keep them from kicking me out of the survey because I don't match their "target survey audience."

When you do these surveys, they condition you to guess what the "right" answer will be, because so often you'll select the wrong "income bracket" or "how often do you comparison shop for automotive insurance" multiple choice bracket and get kicked out of the survey before you get your "prize" credits.

Look at Dell.com or BestBuy.com or Walmart.com and see what their best-selling computer models are.

Compare those to Macs. Go use Win 7 for a couple of hours. I get it. There's really not much of a motivation to buy Mac hardware these days. Especially not if you want to give a hackintosh a go.

I do know that unless something changes, my 2008 mac pro will be my last apple-built desktop machine. Nothing wrong with it, but I know I paid extra money for pretty RAM risers and military-grade brushed aluminum SATA drive covers that nobody will ever see unless something goes wrong. A machine where a "sanctioned" graphics card upgrade would cost more than a PS3 and probably put me on-par graphically with a 150 dollar non-Mac card.

Laptops are a different story, but I'm not sure how much longer that will be the case. If the iPon is any indication, Apple is going increasingly in the opposite direction of its "power users" in the design/photography/audio world.

They figured out that we're too much of a fringe market for their growth requirements, and that they can't charge 3500 for a machine with 800 dollars worth of parts in it anymore, so they're just going to cut their losses.

I think they want OS X to die off eventually, or at least to become irrelevant, in favor of the ipod/ipon os. Maybe they will "sacrifice" OS X by enabling it to be easily installed on PC hardware "legally" in a couple years and then sort of abandon it. They really like the iTMS/App Store closed-loop system they've created. The ipon's crippled OS is proof...

You should take some vicodin before your head explodes.

No you do the research...
I don't need to research because I lived it. I remember and experienced those times. I replied to your earlier post solely on what I knew. You're making me feel old to be honest.

Calm down and do some research first before going off and saying everyone but Apple is dead. It's not going to get you pats on the back.

But a lot of points the rumor/report doesn't take into consideration:

1)Retailers (brick and mortar) typically are not stocking $1000+ "computers" these days as the majority of their inventory. I would gather that a very very high percentage of desktops in the brick and mortar shops are $499-$799. Latops are probably $599-$999.

2)So what if Apple has 90% marketshare of the $1000+ computers? And? How many $1000+ computers were sold last year in brick and mortar stores?

3)Define "computer"....laptop? desktop? monitor included? A lot of the "computers" at brick and mortar stores are really computer systems/computer sets...which come with a discounted $100 printer or multiple choices for monitors.

4)What about all the online stores like Dell, Amazon, HP, Newegg, etc? Stores can only stock a certain level of pre-configured machines. And since Apple offers very few choices of "configuration" when buying an iMac for example, it's very easy for a physical store to stock the Macs. I think more people buy a computer from the web where you can configure the specs, color (if it's a laptop), buy accessories, etc. and have it all shipped to your home.

5)The Windows pc industry broke the sub-$1000 computer market about 10 years ago...as competition gained, consumer demand exploded, and costs fell. Apple notoriously makes a huge profit/margin by selling low volume. Nothing wrong with that. But you really can't make a quick comparison with 1 report. Apple still has less than 10% of personal computer marketshare even though by all the reports you read on MacRumors that Macs are growing by leaps and bounds.

6)Why are people all over MS for this? Microsoft DOES NOT MAKE COMPUTERS...MS makes software....it's Apple vs. the Windows PC HARDWARE INDUSTRY...not Apple vs. MS.

It's great that Apple owns the $1000+ market in the brick and mortar market, but I think the report (as most reports) exposes quite a bit of questions (as I've raised here) for anyone who cares about this topic.

I could also say 100% of <$999 PCs sold were not Macs. :D
Anyway, this definitely put a lot of pressure to Windows PC manufactures, as they would have to depend more and more to low margin high volume sales, since once their prices go to above $1000, consumers would have the "Ah crap, if I'm spending this much money, might as well get a Mac" mentality.

This is MS' problem. They have no issues when it comes to unit sales or even profit, but their brand image is in the toilet. When people with money choose *not* to buy your products, you've got a major problem.

Ehrmm.

1. AFAIK, MS had one of the best periods ever. People WANT windows 7, as much as it seems to pain you.

2. If you wanted to make fun of PCs, go ahead and pick any other HARDWARE manufacturer. Comparing Apple PC sales to MS is one of the most idiotic things I've seen in here.

Got to love blind haters though. Question their arguments at all and you are called a fanboy

Argument from fallacy.... And I hope you noticed a disturbing trend in the past days after the iPad announcement: a lot of people having a negative opinion about it where being called "trolls". It goes both ways.
