No matte display options, no FW400 on MB, only FW800 on MBP? What laptop does Apple want me to buy next? A Lenovo?

Those things are really deal-breakers for many of us. And those prices.. not bad but not great either. $1299 for a new entry-level MB is too much, though.

When will we get a proper replacement for the 12" powerbook???
I'm with you. I guess I will be buying a fresh battery and a bigger HDD for my PB12" soon, as I don't anticipate getting a new Apple laptop until their next revision.

A 50 bucks educational discount? Hmm going backwards with the discounts...interesting pricing model. I guess I should of bought the old white macbook yesterday with the $100 discount. Makes no sense. Like the updates but prices did go the wrong way for me. Going to hold on to my money a bit longer and see what comes out of all these especially given we are on the verge of recession/depression. Hopefully some users will post there reviews in the on coming weeks. I personally like the new designs though except the lack of the FW but they look nice overall.

send them feedback!!!

People,

I'm new, long time mac user, but have been reading for awhile. If you really want to see your complaints go to good use, and want do see change, then go here (someone else already suggested, but nothing really was done):

http://www.apple.com/feedback/macbook.html

Make an official complaint, and I can promise you that if enough of us do it, apple will listen - and HOPEFULLY change prices and problems!

Please please please do it! Complain about whatever you want - just make sure you include the crappy prices and the "NEw" EDUCATIONAL dsicount!!!

Thanks!

Prices

Prices for the new macbooks and new macbook pros are way too high. Honestly, there does not appear to be too many new features. This is the second consecutive Apple event in which they failed miserably. Unfortunately, I have become a slave to Apple, and I will therefore most likely buy one anyway, but I am really not happy at all.

FW800 port on the macbook is backward compatible with an adaptor.

This is from the spec page:
One FireWire 800 port (up to 800 Mbps)

I question your logic on how a keynote that nobody asked you to watch, and you still watched, can make you mad that it existed... Does not seem like something that makes sense to me, you know, your Snarky Responder.
As it turns out, I happen to work with one of the reporters (and another media person) who was summoned/invited to the event. So that takes two people out of our office for a day. However, I'm not really so concerned with that, and I'm not actually "mad", as you put it. I just question Apple's sense of making these special events for updates of dubious significance. Certainly, they are free to do that. But I know our reporter is coming back a little underwhelmed with these recent events, and I feel the same way as an observer (and I used to stay up late poring over rumors and get up early to watch these).

But hey, like I said, maybe it's just me. If there are lots of people excited by it and rushing out to the Apple Store to line up to buy, then I guess I'm on the wrong side of the issue.

Love the new updates, hated the event

I loved the new mb & mbp updates, but to be honest the Special Event was really dry and boring. Like I've said before, Steve Jobs is losing his touch :(. I also hate how they start it off with facts about their products.
Could of been better.

The only way that this would work is if people stop buying macbooks and MBP's. Personally I think that they are going to sell in huge quantities and apple wont care about people complaining if they are selling huge numbers.

Yeah, I know. But it's a step backwards from having two FW ports. Furthermore, should I purchase an MBP, I would also need to buy THREE adapters: FW800 to FW400, DP to DVI, and DP to VGA. I would really need them all and that would set me back 90€ here. Seriously guys, these machines do not honor that old motto "Mac, it just works" for me any longer.

When you put it that way (i.e. no "need" to watch it as an average consumer) I'm with you. The media presence is, well, a bit over the top, yes. I'm just saying: The average consumer should not and probably will not watch the keynote. That's just a way to stir hype. Maybe not so efficient this time around. I'm still impressed with the whole manufacturing process, though.

So I'm lounging on my sofa with my white macbook, only 6 months old.
I watched the keynote, browsed the Apple site, looked at the prices.
I'm glad, my MacBook might not have the tasty graphics chip. Or the bright new screen.
But I'm smug, its my macbook, its sexier than the new ones. Its thin, with chunky corners. It does everything I could want it to.

I think these new notebooks will sell well, but they haven't tugged on my heart strings. Hopefully if the iMacs get a refresh they won't be as bad as the new notebooks.

But for the time being, I'll just finish every night with plugging in my external HD (via FireWire) ^^

I dunno. There have been dull and uninspiring keynotes before. I guess it's more like everybody expects too much from them nowadays. No wonder there's disappointment.

Haha... I like that... VERY true :D

I'm not one of those who waits for Rev.B any more. Most of what they release is new "Rev.A"s anyway, and for the majority they seem to be reliable.

I'm sick of paying more. I'm sure my UK friends are sick of it too. Apple are by no means alone in this, Adobe put on a bit of a number at times with International pricing, but they are the biggest culprits.

UK here.. oh I'm sick of paying more, but ALL of the USA sellers do it.

To be fair to Apple, they're not quite as bad as many other tech and even software manufacturers. I've seen many, many cases where other manufacturers simply use £1=$1, even during the times when the exchange rate was about 1:2. *That* is greed. Apple currently seem to be using about 1:1.3 to 1:1.4, which despite the weakening of the pound has not really changed from last year.

Not sure how it works in Oz, but the primary culprit here in the UK is our government. They get the seller to charge us a mandatory 17.5% Value Added Tax as well as the Import Duty (more tax!) which they charge to Apple. That's where most of the difference goes from the exchange rate, in addition to shipping costs etc.

Yep, I hear you. Hardware is not the only reason for buying a mac. Love the OS.

new MBP

I don't appreciate the whole $99 cheesy video adapter that I'll have to get to hook up my 30" monitor to my computer. I wonder if I can buy it from someone else for probably less than half the cost? I tried searching but didn't see anything.

Also very important- how hot (temperature) new macbooks?

Well, with all that aluminum casing I don't think you'll feel anything getting hot. Could it be that one of the reasons for switching to aluminum casing is to solve their heat problems
