I'm betting on a iPad

Its a PDA. Here are some more things to think about.

1. Report: Apple contracts chips for new mobile multimedia device
http://www.appleinsider.com/article.php?id=982

2. Palm is going to windows mobile and they don't even own the palm OS anymore. What do you think this means for macs and PDA's. Apple has to do a PDA or die and they would never use someone elses OS. Apple could do so much better.

3. Inkwell has been part of OSX sense 10.2

4. Looks like they are going to put the time and resources into something big. Why would they need a 130% increase in office space.
Read:Apple leasing spree targets Cupertino office space

5.I just bought an iPod 40g and it has changed my life. Everyone I show it to is in love with its photo capabilities. "Thats the best use for an iPod I've seen" , has been said many times to me. However it's operating system is limited. Simple and elegant but limited. Why cant I check off a ToDo? I can change my raiting on a song. There are many limitations that don't have to be there. Apple has just crippled them.

6. The iTunes music store has proven its self. Video is the next logical step. They already are delivering it in the form of music videos and we are seeing more and more video pod-casts every day. Apple for sure has the infrastructure in place to do this type of content delivery on a much larger scale next Wednesday.

7. iSync iCal, iPhoto, Quicktime, iTunes and all the other iApps are simple, effective and powerful. There biggest fault is that they are missing a mobile counterpart.

8. We all need a convergence device. I want a all-in-one PDA, camera, phone, music/video player. The tech is here for this today. It seems to me like the next natural step for Apple. It needs to be done. And the first company that does it WELL will reap great rewards.

Secretly (from my wife) I have been putting away $10 here and 10$ there for about 2 years now for just such a device. Now I can't decide wether to buy it first thing next Wednesday... or put it into Apple stock and triple my money.

Don

Of note for new Power Macs

I just went surfing over to the ATI site to check out their new graphics cards that were unveiled today and they are, as advertised, all PCI Express.

What particularly interested me was that on their specs page, while they make no mention of Macs specifically, they do say that the "Complete feature set also supported in Open GL 2.0"

http://www.ati.com/products/RadeonX1800/specs.html

I've worked in and managed coffee shops for over five years now. I can't let it slide. It's "eSpresso" not "eXpresso". :)

Arrghhh!! I've even seen cafes write it on their price signs like this. Bl**dy infuriating. And then there are the people that think Cappuccino is called Expresso.

Not that I'm easily wound up.

Sorry what were we discussing here?? Oh yeah...

I think it stands a chance that Mr Jobs won't be launching right into a "here's the new iPod video" speech at this event next week so perhaps we'll see a few things unveiled before he announces movie/video related items... if they're even really coming.

I've never been desperate to see a video iPod but when I think about it, it would be nice to have an option to watch a film on a train journey. I get loads of time to listen to music but I have a stack of unwatched dvds that just grows. Depends how big the screen is and what the battery life is like but the idea is growing on me.

red curtains

I'd love a PDA--or whatever can give me OS X in my pocket. I don't the market is ready, I just know I am  Don't think it will happen any time soon.

Now this may be a reach, but what do red curtains mean to most people? Twin Peaks, of course. Could there be some White Lodge Edition iPod coming?

Also, although giant movie downloads would get off to a slow start, and may not makes as much sense for iPod as videos would, I coinicidentally just stumbled across Universal's intent to start letting people download movies soon: http://whedonesque.com/comments/8339

But they talk about the timeframe in a way that doesn't make it sound as immediate as next week.

I think that's how Steve introduced the iMac G5 (as raised out of the floor). It's just kind of 'his thing.'

I bet the G5 iPod will have a G5! Just think about it: they said that getting a G5 in a powerbook would be a huge challenge, nothing about an iPod! Sneaky :p
Steve was in the hospital when the iMac G5 came out, Phil Schiller introduced it.
Also, there is no way in hell a PB based on x86 will be coming out this year, NO SOFTWARE people, its not just about the hardware being there, you have to have something there for it to be useful, and there is no OS X ready yet, and there are no pro apps ready, therefore rendering a x86 PB useless.
Just because its a one more thing, as pointed out, doesnt mean things couldnt be released before the one more thing announcement.
I think updated PB and PM's and then the media blitz of the iPod AV, AE2, and the whole tv show deal

Everyone lets all skim that previous thread posted from when Apple released the first iPod. Bet money there is at least one person in there who says something along the line of: I don't need it. I can burn MP3's to my CD player. Who would ever want a MP3 player? This is stupid. Blah blah blah blah blah...
I read through most of those 6 pages and there were quite a few that said exactly that. People's habits tend to change as technology chages. How many people would have said no 50 years ago to having a phone that you can not only carrying around in your pocket, but store hundreds of numbers on, take photos, play movie, play music, store files, transfer to another phone/device without wires and has many other pointless, but nice features. Why would I want to take pictures with my phone? Why do I want to listen to music on the move? Why would I need a friggin light built in?

I'm not saying I am definately right and this will happen, but what I am saying is too many are being to dismissive of new features. Some use the camera connector feature a lot with their iPods, others don't even store photos on theirs when they have colour screens aswell. It's all about the individual and I admit if you could store video on there in the future and take it to someones house, stream wirelessly to their TV and then go home again, that would see a cultural change like we've never seen before. Less and less will want to go the the cinema, when they can download instantly and then share amongst friends.

Who knows? I sure don't, but it's all very exciting watching and experiencing it.

The future...?

Here's one that can tie into the now and the future. For fun, be kind my first post:

The announcement will be an Airport Express with Video Out (adaptor) to tv /w wifi or bluetooth. The one more thing will be a remote control that looks suprisingly like an oversized PDA/Newton.

I agree with those saying that a vPod is not likley because it's going to be a very small niche device. However, if the device is a small screened remote, widescreen 5 to 10 inches, I know that's big, that can connect to your Mac to go through your various iTunes (Music+Video) and iPhoto libraries. This way you don't have to sit at your Mac to change the song, photo to the tv. It'll give everyone a reason to get that flatscreen now.

But here's the kicker, an add on for older modeled iPods, wi-fi or Bluetooth attachment so you can keep your iPod in your pocket or backpack. Enough memory to cache and run the gui on screen.

Other models can have small hd or flash drives, where you can store information, contact, calendar. A high end iPod with very large capacity with no screen+remote can be introduced later. The screen, not the white earbuds will be the sign you have an iPod now.

Eh, just speculation, but if Apple can produce a remote on the cheaps, with Wi-fi and or Bluetooth, there only a few steps away from web/email/pda device. Just dreaming. Oh yeah, priced at $149.99 for remote.

If I may add to the dreaming...

I would love to have something like a universal remote control, given all appliances would evolve (or more fitting: diminish) with it... I imagine future devices to not sport any interface at all. A radio outputs music, a screen shows movie data, speakers play sound. All of these devices are connected to each other via universal data cables or wi-fi. To control devices you use flat-screen tablets which can show a custom interface for every appliance. The mac would, of course, be the digital hub where data could be redirected or processed.

1. I don't think Apple has said quite what you report, although I'd be interested in quotes that prove otherwise. They said Macs will be "in the market" BY June 2006. They did not say when those Macs would ENTER the market. And they said the transition would be largely complete BY June 2007, and that consumer Macs would be among the first. Again, they've given a "latest date" not an "earliest date..."

Actually, Steve said they would begin the transition in 2006.

hmm

It is kind of weird that there is no wait in the US store for a new PowerBook/Mac, which normally (note i didnt say always, but NORMALLY) signifies the coming of an update, but there has been no upgrades to the music video section of the music store for almost TWO MONTHS?!

I thought they might have had full-feature films on iTunes though, but if not, I'd gladly buy a music video for $1.99 or less. THE MUSIC INDUSTRY BETTER NOT GET GREEDY ON THE VIDEOS, AS ITUNES IS THEIR ONLY INCOME PROVIDER FOR THEM!! Honestly, if they inflate the prices to like $4.00, I will rebel against all major record labels. We should start a petition that we will boycott the labels if we see prices go up.

Emulation

Isn't it possible that Tiger could be patched to emulate PPC Software on a Intel Chip? On a Dual Core system it may not kill performance as much as we've experienced emulation in the past...

I thirst for a DDC PowerMac with the New ATI X1800

Maybe I Missed It...

...when it was discussed here, but I noticed it while browsing the PC Connection catalog today.

Anybody else notice that the 2.5GHz Dual G5 machine has quietly been dropped and replaced with a 2.3GHz Dual G5 machine? Price is, I think, the same as the 2.5GHz was, bus speed is dropped from 1.25GHz to 1.15GHz.

Didn't see it mentioned on any of the news sites, or any of the rumor sites.

Anyone know the story behind this? It's rather going against industry practice to do a reverse speed bump.

Maybe they're "pulling the curtains" on the PPC--just a thought--or maybe its one last encore.

You know, I think you just might have guessed the meaning behind the curtains. Also someone said before curtians are used to hide special things or something amazing, like when a magcian does a trick a big TA DA hits and the crowd ooooo's and aaaaaa's in amazement.

Although, the same principle can be used with the video ipod and video airport.

Welcome to the way the world SHOULD be. However, with competition and corporate egos, each company feels its products and interfaces are better than the next. Hence why we have a zillion ways to hook a VCR up to a TV and a zillion differant appliance and menu interfaces. It'll never happen until the US Government decides to take control, but that'll never happen because god forbid "Big Brother" impose regulations on corporate America and us citizens.

Not sure which Apple Store your referring to but 15/17" PBs @ US Apple Store have gone from 24hr ship to 1-2 days. Additionally, make some mods (hard drive, memory) and the ship increases to 2-3 weeks..

I'm sorry to say that a tablet is a completely wonky way to control things. Make no mistake that one of the reasons that TiVo has taken off and the media center PC has lagged is largely due in part to easy to navigate menus and a super easy, highly intuitive remote. If I have to use a stylus on my remote control, I can safely say that from a usability standpoint, that remote control sucks. So I definitely hope the world isn't that way.

There's definitely no way that the mainstream public is going to be separated from their remote controls.

Remember low amount of PM & PB in Europe

Don't forget the info that the stock of PM and PB in low now!
It hab never been so low before!

So... the rumor has something to do with new Macs!!!!!!
