uh.... wow. they say mac users are cult like... but this really sounds like SJ is god. Excuse me: GOD. he and apple are mortal, you know. what we get might not be scraps from the table, but the product of sweat and blood, and sometimes, still not that grand.
Well whatever scraps do fall from his table, there will be thousands, if not millions, lying in wait like dogs to snap those scraps up.

It seems to me that ThinkSecret has a source (or several) who knows something but add their own speculation to this knowledge and ThinkSecret conveys both. However, note the difference in language 'Apple WILL upgrade both...' which was what happened in sense, the iPod mini was 'upgraded' by being replaced and the Shuffle 'upgraded' by adding a new flash-based iPod to the line-up.
They did not claim to know when this would happen it was just 'LIKELY not at its media ...'.

Same for the Powerbook, they simply said 'will LIKELY not ...'.

Watch their language, if they say something WILL happen, it will happen. If they say it will LIKELY happen, somebody is extrapolating information, which as all extrapolation does not have to be true.

Thanks for pointing this out. I agree with you.

I also wanted to say that while Thinksecret is not always dead on the money, they have been the best rumor source for the past several years. Usually when they say something it is right, that doesn't mean every last detail is 100%, but in general they are on the money. If you look at their archives you can see this pretty clearly.

In response to nagromme:

I did some research on the quotes you questioned and you seem to be right that Apple wasn't as specific about the transition as I thought. However, after re-watching parts of the keynote, Steve was very clear that the transition would be a two year transition starting in 2006 and ending in late 2007. He said by WWDC 2006 they would be shipping Intel Macs. This causes me to stick by my thinking that we won't have intel macs in our hands at least until February or March of 2006.

Yah because 20 minutes is the very maximum any of us ever has to spend waiting.
19:38, 19:56, 20:00 but NEVER, NEVER anything above 20 minutes. Which is cool because I can time my bus exactly by that 20 minutes of spare time I have. And if you think college kids don’t watch movies and share movies you are delusional. Take a look at the average kids flash drive and see what’s on it sometime. Finally: price. If $400 was really an issue Apple would have been out of business long ago. Sales have show that people are willing, yes even college kids that get price breaks, to spend a premium on an iPod. And please give up the BS about business card sized screens. You and I both know that if Apple does put out a video iPod its going to be larger then a bloody business card. What next? Going to bitch that a portable DVD display is too small? Or maybe a 17” PowerBook is too small too.

We disagree, but I don't see why the need for you to be a jerk about it. I was generalizing the 20 spare minutes in case that flew over your head. Share movies? Yea, the MPAA would love Apple to set up a device like that. Business card size gripes? Yea, let's look at the rumors because you obviously believe them. They claim to about the SAME SIZE AS THE iPOD WITH A SLIGHTLY LARGER SCREEN AND THINNER THEN THE NANO!! Get your iPod out if you have one, overlay a business card and see what you get! If you believe the rumors, like you obviously do, you can't make up your own specs for them! I'll bitch about your head being too small and your sense of humor being non existent. The 17" is just fine.

About ThinkSecret..

When they something will happen, it does usually happen..

They said, if you go the ThinkSecret website, that the video ipod WILL NOT be released..

Are they positive?

Unless there is some sort of device that can do hardware h264 encoding and decoding, they really can't set up any sort of useful model for movies as they have for music.
SO, it HAS to be either ivideopod and ivideoairport or neither. or the videopod is solely for music videos.

So if the new AirPort base station contained such a chip (H.264 decoder), and an wireless/AV iPod could transmit the compressed video to a TV (an HDTV even) while at the same time allowing the user to use the Click Wheel to control the video playback.... then Apple would have a complete "digital hub" for the living room.

My guess is that the iPod AV will come first, possibly alongside a new "pre-n" AirPort AV. With the battery life of the iPod the way it is, and Apple's statements about not being able to take back new features, adding wireless to the iPod seems a bit far fetched. As for content for the iPod AV, probably anything you take the time to compress with H.264 (imagine having the full quality file for TV playback with a mini "thumbnail" video on top for viewing on the iPod itself) along with the existing library of Quicktime music videos and Movie trailers already sitting within iTunes.

H.264 is an impressive bit of technology that hasn't really been taken advantage of yet.

Contrary to information posted by AppleInsider yesterday, Think Secret now claims that Apple will use the October 12 media event to release newly updated versions of the Power Mac and Powerbook. Think Secret does not provide any speculations to what the upgrades might entail.

Their source claims that Apple is not likely to release a competitor to the new iPod nano this early, for fear of cannibalizing sales of the high-margined nano. The iPod nano was introduced September 7, 2005.

Deep Thoughts
Ok...i'm gonna go out on a limb, throw in my two cents and take a stab at it. I think Steve will say "We had promised you that we would have updates before switching to Intel. Unfortunately I was worng. Today we are announcing that all iBooks, PowerBooks and PowerMacs will begin shipping with Intel processors by the end of the month. In addition we will be dropping prices anywhere from $200-$500 depending on the model."

Come on Apple has been working on this transition for years(WWDC 2005).
Steve even demonstrated Tiger running on an Intel processor.
Imagine how they could cash in on the holiday computer market if they switch to Intel now and lower prices. I'm sure he could apply his RDF and have most software developers exporitng their code by now.

Just a thought.

While I like to see hardware transitions as much as the next guy, the facts don't point to anything like this happening.

The most likely place for the Intel Macs will be on stage at MWSF or WWDC next year. Also, in the WWDC keynote Jobs didn't say they had been working on the transition for a long time, all he said was they had a "Just in Case" scenario worked up with all versions of OS X. However, even OS X is going to have to go under more changes before we see a solid x86 version. Apple is looking to avoid piracy, and in the current state OS X x86 is not ready for that yet.

From the Macworld article

“We said we’d be shipping by next June and we are on track to have that be a true statement”.

“we will have technology in OS X for Intel so that it cannot be installed in other PCs”. He also promised that the final version should not be judged on the basis of the developer versions.

Right...

Thinner than the nano? As in...as thick as a business card? I think not....

No one can be certain. But ThinkSecret has legal wranglings with Apple for leaks. So if Apple wants to confuse they know ThinkSecret will put out the story :(

C'mon. Video iPod is the main stage here.

Oh man I wish this would happen!!! I would love to be able to sit infront of a fire this winter and have a NEW PB Intel laptop sitting on my lap.

I was thinking about the "credit card" sized screen issue. If apple was to end up making an ipod AV thery would have to do something radically different. Now you might loose me here, but untill Apple can figure out a way to make the screen large 5-6" yet keep the whole thing compact I dont think it is a logical prosition.

People are putting too much speculation into this damn curtain nonsense. Maybe they're there because a stage usually has curtains, and Steve Jobs will give the announcement on a stage.
I agree completely despite the earlier nano invitation.

When you unveil something you take the cover off or you open the curtain to reveal what's behind. Anything could be there. A curtain is a *generic* symbol.

I wouldn't read anything more into the whole red curtain thing.

Meh

I personally don't feel the curtains on the invitation signify anything. I mean, isn't this what Steve-Apple is famous for? Little things like this throw you off the trail. It's a theatre..... come on.
As far as a vPod, no. It sounds great but too many factors don't seem "there"; Nothing has been rumored about deals with various studio's, why release a new 'pod with nano *just* showing it's pretty little self, and really.... a 2 gig download just to watch Finding freakin' Nimo? No. Steve (who I find attractive for some reason) knows it doesn't make practical sense.

HD screens, some speed bumps, a few software updates and that's gonna be it.

Man, I certainly hope not. I want one more revision to the 12" powerbook that is a meaningful revision and then I plan to stand pat for 2 to 3 years. Let the Intel stuff sort it self out along with the software. I DO NOT WANT to have to pay to have my photoshop, illustrator, Indesign and other programs 'updated' to work on the new intel processors. Frankly for what I am using my programs for my 3 year old G4 flat screen Imac has been basically fine.

Just like the RIAA when the iPod came out?

Yes, but the MPAA is MUCH MUCH BIGGER. I just don't see them letting a storage video device sharing movies. The other PVP play disks of some sorts don't they? Would this not be the first HD based player that would have a potentially hackable movie file that could be burned and shared? I don't see that happening. Streaming is one thing, a PVP playing QT/AVI/DIVX movies is another.

RE:

My brother works for expeditors (a import/export company) in S.F., and earlier today, they recieved a large shipment of powerbooks. This is different from the regular shipments, as most areas would be locally stocked. But these powerbooks were shipped in mass quantities from overseas, and he was told by someone in the hierarchy that they're "newer powerbooks". I'm gonna try to get him to find out more, but this looks to be a very good sign. I'll be purchasing my powerbook next week :) .

Ah, my bad :) Thinner then the iPod, but not as thin as the nano is what I meant.

I agree. It does sound odd.

I am just saying it happened in the past. Although I do think if a video ipod comes out it won't be justified to play hacked videos. It will be to play home videos, or music videos.

I'm with the iPod Video people this time around. Unless it is a massive release day including everything!

I do think that revised PowerMacs and PowerBooks are on their way during October however. They'll be dual-core 970s and 7448s (up to 1.8GHz) when they come (most likely configuration I guess). I'm certainly not in the Intel in 2005 camp.

It's only a few days though ... too much work to do before then anyway to spend time wondering!

I don’t see at all how this can be for Dual Core G5’s or even new power macs. Outside of us hardcore computer lovers who really cares about what is in their computer? I work in midtown manhattan in nyc, where walking down the street EVERYONE has an ipod. I have gotten stopped numerous times already with questions about my nano. Forget about getting into an elevator with that thing. Now i will buy a Dual Core as soon as they come out and am very excited for them but is the standard person really going to care? My girlfriend is a graphic designer who works on a dual G5 at work and has no clue what Dual Core means. Is the dual core processor going to make headlines in papers and magazines? I hate to say it but apples name right now is the IPod. Those things are so much more than a mp3 player. The nano is the hottest thing I’ve seen come out in god knows how long. That stuff sells to the general public and that is the stuff that is making Jobs move up the fortune ladder. I just don’t see how John and Mary Sue are really going to give a crap about dual core G5’s or new power books to warrant such an event.

one more thing.... lol
Don't you think this event has to be bigger than the nano? i mean considering apple dropped a huge hit why would they come back with something minor or something that could just get thrown under a rug. What are the sales comparisons between Ipods and Power Macs? If i was in the media and i went from a nano to a dual core G5 i think i'd be a little ticked off thinking how i'm going to sell that story. I'm not so positive it is a video store with a vpod but it has to be a bigger thing than that nano was. Jobs is way to smart a man to blow his load early!! =his has all been planned he knew was going to do what he's doing now.

Possibly new Powermacs, Powerbooks and iPods? ........there are new Mac minis that need to be officially released soon too.
