Mate, right now I'm just pleased to have got through the process with a confirmation number and a shred of sanity leftover!

Im at the page before there, and it wont let me go any more!! What time did you do that.

I think I'm going around in circles. I always get routed back to the empty form, with no confirmation or anything. And now the system seems incapable of sending me yet another Upgrade Code.

I've either ordered 167 iPhones, or none. And I get the feeling it may be the latter.

Also, do you get to specify Black or White 16Gb?? Still struggling to get past clicking on tariff and phone options....

It lets you select it, but I am suspicious that they will take the order then not deliver for up to 2 weeks as per their message this morning as the existing stock will be sold out. I backed out when I saw the ordering page.

I suspect there is manual intervention in the upgrade process and so no real time check of stock levels.

It seems that the upgrade site "may" be down for maintenence.

Considering all of 2 people have actually managed an upgrade I do wonder what exactly is going on with O2!

and it's a right shambles.. i can't even access my online account anymore (bills/usage etc..).. it says thanks for signing in, click the link below to go back to the homepage!!!!

G R E A T

Looks like Carphone Warehouse is out of stock and O2 has only the 8 GB phones left.

Online allocation of 16GB sold out

This must be a marketing ploy. Generate a lot of press...

Exactly my thoughts.

This shambles is a deliberate ploy to increase the feeding frenzy for Friday.

There is nothing quite like a perceived shortage to encourage people to queue and buy, even if they were not sure about wanting one in the first place!

Well, I know for one what I'm going to do ...

.. and that is, be at my local O2 store on Friday morning, with the intention to buy a black 16GB iPhone 3G.

... If it for some reason is not available, I'll go somewhere else, until I find one in stock.

Forget this - waiting on a web page to determine stock availability, lark.

Wow, nearly made it all the way to the checkout before crashing this time. The status bar does say its loaded with errors, so that's not a good sign in itself I guess.

The web server is crashing because of high demand and every so often it is being reset, either automatically or manually. O2 should be taking the server offline completely and taking steps to add more capacity, via more servers or beefier hardware.

Every time you see the "Please enter your mobile number" screen you have a very short time to make it through all of the steps before the server fails again.

If someone does want an 8GB, is there a way of having the form information kept or filled in more quickly/automatically?

ive been trying pretty much all morning, just the same old screen again and again, looks like there will be more of a queue in line outside the stores then. hopefullt not mine. see you guys there by the looks of it.... dam o2.

It's a pretty shocking display of ineptitude by O2
If they're running out of capacity on their servers, then they should be doing some gatekeeping at the load balancers to ensure that the back end servers can cope once you get through to them.
Unless, of course, they're running it all on a single Dell server ;)

The web form failing is nothing to do with any particular version of the phone.

True - it just sounded like on ly the 8GB was left.

I'd imagine this story will be spunn by O2 as something more positive, and they'll chuck a couple thousand more handsets into the online store some time before Friday. Otherwise they'll be leaving a lot of loyal / current iPhone customers fuming.

Also, their "contact us" form is down so I can't even send the vitriolic and scathing email I just composed. :p

on the 02 front end site it says you will only need a credit/debit card if the upgrade is over £100, do they put the £59 on your bill?

paste the email and we can all send it to them and hopefully break their email server as well
