Boy, passing out the casing to the audience sure made things awkward for a while there, as Steve waited for everyone to look at them before continuing the keynote. That was uncomfortable to watch -- the momentum died quick.

I see the cycle goes on:

* Dozens of rumors swirl about a new Apple product, which obviously can't all be true.

* New Apple product appears.

* Tempest in a teapot where "everybody" hates it ("everbody" meaning some fraction of forum-goers, who are themselves a tiny fraction of the public).

* It sells like crazy, is much-loved by users and is widely-copied (unsuccessfully) by other companies.

* Repeat.

Fun :)

Yep, that is pretty much it.

I would like the track pad and the graphics of the Macbook, but would not get one because of no firewire. Thankfully my santa rosa based macbook will do me fine for the time being.

I personally really like the new designs as they unify the whole Apple product line. Unfortunately, I am not in the market for a new computer or else I would be getting a new Macbook Pro!

And as another commenter noted, there really is a cycle for Apple products. Overhyped rumors, product eventually comes out and everyone hates it, but when it is actually released people love it and the complaining dies down. Now all I wonder is when the 17" will come out in the new case design.

This new unibody construction is something to crow about, and so Apple did. The new trackpad and dual graphics chips are also unique features. No other laptop in the world has these features.
The construction method may be a good thing, possibly even revolutionary in case manufacturing circles, but what does it do for us consumers that I need to watch a special event for? It looks the same. Is it dramatically lighter and stronger (I still have yet to snap a PowerBook or MBP case)? Does it smell better? I know I'm sounding glib when I say "Who cares?", it's interesting to me reading a paragraph about, and I'm sure I'll end up buying one at some point, but what's so amazing about it for the world?

New trackpad and new graphics chips, well yes OK, those are fine things, but again, why the special event? In the past they would just send out a press release for stuff like that.

To each his own, I guess. If people were excited by this then maybe I'm just getting old. I used to be excited by Apple events, now they mostly bore me with a few exceptions.

the keynote was decent. the video at the end was neat. i really wish apple would make it simple enough to just have 1 product that you can customize from instead of having 2 or three models to customize from. they should practice the mac pro pricing model with all their computers. one base price then CTO from there.

Seemed an abrupt end, it just kind of stopped at the end of that video at 53m? Was expecting the Q&A session etc... maybe the questions were a bit too awkward to broadcast :)

Boy, passing out the casing to the audience sure made things awkward for a while there, as Steve waited for everyone to look at them before continuing the keynote. That was uncomfortable to watch -- the momentum died quick.

That was kind of funny, when he was asking them to hurry up and then looking impatient when he tried to regain their attention. I was half expecting him to go all Teacher on them ... "You! At the back! Pay attention!" *waits* "SETTLE down everybody! Your ATTENTION please!" :D

my one real problem is price.

I am a school teacher. The new macbooks start at $1250. (the store says macbooks start at $950, but that is for the old macbook).

I guess I will have to keep my first gen. macbook pro. Which because of the crappy build quality is falling apart rather quickly.

I am so bloody annoyed at Apple, the most annoyed I have been for a very long time at a particular company, save Microsoft.

Its not because of the glossy screens, or the keyboard or the lack of firewire on the MB. I'm not too fussed about any of that.

Its the fact that Apple has once again screwed its Australian market over something big. Although I can't speak to the UK market, I understand its much the same there.

When I bought my MBP (one previous to the just released ones) in May, it was retailing in Australia for $2700 AUD, which roughly equated to, conservatively, $2500 US. Meanwhile it retailed for $2000 US Stateside. You cannot tell me it costs $500 US to ship each computer!

Now lets look at these new ones. In the US the new MBPs have followed the same price points as the old ones - $1999 US and $2499 US. Meanwhile, the Australian prices have jumped from $2699 to $3199 AUD, and from $3399 to $3999 AUD. What the hell, Apple?!?!

They've even done a number on the old, continuing laptops. The entry level plastic MB went down from $1099 US to $999 US in the States. Meanwhile, it has gone UP in Australia from $1599 AUD to $1649 AUD. The MBP 17" has gone up from $3799 AUD to a whopping $4499 AUD.

Even with the Australian dollar being at a 20-year low at the moment, the currency conversion still comes up short. And besides, this sort of thing has been going on for ages, which means that Apple makes an absolute killing everytime it sells something in Australia - because Australians pay more for Apple gear than Americans.

I'm sick of paying more. I'm sure my UK friends are sick of it too. Apple are by no means alone in this, Adobe put on a bit of a number at times with International pricing, but they are the biggest culprits.

So, stop it Jobs! Stop punishing us because we're Australians! I understand you don't want to visit, because you don't like plane trips, but at least make it easier for your products to sell here! (I work in an Apple reseller myself).

I have no problem with the updates, nice and all, but once again I have to ask, is this really worth the special event and sending out invitations to reporters and all? I really think Apple is "crying 'wolf!'" when they keep doing these stunts where nothing all that dramatic is announced. For the iPhone, sure. Nanobatteries with solar and kinetic recharging? Yes. 16-processor Mac Pro with holographic display? Sure. Maybe even just for Blu-Ray if you want to stretch it. But not this, there is nothing revolutionary or even close to it here.

Well they put so much effort into there mobile products (a.k.a iPhone, Touch, and iPod line) the past few year that I can understand why they make a special event for the laptops. As far I know the people on Mac Rumors have been waiting for new Macs a while.

17"!? How infuriating! Does anyone have a clue (from previous experience i guess) how long it might take for the 17" to come out? Also is it likely to have any higher specs than the 15"... maybe quad core if it could take the heat better!? I can't decide whether to get a 15" now or wait!

How bad is it that on the DAY of an update, people are already pondering over the classic "to wait or not to wait?"!

I need help

i need help i don't know what to do i like the new macbook but i like the old ones more well for design but should i buy the new one are they definitely worth it?

does anyone think that these would look smokin with a palmrest black cover ???:cool:

Don't complain too much - right now iMacs are actually cheaper in Australia and New Zealand than in the US (e.g. type "1599 aud in usd" into Google).

Pardon my insolence, but who said that you needed to watch anything?

Obviously I don't, Mr. Snarky Responder, but this is a discussion forum and I'm free to voice my opinions. As are you.

I question your logic on how a keynote that nobody asked you to watch, and you still watched, can make you mad that it existed... Does not seem like something that makes sense to me, you know, your Snarky Responder.

Edit: Although, maybe you did not watch it, but somehow assume somebody thinks you should, which makes me think, why's that?

NO Firewire on MacBook and MacBook Air, NO PURCHASE!

That's my problem too I'm afraid. I just can't do my work without firewire and the 15" is just oo big/ heavy. When will we get a proper replacement for the 12" powerbook???

This is just not fair. What should I do?

Should I wait until the 17 inch version comes out most likely Q1 of next year or grab the 15 inch right now?
