All I can say is that here in the UK it wasn't necessary. My iMac's serial number came up as approved straight away. But then I did buy directly from Apple, so their system has the purchased date.
Same here. Im a new Mac user, so I think I might go as far as waiting until January to install Leopard. I ordered a 4gb RAM kit this week and was going to wait until I installed it to put Leopard on, but with me just now getting familar with Tiger, and all the bugs out with os X, Im staying put for a while.

So it says that it's an "Upgrade" disc, will it work as a fresh install or do I always have to install 10.4 before installing 10.5?

The apple web site vacillates between saying mine will be delivered by the 30th or the 29th (today). Our mail gets here really late--at 4:30 or so, so I'm crossing my fingers....

Exact same here and nothing delivered yet.
Mine was (actually IS STILL!!) doing the exact same thing and it DID come today, so the Oct. 29 was correct! But everytime I hit "refresh" it would change!

Mine didn't come in the mail today either. So I'm assuming it should get here tomorrow . . . which sucks because I have TODAY off, not tomorrow. I really wanted to spend tonight getting everything set up when I had more time. Oh well.
