The song at the start is 'Life in Technicolor' by Coldplay, from their latest CD. The last one is a bit of U2's 'City of Blinding Lights' from their last CD.

Actually the song at the end of the macbook video is by U2 called city of blinding lights

Is it just me who noticed there seemed to be little if any crowd reaction as Jobs went thru all new products. Perhaps because this was more of media thing as opposed to MacWorld which is attended by mostly established users/developers.

Suddenly, my existing macbook looks pretty darn good to me. I like the new ones and all, especially the multitouch. But given the price, I'll stick where I am for a while....

Looks like I may look into one of those add on docks from bookends. since a dock did not come out today.

Here's hoping for my tablet at macworld.....

That's correct. It's really bad form for the media to go fanboy for new products where they're supposed to be acting as journalists.

Rip off Britain

In the US the new base MB is $1,299.00

Going by current exchange rates that = £750

Yet its in the Apple store for £950  I know the UK is usually more expensive by £50-100 but not £200!!!!

It appears the mini displayport carries audio to? since the new ACD has speakers.
I wonder if you can pass through HDMI audio and video.

It's the collaboration of Apple and the UK's government to ruin us all. :)

Media events are usually lack-luster as compared to macworld. plus, I bet the media was like, "ok just get to the new products already."

Like someone pointed out earlier - funny how the vp of marketing was wearing a blackberry and not an iphone. What does that say when even their own people uses, the competition?

As for the battering indicator? what is wrong with the on-screen display?

I am so bloody annoyed at Apple, the most annoyed I have been for a very long time at a particular company, save Microsoft.

Its not because of the glossy screens, or the keyboard or the lack of firewire on the MB. I'm not too fussed about any of that.

Its the fact that Apple has once again screwed its Australian market over something big. Although I can't speak to the UK market, I understand its much the same there.

When I bought my MBP (one previous to the just released ones) in May, it was retailing in Australia for $2700 AUD, which roughly equated to, conservatively, $2500 US. Meanwhile it retailed for $2000 US Stateside. You cannot tell me it costs $500 US to ship each computer!

Now lets look at these new ones. In the US the new MBPs have followed the same price points as the old ones - $1999 US and $2499 US. Meanwhile, the Australian prices have jumped from $2699 to $3199 AUD, and from $3399 to $3999 AUD. What the hell, Apple?!?!

They've even done a number on the old, continuing laptops. The entry level plastic MB went down from $1099 US to $999 US in the States. Meanwhile, it has gone UP in Australia from $1599 AUD to $1649 AUD. The MBP 17" has gone up from $3799 AUD to a whopping $4499 AUD.

Even with the Australian dollar being at a 20-year low at the moment, the currency conversion still comes up short. And besides, this sort of thing has been going on for ages, which means that Apple makes an absolute killing everytime it sells something in Australia - because Australians pay more for Apple gear than Americans.

I'm sick of paying more. I'm sure my UK friends are sick of it too. Apple are by no means alone in this, Adobe put on a bit of a number at times with International pricing, but they are the biggest culprits.

So, stop it Jobs! Stop punishing us because we're Australians! I understand you don't want to visit, because you don't like plane trips, but at least make it easier for your products to sell here! (I work in an Apple reseller myself).

and this is why I make money selling in australia

I think you'll find those prices are quite close. UK prices include tax whereas US prices don't include tax until after you make the purchase, then consider the length of warranty you get in the US is less than what you get in the UK.

I think the sales tax for example in California is 7.25% (which also varies from state to state), do the math and that adds $96 to the price, convert that into £££ and you get at a guess £50 in tax. Now the difference is about £150. I think that difference is justified because our warranty periods in the UK are longer than what they are in the US. 90 days vs 365 days, that is actual hardware support, not the telephone support. Correct me if I am wrong on any of this please.

Can somebody please explain how Apple can possibly put the Australian Price of a MacBook (2.1Ghz, White) UP by $150 whilst everywhere else is getting the same amount OFF??

These laptops are overpriced and under-featured. A $2000 (Australian, so about $1400 US) laptop without firewire, with a 160GB HDD etc.

Apple has lost their minds. I'm expecting the extremely slow response by customers (due to the fact that they feel used and cheated) will result in a significant price cut by Christmas... Which is good - I LOVE THESE LAPTOPS, but not the premium price I am expected to pay for it...
You have to pay a premium for living in Australia. ;) At least we have better weather. Everything here is more expensive, it's a small country.

Problem with keynote viewing?

I'm getting a "page not found" error after I click on the link on the apple site to view the keynote. I tried from within quicktime as well. Anyone else having this problem?

How about the Keynote? That video only shows the internal video they made about the manufacturing process of the MacBook.

It's not available for download yet. They just posted it to iTunes.
If you have iTunes installed you can download it.

As it turns out, I happen to work with one of the reporters (and another media person) who was summoned/invited to the event. So that takes two people out of our office for a day. However, I'm not really so concerned with that, and I'm not actually "mad", as you put it. I just question Apple's sense of making these special events for updates of dubious significance. Certainly, they are free to do that. But I know our reporter is coming back a little underwhelmed with these recent events, and I feel the same way as an observer (and I used to stay up late poring over rumors and get up early to watch these).

But hey, like I said, maybe it's just me. If there are lots of people excited by it and rushing out to the Apple Store to line up to buy, then I guess I'm on the wrong side of the issue.

If you want to be "overwhelmed" on the day of the event, stay away from the Apple rumor sites. They kind of ruin the surprise don't you think!!

NO! they were disappointed like every else. HORRIBLE
apple likes to over hype and disappoint.

I take your point, but I doubt I'd be overwhelmed with this event in any case (or any event that amounts to incremental updates/refreshes instead of more groundbreaking, revolutionary new products and software). But while I think people can rightfully argue about price, dropping Firewire and matte screen options, the changes are all good for the most part. It's just more "Meh." than "Wow!" for me.
