well, a pleasant but unexpected vacation has basically ruined my august running. That's what tends to happen when I'm not training for anything in particular...

Ah well... at least it was a good reason. ;)

Now I have comfortable shoes again (I'm keeping my fingers crossed for another few runs though) and my gym instructor has gone off for a couple of weeks leaving us with a very average replacement, I'm hoping to get a good few weeks in so that I'm able to do the half marathon in October. At the moment, I'm still 5 or 6 miles off it.

glad you like the shoes. i'm sure you'll be fine for the half

So what is going on? Seems like many folks bailed out on the challenges.

Yeah, I'm one of them. So I wanted to stop by, say hi, and apologize. It's not that I lost interest so much that I got so focused on my speed training and some other issues made me decide to cut my training to four days a week. So I'm running 3x5k's and 1x10k per week, coming out to just over 15 miles, and I'm resting the other days.

On the bright personal side, my 5k is down now to 23:24 or something like that -- I set that record yesterday, and I was actually quite astonished to note that I'm consistently running 5k under 24 minutes now, which is a first ever for me. 10k is hovering around 48:12 or something like that, so I'm hoping to smash through into the 47s at the Human Race.

But I do miss the competitions and I'm sorry I haven't been a part of them.

P.S. I get Human Race bib on Saturday. The t-shirts are technical -- I really hope they actually have them in sizes that fit and they're not all XL. Good luck to all the runners who'll be doing it! :)

well, i'm glad to hear that you are still running and are running well. but i must say, that type of training will not get you where you want to be (unless you are happy with those times). good luck

You could still stay in the 25K one though... no? Those 15 miles a week all add up!

I picked mine up last week and it's surprisingly OK. Dri-Fit material although a tad bright. It's going to look v odd with 30,000 identical (more or less) T's running since you HAVE to wear it as it has your unique number on it. The women's ones came in S to XL so I'm guessing the men's ones should too. They'll give you your T and then they code the number on it in against your entry in their systems.

Where are you running it? Are there any other MR bods doing it in London?

Now comes the problem - I did two 30 minute sessions on the treadmill (I usually run outdoors for an hour so shouldn't have been a biggie) and all was OK. Then I ran for 35 minutes outside and about 25 minutes in, my left hip started to ache. I came home, stretched and took off my shoes. The next day, my hip still ached - outside of hip a couple of inches below the joint itself. I figured that perhaps my shoes were now correcting something that wasn't corrected before so should keep trying.

Any advice?

What type of surface are you running on, some people find that the camber on the road affects them. Most large roads have approx. 5 degree camber on them. Shouldn't normally make much difference, unless of course you have one leg longer than the other (more common than you may think!).

Meaning... ? I'm not completely happy with those times, but they're also faster than I've ever run in my life by a significant margin (and have been improving at a fairly rapid clip over the past two or three months -- I was running 5k in 27 minutes not all that long ago), which is saying something, considering I'm 33 now.... My long term goals are to get back to marathoning and improve my time there, and to do a tri some day, but mostly I'm actually having a lot of fun running the way I'm running right now, and I feel good. I might not get to be as fast as you, but I'm pretty certain I'm improving.

Thanks for the info, 'Spider! :) I'm running in Chicago in the US. :)

like i said before, i'm glad to hear that you are running well. you have found a training schedule that you like, and that works for you.

but to train for any event/race, you have to run farther than that distance to work on your endurance, and do shorter and faster intervals to work on speed, if it's time that you are after. so for 5k, you need longer runs somewhere. and you also need shorter and faster intervals.

but i understand that you are 33, and making yourself do those things can be tough (i'm learning that now myself). so i say do what is 'fun' to you, but just keep those things in mind

It does have some camber - it's a carriageway through a park but I've run around it many times without problems. And my new new Adidas ones don't share the problem so I guess it was the shoe. The next person I spoke to in the running store said that the Adidas has a different heel/midsole construction which might just suit my feet better.

well i actually ran 3 mile repeats with my brother and his friend on his high school xc team. wasn't terrible, but i'm in the same shape i was in

meaning, not the shape you want to be in? Don't worry, I'm sure you'll get back there if you really commit to it.

well, i think we hit 6:03, 6:04, and 6:21 (i could have hit another low 6, but the guy i was running with was slowing down). so it wasn't that bad.

yeah, i know. but i'm not sure if i want to commit to it.....yet. but i do want to run more than i have been.

Yuck. Nike have just sent the route map for the 10k - what a soul-destroying run this is going to be.

Take a look at the aerial photo of Wembley stadium. The route basically goes along between the industrial estates and warehouses and loops around them.

At least the half marathon I'm scheduled to do has amazing scenery through central London.

WOW, I don't think they could have done worse if they tried!

I want to run in the nike 10k race here in NY buts it costs $35, why in the world do i have to pay them to run ridiculous guess i am running the 10k by myself around my house:(. I really want to run in an event like this but they all seem to cost money which i am not going to pay to run when i can do it anywhere.

Well, they cost money to organise, police, close down roads, hire venues, staff and first aid crews, pay for T-shirts/medals/prizes, time everyone and set up the website to show those times/splits and give an obligatory donation to some charity or other so it's bound to be more expensive than pulling on your shoes and running round the park. But, the idea is that it should also be more fun than just running on your own.

$35 isn't too bad. It was £30 in the UK! The T-shirt is better than I thought it might be though.

Agreed... It's in keeping with the cost of 10k's here in the US, generally, and the perks are much better -- a better shirt, other goodies, an A-list concert. Many of the entertainers for the US events would get much more than $35 just for the concert -- Kanye certainly would... I would think Fall Out Boy also (I haven't heard anything about who is singing in NYC?). And y'all get that old fart Moby. :D (which should be really, really good, seriously :) ).

My shirt is quite satisfactory also, although the Men's size S is a little on the big side for me....

But i am a poor college student :( o well i dont like the American rejects anyway i guess i will have to wait for another event.

basically all races cost money. they are not cheap to put on.

I like to think nike makes enough money selling shoes for a $100 that they pay a $5 to make :p, i realize they cost money now I always thought they were free to be honest till i tried to join the nyc marathon earlier this year. I wouldnt have been able to run that far anyway 26miles is still to much i guess i will save my money for a challenge i can complete like a half marathon i can do that if i push myself not to metion the thought of wasting money will probably push me to finish :D. Keep running guys i think we might hit 25k miles this year if we push it

i'm sorry to hear that. you still doing it though?

Of course :D

It was dry throughout the warm-up bands (yes, the old fart Moby was pretty good) and just as we were about to set off, the heavens opened and it started hosing it down - which of course made it darker too. So by the time we were 3km in, we were very wet (despite the dryfit shirts) and I'm pretty sure I was squelching since in the dusk, it was kinda hard to avoid the puddles!

Still, I got round in 58:48 according to my iPod and 59:19 according to the Nike timing chip. I'm guessing the difference is the congestion at the start and which point we actually started running! The iPod added on .7km so at least I now know how far out it is calibration wise!

A little disappointed at the end though - no goodie bags which I'd have expected at such a big event. Just another T-shirt (long-sleeved) which says 'The day I raced the world' which I guess was possibly more useful than a medal since it meant we had something dry to put on!

Congratulations on the excellent run, 'Spider! :D The rain kind of stinks, though.

We had wonderful weather for the race. We were just a hair under 14,000 people, I think, and supposedly beat Austin out by a very small margin to possibly be the biggest site of the event, at least in NA. Dunno about that part for sure, whether they were just saying that to get us pumped. :p (I admit, I'd do it. )

My gate time was just over 46 minutes, so I'm itching to see if I actually might have slipped under into the 45's once the start time is subtracted (if the finish gate clock works like they usually do). Either way, I was around 2-2.5 minutes faster than my fastest training 10k, so I'm very pleased. :)

Also I had complained somewhat that we got Fall Out Boy and LA got Yeezie, but actually Fall Out Boy was really quite amazing. Lots of fun, and they played all the (small handful) of their songs that I know. :)
