Yes, you should be able to hang on for the last 2 miles on race day, and I don't think you have to try to do the race distances or longer prior to then. I actually wouldn't suggest doing 11m each of the next three weekends.

I don't have time to get race distance pre-race thanks to all the shoe issues in August. I'm planning on doing the 11 miles again this weekend and next and then will take it down to 8 or so the week before.

I'm planning on cutting out my second Pump class of the week on race-week and just doing a 45 minute or so run that day instead at a nice slow pace so my legs don't stagnate.

The 11 miles haven't had any ill effects - I just find the final mile home (uphill) a little tough. Then again, by that stage, I've been running for about 1:45 with only half a litre of water to refuel. Some people have suggested taking some jelly babies or a sports drink after an hour or so mark. Thought I might give that a go today to see if it helps with the 11th mile fatigue

I find that a package of energy gel (or something similar) in the last few miles of a long run makes a big difference, so hopefully it will work for you.

Am heading up to a running store during the next week (to take advantage of a £25 off shoes coupon I have) so might pick up some proper gel things there. Have bought a giant bag of jelly beans and will take a handful on my long run which I've decided to get up and do tomorrow morning at the same time as I should be doing the real thing in three weeks time.

Try eating a carb with alot of fiber before your run the carbs will give you an energy boost and the fiber will make it so you dont have an energy crash as it is ingested slowly by your body

wow very impressive any reason for why your doing all this running or is it just because. The weather here is getting great for running i love the fall.

thanks. yes i love the fall as well. no reason really. i took a lot of time off, so i want to get back into it. of course, not all of that was running, some was walking.

i run because im at the XC team at my school and i need to get better but i love the beginning of fall but not the end its too cold lol.

that's good that you're on the XC team. i'm still friends with some of the runners that were on my high school team. just keep at it, and you'll get better with time. if you need any advice, feel free to ask.

yeah, i bet it gets cold there. here in the South, it doesn't get that cold

Walking included still very good, I wanted to get a nice run in today but its a little hot for my taste so ill just go for my normal run later tonight its supposed to cool down this week so hopefully i be able to throw in a 6mile run sometime soon.

that's good. it's already cooling off here (GA).

well, everyone kinda sprints at the start of the race to get into good position, and then you sprint at the end of the race, about the last 200 meters or so (it's different with everyone). of course, the race is usually won and lost during the rest of the race. the key is to hold the fastest pace possible, without dying before the end of the race.

hope that helps

i never sprint in the beginning lol maybe i should tomorrow (its my 2nd XC meet) i hope i do better. but at the end i always hve soo much left in my legs so i think i should either run faster during the middle or run faster for a longer distance at the end.

btw tomorrow is garret mountain which is supposed to be terrible so i think im going to die.

Nothing like positive thinking  Sure you'll do great!

I didn't get out for my long run this weekend since I managed to tweak a muscle in my back on Saturday afternoon and figured resting it was probably a better idea than going out running and potentially making it worse. Annoyed though! :(

Any of you guys ride bikes the bike i am currently riding is old and falling apart so i need to get a new one would like to stay in the price range of $300

well, you shouldn't sprint too much at the beginning. but i think you should focus on running a faster pace during the whole race, compared to having a better sprint at the end.

and yes, think positive! can't never could

I'm sorry to hear that you hurt your back. hope you're back soon! (pun intended)

mountain bike or road bike? i hate riding bikes though (did an 80-mile ride on a mountain bike, and haven't rode since)

oh ok. yeah, stick with road bikes. much easier for longer rides

congrats on the run! i hope you did a warm up and cool down though.

i think the only way to join at this point is for ziwi to send you an invite. i'm sure he will soon

So, I got robbed yesterday.

I ran my first 5k since 2002, and even with my stop to retir my shoelace everything was going peachy (except for the brutal hill that I had to climb twice). Then, I got to the end. For some reason they started us about 100 meters in front of the calculated start line. Even worse, my sensor decided that I had only completed 4.7k. I wasn't really paying attention to the voiceover, so I didn't think about the fact that my workout wasn't "complete," so running another couple hundred meters couldn't happen.

I'm not happy on so many levels.

i'm sorry to hear that. that's the problem with the system. for it to be accurate, you would have had to calibrate your sensor to your racing pace. believe me, i've went thru the same thing. i was trying to run a 4:44 mile with the thing (not in a race, just at the track with my brother), and since it wasn't calibrated to my pace, it said that i was at the halfway point after 3 laps! i ended up running like 4:56 because i kept messing with the thing while i was running

Sorry to hear that... but join the club. ;) As we've been saying on this board for over a year now, the nike+ is not accurate enough for serious training, and certainly not for setting PRs. It's a fun training tool, but the accuracy is nowhere near where it would have to be to use for races or interval workouts. That's why I've stopped joining all of the timed (fastest 5k, etc.) challenges.

you are correct. (as we've already discussed this). i still join the timed challenges though, just for the heck of it

Ok well on monday i ran garrett mtn and pr ed by 1 minute 35 and i got 23:24 , so for the first 1.5 miles i paced myself with another runner that I never met so I didnt know if he could beat me or not (he did but thats not hte point) but the the last 1/2 to 3/4 of the race was all uphill and it was terrible but I ran hard and I felt good.
