No, they are 2 different technologies so one will not affect the other being locked or not. Even if they were on the same technology, our #### carriers in the US wouldn't allow them to be unlocked.

I was afraid to say it, but alas, this rings true.

I guess we'll have to wait for 3 or more carriers for unlocked iPhoneries, eh?

I think it will take an act of Congress to see unlocked phones proliferate in the States.

So how does that adapter work with HDCP? You obviously have no idea what I was referring to. A mini-display port to HDMI adapter is great for displaying your desktop on a tv set via an HDMI connection, but it will do nothing to display an HDCP protected video from some other device to an iMac screen.

P.S. Don't be a dick.

DisplayPort supports HDCP, as do most decent DP-HDMI adpaters (like the one from monoprice).

You do realize btw that HDMI is just DVI + sound and an aux channel in an easy to connect cable, right? And that HDCP is an encryption/enforcement layer that can be used on mulriple types of hardware layers, not just HDMI/DVI?

DisplayPort is the replacement for DVI on computers, includes all the advantages of HDMI plus it supports a number of things HDMI doesn't, including simplifying wiring internally in machines with built in displays (like most of Apple's).

What hell are you talking about? Changing the app makes no difference when there is no internet service to find. If you're on a call, on Verizon, GPS is done until you hang up. These are all AGPS modules after all, and need the internet to function, ...

GPS on the Incredible, as with the iPhone, does not need the internet to function. The Assisted part of AGPS is only about getting your first location fix quicker. After that, it operates in standalone mode. So continuing to get location info is not a problem.

Only if you're using an internet-based app and trying to get map information that's not already downloaded, would you have a problem. So as you said, it depends on what "GPS app" is being used, and how much info has been cached.

In this case, I assumed (perhaps mistakenly) that all she needed to do was read her current directions list to her friend. Otherwise, yes, she'd have to hang up, get more info, then call back.

Wirelessly posted (Opera/9.50 (Nintendo DSi; Opera/507; U; en-US))

It aids that Verizon will allow you to trash your old iPhone for 1/2 its value on their website.

I have difficulty believing that Apple would go through the trouble of making a special CMDA iPhone just for Verizon (the company that originally snubbed Apple's iPhone proposal), when LTE is only a year or so away. With both Verizon and AT&T adopting the same LTE standard, Apple could make just one phone for both networks. At that point, it would make sense for Verizon to carry the iPhone.

Plus, doesn't Verizon have the CMDA problem of not being able to handle data and voice simultaneously? It seems like that would make FaceTime inoperable (when Apple allows it to work over cell networks).

Again... you really don't get it. LTE does not mean no CDMA. You have to remember that these phones will *still have to be backward compatible.* It would be analogous to when cell phones went from analog to digital. There are *still* phones today that are backwards compatible to analog.

CDMA will still have to be supported for at least another 5 to 10 years. Do you honestly think that Apple is going to wait that long?

I doubt it.

If it really is just ATT and Verizon, that will be lame. Hopefully Apple is going to open the iphone to other carriers too. Sprint hypothetically is the furthest along in their 4G network, I would hope they get the iphone for that alone.

I hope Verizon gets the iPhone and I hope they don't screw it up. I'd say its 50/50 on the first and 90/10 on the second (90% that they will screw it up). The sad reality is Verizon and ATT are very similar - if they could get another nickel a month from you they would. How come all the cell companies in the US suck?

what exactly makes this rumor confirmed? NY times? lmfao dont make me laugh. thats just as good as saying "VZW rep confirms verizon iphone for next year"

Commercial Suggestion for AT&T

AT&T should create a new commercial for this Holiday Season.

Scene: Island of Misfit Toys

A bunch of misfit toys circle around a Verizon vPhone and the spotted elephant says to the vPhone, "Why are you here and so unhappy?"

The vPhone says, "They put me on Verizon. Now I can't surf the internet or run any internet application while I talk on the Phone. Also, my top speed went down from 7.2mbs to 3mbs. My CDMA signal drains my battery faster and I can no longer use any of the free 20,000 wifi hotspots. On top of that, any calling minute that I don't use each month, I lose. And just look at me!.....there are Verizon "V"s all over my skin".

You guys are pathetic. Apple doesn't release iPhone's in January. And since when did NYTimes ever have the ability to "confirm" a product that hasn't been announced. I really hope steve Jobs is laughing at this article.

Verizon sucks anyway. Sprint would of probably changed the world of all CDMA iPhone users in the future.

I personally love verizon. Been holding out on an iphone since it's introduction because I never wanted to leave. If an iPhone comes to verizon, I'll be one of the first in line.

1) Try Googling VoRA and SVDO. If Verizon gets the iPhone most likely Verizon will implement one of these 2 technologies to enable simultaneous voice & data.

2) I have yet to see anything close to 7.2Mbps on my iPhone. I've only hit 3Mbps once. The difference in data speed for Verizon vs AT&T is highly exagerated.

3) The only free WiFi hotspots I ever see are @ $bux where I have the use of for all of the 10 minutes I'm there to get my latte.

4) If you have a lot of rollover minutes, you're paying for the wrong plan. Most users rack up tons of rollover minutes and never use them because they never go over their allotted minutes.

5) Apple has not allowed any carrier to brand the iPhone. Verizon will realize this is a fact of life and we will not see a Verizon logo on the iPhone.

Yeah, and they didn't release iPhone's in July before the first iPhone. And they don't release iPhones in September either. Oh...wait...yes they do in China. There's always a first time for everything and circumstances change. It's very likely that a CDMA iPhone and a GSM iPhone would be on different release cycles.

same here man, but ive personally had enough of waiting. plus i wouldnt mind the cheaper bill compared to verizon lolz.

No one blames you! But this is happening. And its not because wsj or ign or ny times said so!

Yea totally useless!!!! Because it only works in the county I live in! It only works in the country I never leave!

I feel sorry for you if you never leave your country.

Some of us has a job that involves travel. And some of us likes vacations outside our borders.

Jesus.

I'm getting bored with these rumors

I'm on Sprint until at least August, 2011. Then I will have to decide what to do about an iPhone.

And....that's where you will get sued for falsely advertising a company like that. Good thing you are not in advertising or marketing. That's pathetic.

Wsj is never right so I don't consider anything from them. Nyt is just copying everything just like all the news channels will be doing soon.

WSJ is *never* right?

That's quite the bold statement there.

They have been talking about a Verizon iPhone since the iPhone came out. So that is three years plus around 3 times a year. Soo yah

Again... so they're *always* wrong?

Like how in '06 they announced Apple switching to Intel? They were wrong then?

wowsers... I didn't know we were still on PowerPC.
