The main question is what is happening with this fallover form...

If O2 are going to process them and let us now it would be great... if they are not gonna tell us anything then its not helpful.

I don't see how this can be fair that despite most of us being on here from 8am that we don't have confirmed iphone 3G's because of o2 being incompetant.

I may well go and risk carphonewarehouse although I don't trust them at all!

Its not the end of the world and talk of suing/threatening O2 is just ridiculous. But I don't think its much to expect O2 to be able to deal with levels of traffic which they should have been expecting thanks to the number of pre-registrations they took.

Very strange way to do things and if ordering online is the only way for existing customers to upgrade, then why weren't they dealt with first? Even if it was just a small section of stock set aside for pre-ordering through your account control panel or something.

It'll be ironic if stock problems encourage people to stick with their first-gen iPhones for longer and/or move away from O2.

If you look at the carphonewarehouse site it says you can upgrade instore now - I guess pre-ordering as such.

From carphone warehouse:

Existing customers

Existing O2 customers upgrade to iPhone for free*
Existing iPhone customer?

To thank you for being an iPhone fan, we're offering you an early upgrade to the brand new version when it launches in July 2008. You won't have to wait until the end of your existing contract either, all you'll need to do is agree to a new 18-month minimum term contract.

*Best of all, the new 8GB iPhone won't cost you a penny on our £45 and £75 tariffs. And it's just £99 on our £35 tariff and new £30 tariff. This special early upgrade offer is only available online at o2.co.uk anytime from early July until 9th October 2008.

* 8GB iPhone provided at no additional cost on £45 and £75 p/m tariffs when you connect to a new minimum term contract. Subject to availability. Connection subject to status, 18 month minimum term contract, credit check & direct debit. Calls/texts made in UK to standard UK landlines/mobiles only. Data usage whilst roaming not included. Excessive usage policy and full terms apply.

Call our eSales team on 0870 087 0870 or go in-store to upgrade now.

but if you read it, that is for O2 customers, the paragraph about iphone customers says only on o2.co.uk

Also just got off the phone with O2.

They had an allocation of iPhones for online upgrades.

They've suspended pre-order allocations to this allocated batch of iPhones, temporalily,
to assess the amount of iPhone's pre-ordered, within the time slot, this morning.

O2 will re-open pre-order allocations for the iPhone's left, on Thursday.

O2 Retail shops and online upgrades are allocated 2 different batches of iPhones.
They have therefore only technically 'SOLD OUT', online.

What i find so funny about all this (and again , not directed at the poor people trying to get on the web site) is that on the one hand O2 complains about the number of people hacking the 1st gen, and then on the other they make the release of the 2nd gen such a c**k up!

Absolutely – and until now I wouldn't really have considered unlocking/hacking an iPhone, but for the first time I'm starting to see the attraction.

Although pre-ordering the day before launch is unlikely to get you it on time ?

I really want someone to confirm iphone customers can upgrade in store. I never get the same answer when I phone o2.

Shambles

Let's face it - the whole process has been an utter shambles. Like many people here - I have spent much of my morning trying to secure an online upgrade. Got 3 activation numbers, went through the package selection process several times and every time the system fell over. Spoke to O2 customer services and they just said to keep trying. Worse than trying to buy tickets for Glastonbury last year. And the fact that we all registered weeks in advance ended up meaning less than nothing. And now I notice the customer services area of the web site has gone down. Probably so many people complaining.

Anyway, one ray of hope. There seems to be lots of confusion about whether or not you'll be able to upgrade in store on Friday. But the O2 web site cleartly states that you can. See the bottom of this page...

http://www.o2.co.uk/iphone/paymonthly

"The iPhone 3G will then be available for upgrade from 11th July at 8.02am in any of our O2 high street stores. Any stores in shopping centres will open at their usual times.2

I guess that's what I'll be doing then

But that's the problem. There's going to be stock in their stores on Friday, but its not going to be of any use to existing customers!

Earlier today a few people were saying that it doesn't matter if the stock is split between stores and online. The real problem is if the stock for online orders is just one big pool, rather than being split between new and existing customers.

Ok, so whats happening at Apple stores, I thought someone had said that they were taking both new sales and also upgrades for exisiting?

Am I totally wrong here?

Apple Stores in the UK will not be selling iPhone 3G (at least for now). The only two places where you can get one are Carphone Warehouse and O2.

I think that the biggest question we need answering.

Can we upgrade in a o2 or carphone warehouse shop?!

Umms and Errs and allsorts of questions and answers are being quoted, but right now would you trust half a sentence hidden on the O2 webiste.

O2!!

Does anyone know whats going on with the fallback form?
I cant be bothered to ring 02 again i was on hold for an hour and got cut off!

I got spanked this morning as well, first an old style page, then a new style page and nothing worked. I am going down to the o2 store on friday. I wander whether they will open early at 7am...

Call our eSales team on 0870 087 0870 or go in-store to upgrade now.

Thats what it says underneath!

I am going to go ask in store.

E-mail Matthew Key and complain with a contact number and O2 may get back to you.

I put the e-mail above but its:

matthew.key@o2.com

I previously had problems with my iPhone and e-mailed Steve Jobs and got a call from corporate relations in the US so an e-mail to the CEO can only help!

Cheers, Still saved me 150 quid this week, i think i may just downgrade back to a nokia and sell the iphone on, and start using my old 30gb one again

Herse my e-mail

Dear Mr Key,

Well where do i start, lets just say its not with a pat on the back. Cast your mind back to last november when O2 managed to mishandle the launch of the iphone in the Uk, making it too long winded and leaving many people without the phone on the day they had bought it etc etc, But lets not dwell on the past, surely you will have learnt from your mistakes come the 3g upgrade time.

Initially it seems yes, a rather prompt e-mail to say register your interest, then regular updates on future dates. So far so good! could you have done it? Monday morning through the text comes an alert advising on how to upgrade early. Great the text has come through at 8:35 and the site went live at 8:00am, damn i'm 35 minutes behind already. Still should plenty to go round as O2 already know how many existing users have iphones and also who wanted to upgrade, i think............

How wrong can i be! So it try to log on and go through the silly online procedure you have put in place. Over 8 upgrade codes were sent to me in the end and yet still not able to complete as the site was been hit by all the owners who had received the same text as i had. I even phoned up your customer service line to seek help from them. unfortunately the staff member knew all to well the problems being experienced and admitted it was the way o2 had planned ( or not as the case may be) this silly process. Then 14:30 on my 10th attempt at upgrading the site says you are out of stock.

Great, thanks for that. So now after all the build up and promises and instruction following by me its a dead end. But hey i'm just an existing customer so what service do i deserve.

Mr Key when your highly paid directors and managers have their meetings to decide the processes for these launches and change overs heres something you could consider. My mobile number ( which you can get off your system is **********) give me a buzz and just run it past me and i'll see if it sounds feasable. In fact it does'nt have to be just me, you could ring anyone in the phonebook as virtually anyone with a shred of common sense could have told you this process would not work. So consider this a lost customer. The iphone is good but its not worth this sort of crap service and dealing with muppets all the time. I hope you will do the decent thing and publicly apologise to all those current iphone contract holders with you who have been pissed off by this whole shoddy process.

Many thanks for nothing
