I just spoke to a very nice man from the Hampstead O2 store.

He confirmed what has already been said in this thread - that O2 have changed their policy to allow in store upgrades. I also asked about whether they will have white iPhones in stock, and he told me that as far as he's aware they will do. Fingers crossed on that front, then.

Also, they're opening at 8:02.

Well in a way I'm sort of glad that i don't think i got an order through as there is something rather fun about waiting in line for a few hours to be the first to get my hands on an iPhone in my area!

For the original release i waited for 4 1/2 hours to be the first one!

This is all i can picture when i think of O2 and the iphone.......

I just phoned my local store and he confirmed that existing iPhone customers can now upgrade in store. He didn't know at first and asked where I'd heard it, he then checked his stores email and read the message and confirmed it - so GOOD NEWS!!!:D

I was under the impression that simplicity could be upgraded at any point, as you are essentially always in the last month of your contract, which is where you need to be for other contracts to upgrade. I have phoned a number of stores, and have been told simplicity can upgrade in store.

O2 Customer Service.

I've had confirmation from my friend who works in customer services, here in the UK, for o2,
that O2 Simplicity contracts can be upgraded to iPhone 3G at any time, without penalty.

You or anyone else can dis-believe I have a friend in customers services,
but that is the way it stands, currently. :)

I've just got an email from CPW concerning upgraded to the contract iphone. Glad they're on the case. Its only 5pm.

When O2 moved me to Simplicity because I didn't want to upgrade in May (I told them I would rather wait until the 3G iphone was launched) they stated that I could switch at any point in the month and my simplicity final bill will be pro-rata'd. This doesn't seem to be the case from their email to me today, so I have queried it... not happy at all.

Yeh, I just phone again (just to make sure), and as long as you aren't in your first 30 days of your simplicity contract, you can upgrade at any time. As I have had it since November, i'll have no problems (in theory).

I can confirm that we can all now upgrade in store on Friday.

I went into o2 in Brighton and they have an update on their computers saying that upgrades are now allowed for existing iPhone owners.

So good news!

From reading on various forums today the only people o2 have not upset is NEW customers

Yep, and wait till the next iphone release and these "new customers" will then feel the pain that is O2....unless of course O2 has their Apple contract taken off them for being so c**p today!

We can only hope.

But this means we have to queue up with everybody else and wait for their credit checks to go through.

Could be an extremely frustrating time.

Indeed. Just means i'll have to get there even earlier.

What good news??

I am sorry, but yes it is better that we can upgrade in store, but this is the lesser of two evils!.

We now have to queue and pray that they have the model that we want in stock! Some of us are at work and won't be able to get there until lunch time.....no chance for me then!

So yes better, but should have been option from the start and should not be instead of the online upgrade which it now appears to be.

I called O2 customer services to confirm what the guy in Hampstead told me, and what I've read in this thread.

He told me that upgrades will be available to current iPhone customers on Friday, from both O2 and CPW stores. He also kept emphasising that they were on a first come, first served basis and to get there at 8 to avoid disappointment.

I guess they haven't got a lot of phones, or something?

Not sure if this can be true, but i just heard that "O2 retentions claims due to a technical error, not a single existing o2 customer has been able to upgrade today".

Seems they canceled all the pre-orders, oh well, too good to be true anyway.

What do you mean by that?

I managed to order one this morning at 8:30am, but only after several errors. The O2 order tracking page says that it is 'In Progress'.

Not sure if this can be true, but i just heard that "O2 retentions claims due to a technical error, not a single existing o2 customer has been able to upgrade today".

It just gets better and better! lol

Well if as an exisiting iphone user i can upgrade in a store i will be pleased!

I work Near (within 5mins walk) of 3 O2 stores and 3 CPW. I hope one of them will have a handset.

Not sure if this can be true, but i just heard that "O2 retentions claims due to a technical error, not a single existing o2 customer has been able to upgrade today".

If that is the case its the biggest c**k up since germany went on a "french holiday" in 1939.

Was this through the failover form? Or did you get through the proper order form? Or are you a new customer?

New customer, (well, in the sense that I never activated my current iPhone.) I did that order at 8:15am. I started trying at 7:55. It failed a few times just after 8am, but once I added it to my basket, it went through fine.
