Um ok. What am i wrong about please? I am reading many threads, and O2 online, and I believe, what I said was correct. please correct me if i am wrong. I don't think I am though.

interesting one phoned up customer services spoke to a guy that said i could go in store on friday as an existing iphone owner, i say my thank you's and hang up a minute later get a phone call from the same guy telling me he had made a mistake and i could only order online oh well i guess that's that then?
He also said keep an eye on the site will be back up soon!

This is what it says on O2 site..... its a big risk unless you are one of the lucky ones....

Since the online store didn't open till 08:02 and my order completed at 08:09 and got my order comfirmation mail at 08:12, I will be pretty pissed if I don't get mine on Friday.

From the O2 website under the heading Existing iPhone customers upgrade to iPhone 3G for free:
"This special early upgrade offer is only available online at o2.co.uk until 11th October 2008." (Emphasis mine)

Further down the page under the heading With O2 but don't have an iPhone?:
"The iPhone 3G will then be available for upgrade from 11th July at 8.02am in any of our O2 high street stores. Any stores in shopping centres will open at their usual times."

That looks to me like if you have an iPhone already you can only upgrade online.

Yeah, if this continues they're gonna have to allow in-store upgrades for existing iPhone owners.

what a royal cock up this is turning out to be! Good ol' o2 couldn't organise a piss up in a brewery. No wonder so many people jailbroke their phones to escape the useless turds.

Just copying someone elses post from the other thread: no existing iPhone customers instore, and online shop up again soon!:

...meanwhile someone else has been told by O2 that the store will be back up this afternoon.

Its a right shambles.

Well give them their due...it is the most hyped launch of a product. The website can't handle the traffic in the first 5 hours. The product isn't launched for another 5 days.

Maybe they should have anticipated the known number of email "interest expressers" would all log-on in the first hour...maybe they should have passed out the invitation emails in phases.

To be fair, they did phase the text messages this morning, but clearly their infrastructure couldn't cope with demand. Which is strange as they'd have known how many people had pre-registered an interest.

Bottom line is we don't know how long they've had to prepare for this I guess. We just don't know when Apple let them know how many units they'd be getting etc.

Just phoned O2, this is what they said (for existing iPhone customers)

The website is down due to so many people trying to access it (we know!).
They are trying to get it back up, but don't know how long it will take.

You can wait for the site to come back up and order online OR
Wait till Friday and you can order over the phone (08706003009, free from an O2 line).

So I guess that confirms, no upgrading for existing iPhone customers in store on Friday, but telephone sales will go live.

PS, lovely weather here in Brighton! :p

spoketo o2 customer services, who said all we can do is to try back in a few hours!

Also just to confirm, there are no White iPhones from o2...... which tbh is pathetic! Or is this another reason to make new customers purchase from the apple shop!

Website still down at 10:50

Did anybody get an order in? Cos all I got was the there has been a problem please try again message!

Grr

Si

I wonder how many hits they got? how many is enough to bring down their servers? After all it was only 0800 in the morning!..

Has anyone tried ringing an Apple store in the UK to see if they will be selling the white version? I would try call the Bullring store in Birmingham, but can't get to a phone at the moment.

Probably not that many, compared to many sites.. they clearly didn't have a plan to handle it.. or maybe they thought that the 100,000 people who preregistered were only joking?

CPW for me Friday morning, I have given up with O2

I have just called my local CPW

At the moment they have no idea exactly what the upgrade process will be. There is a meeting taking place tomorrow in which info will be released to ALL stores regarding the upgrade process.

This came from a Manager, who sounded very confident and seemed to know exactly what he was on about.

[sorry about the thread drift]

I reckon it was a combination of hits and buggy scripts. The upgrade pages were different scripts to their normal online shop, and there was probably code that doesn't work well under pressure.

They are probably trying to improve the code now. It might take a while.

I find it hard to believe that 8am on a monday there was enought to crash the O2 server? If so someone very seriously under estimated the appeal.

Its strange as not one person in my office is remotely aware or interested in the new handset.

Not at all, this kind of information is most welcome at this time!

My thoughts are now starting to turn.

I may have a contract with O2, but if CPW can do a better job than O2 at delivering the phone/upgrade then i am happy to give them my money not O2!!!!!!!!!
