Am I getting a phone? Who knows. I tried when the online store first opened and failed. The next time I got a screen saying they received my order and would let me know if there were problems... No receipt number, no text, no e-mail, nothing. I have some people who received a confirmation with a tracking number so I suspect that there will be no big brother for my 1st Gen iPhone.. Still you never know. If it doesn't come and I have to wait until the end of the summer I might be tempted to wait until 32 gig.

02 in one word...... Shambles

Not concerned about getting one online now, my local store has just informed me they will have "pleanty of stock" for both models, not a hint of concern in the guys voice.

iPhone 3G availability update

Summary

Thank you for your interest in iPhone 3G. We are experiencing unprecedented demand for the device and whilst we are confident that all customers who want iPhone 3G will get one by the end of this summer, initial supply is limited and will be for some weeks. Here is what you need to know:

*

O2 and Carphone Warehouse (CPW) stores will have limited numbers of iPhone 3G this Friday 11 July.

*

On average, we will only have a few dozen iPhone 3Gs per store (some stores more, some stores less, dependant upon store size so we expect to sell out quickly). Sales of iPhone 3G will be limited to one per customer and two for business customers.

*

Some O2 stores will open at 8.02am on Friday, others a bit later. Find out more

*

If you do go into an O2 store you will need 2 forms of identification, a valid credit or debit card and proof of address. If you are new to O2 you will also need to pass a credit check if you sign up for an iPhone 3G contract. The average sales transaction processing time will be 20 minutes.

*

Apple will be selling iPhone 3Gs in their stores, but please note that existing O2 customers can only upgrade in an O2 or CPW store.

*

We are working closely with Apple to get additional iPhone 3Gs. These will be coming in on a weekly basis. We'll keep you posted on specific details by updating this web page regularly.

*

We are currently out of stock of iPhone 3Gs via our on-line store, we'll update through www.o2.co.uk when more information becomes available.

*

If you have an existing iPhone you can still enjoy many of the new features by upgrading your software to version 2.0 from 11 July through iTunes.

*

We are sorry that we can't meet all demand as quickly as we'd like but we're sure that when you get your new iPhone 3G you'll agree it's been worth the wait.

If you are one of those customers who tried to use our Online shop on Monday, you might like to read on.

I am sorry that you had a frustrating experience in trying to order iPhone 3G. This note summarises why it happened and what happens now.

From the start, we felt it was important that people should be able to register that they were interested and be kept up to date with each part of the launch. As well as giving people the information they needed to get a new iPhone, it would give us an idea of how many iPhones we would need from Apple.

An amazing 200,000 people registered on the site. Apple can only supply us with a small proportion of that number to start with, but with weekly deliveries, we're confident that everyone who wants an iPhone will be able to get one by the end of the summer. Until then, we realise that some people will be disappointed.

The people who'd registered on our site had the chance to order an iPhone before anyone else. We let them know that they could do this by going online on 7 July and we made it clear that it would be on a first come, first served basis to keep things fair, as stock was limited.

Naturally, we made sure we looked after people already on O2 as well as new customers. And in fact the orders that we received were split 50-50 between new and existing O2 customers.

What went wrong?

Because we were so open about where and when you could pre-order your iPhone, the online shop was always going to be busy. We tried to prepare for this by increasing the online shop's capacity to 250 times its normal rate and testing it over and over again before the launch.

It wasn't enough. I'm really sorry if you couldn't get your order in. We weren't prepared for the speed and volume of people. I'm not sure any website could have been.

What happens now?

If you ordered online and your order went through, we'll text you by 6pm tonight, just to confirm. You'll get your iPhone 3G delivered on Friday 11 July unless you live in one of these remote postcodes. If you haven't had a text by then, I'm afraid your order wasn't successful. Your options if you still want an iPhone will be to either go into a O2 store tomorrow and I would recommend you read the key points at the top of this page or alternatively, check the website in the future for stock availability.

Once again, I'm sorry if you had problems with the online shop on Monday. We're working very closely with Apple to get as much stock as we can for the UK, as quickly as possible.

Thank you

I just don't understand why O2 don't allow us to preorder - I'm happy to place my order and wait several weeks for delivery,

Still, been a bit wet recently, hasn't it? :)

Hee-hee, it has indeed - but it's good for the garden etc.

From what I've heard from various contacts, the main reason it's not offering pre-ordering, is because of very low initial stocks (coupled with hign demand) and no definite timeframe for when the situation will improve.

So here's the question: Lots of people that think they're pre registered wont get a text confirming by 6 pm so will have to go in store to purchase. Tomorrow just isnt going to work, everything sold out. So when O2 gets more stock (whenever that is!) its going to be another bun fight all over again, week after week. Unless O2 puts in a system of getting the replenished stock to pre registered customers that were failed by their crummy ordering system......chances of that is nil. So it looks like its going to be a very long wait for everyone.

This is more good info.

Now I might be being a bit dense here, and I know this has been mentioned *lots* of times here on MR but I cannot find anything official on O2's website to say that 1st Gen iPhone owners can go to O2 tomorrow and upgrade? I wouldn't be happy if I went to mine and queued (Ha!) only for O2 to say no, online only. Whilst the wording has changed on their website, I consider it 'wooly' - it doesn't say you can't but then it doesn't say you can!

Where I would be going there is a CPW opposite so I also don't know if you could upgrade there.

I did email them yesterday but no response so far!

Might have to give them a call I suppose!

I wasn't going to get one initially but the Apps Store has got me all excited for a 16Gb iPhone, my current one is only 8 and I can see it getting full quickly.

Hhmm, "wooly" speak from O2? Never! :D

You could call them, but i doubt they know whats going on, even tomorrow theres going to be O2 workers not knowing said arse from elbow.

Just a quick question. Someone above mentioned a store that was receiving a number of 8gb iphone's and only 2 16gb iphone's that had already been reserved? HOW can they already be reserved? That is against the law if o2 are sticking to their advertised (indeed heavily advertised today) first come first served basis?

There are three stores in newcastle, one in hexam and one n durham and i intend to be a blur on the motor way until i find one that is without a queue!

i actually have no idea WHAT i'm getting tomorrow... i ordered through the o2 store on monday, and on checking they said it was a 'new order' not an upgrade, and suggested i sent it back to them when i got it (right!!!!)..
a few hours of phone calls and apparently a new order can be used as an upgrade because they supply quote 'a pin' that's entered into itunes during activation...

i've also got an email and SMS saying my order is ready to dispatch (16 gig black iphone 3g) and it shows under my orders in my o2 account billing..

so might be interesting tomorrow to see what actually happens in swapping my existing iphone to the new iphone 3g... hassle I could do without tomorrow.. but given the above statement from O2 saying 'little stock' I dont think i'll be sending my black 16 gig back any time soon ;)

I fought like a ninja on Monday to try and order one online and no joy. It was a bloody disaster!! That was until about 20 mins ago!!!!! I got an email saying my phone bill was ready and it was £208! I instantly **** myself... but when I logged in, I saw the words '16Gb iPhone - Black' (dispatched yesterday). :D Looks like I was extremely lucky, they must have processed my 'failure' form or something.

Good luck to everyone for tomorrow.
Hope all the MacRumors guys get in there first ;)

Sadly, your figures are out - because the number of units supplied from Apple to O2/CW, the average number of phones per store is a fair bit lower than 24... and that's before you take into account people that ordered online.

I don't think it's that far out - from O2's own website:

On average, we will only have a few dozen iPhone 3Gs per store (some stores more, some stores less, dependant upon store size so we expect to sell out quickly). Sales of iPhone 3G will be limited to one per customer and two for business customers.

How does that equate to an average of less than 24 per store?

My local CPW store told me that they only have 2 16GB iPhones in stock (admittedly it is a small store). I then phoned an O2 store in town who told me that they couldnt tell me because they still havent received their delivery. I am beginning to think that there is no chance I will get a 16GB tomorrow.

I've just spoken to my nearest O2 store, who have taken delivery of 'about 70' iPhone 3Gs, of which '9 or 10' are 16GB. They also expect stock to be replenished pretty constantly over the coming weeks.

Would that be the Strand store by any chance? ;)

Weekly shipments? Awesome. I was worried about not getting one when I come back at the end of July.

Let's hope that rumour about diverting stock from Rogers to Europe is true.

Just spoke to my local CPW. Apparently I can't get one tomorrow. I can buy an iPhone but then they order it in and it arrives on Saturday. What the hell?

Yeah, cos there's so many spare iPhone 3Gs floating about that they can order a new one and it will arrive a day later!

My advice to you would be to get the hell out of them and into another store where they have better answers.

I just managed to order mine hitch-free by going to the Carphone Warehouse's site and opting to pick it up from the store tomorrow. Although whilst I've had a text for acceptance, I'm still not entirely confident they'll manage to avoid screwing it up somehow!

I really don't trust that CPW wesbtie. Good luck with that but I'm going to try my lucky early tomorrow morning instead.

Not worth getting a ticket or crashing over dude...
Get yourself along to one of the lesser known stores - Team Valley for instance. They open at 8am according to the advisor I spoke to but the website says 9am.

EDIT: Probs reserved for staff...

O2 Ireland

so seems we might be getting slightly lucky over here!!!

after a week of absolutely no information,no online pre ordering, no info on activation i got a cal from my local O2 store!!! i had gone in earlier this week, given them my name and number, told them i wanted an 8gig model and i had an upgrade on my account....today im told that my name is on one iPhone, to be collected any time from 9.30am tomorrow....
