possibly a little off topic...but not too much

hey guys and gals,
I'm still trying to scratch up enough cash to buy the 20" intel iMac. My question is, is there a good reason to upgrade to 256mb vram? i'm trying to save time/money. my local apple store is tax free but doesn't have any 256mb "ultimate" versions of the iMac on sale and doesn't know when they will. this means i will have to either wait an indefinite amount of time, or order through apple.com and get charged sales tax/wait for a couple of weeks for it to arrive (5-7 bus days before it ships with 256 vram). Just so you know my computing habits: Mostly typical lightweight things (ie word processing/web browsing) and some movie editing in iMovie from time to time. I do game a decent amount on my PC and would like to on the mac instead so i can finally drop my PC on some unenlightened individual. So for those of you with the new imacs, does the extra 128mb vram make enough of a difference for me to go through this hassle? Sorry for the long post, thanks for the info!

Not off topic at all

I went for the 256GB video because I'm gun shy from watching my characters freeze in the middle of a battle and I'm able to do anything to move them out of harm's way while they're being pummeled. I have/had the Radeon 8500 on my G4 Power Mac w/ 64MB memory so this will be a step up. Probably not needed from I'm reading from other posts/sites.

My order - to be shipped Feb 28, 2006

I just ordered it!!

The 1.67 GHz MacBook pro - I'm getting a modem for it (to use in Europe where dial up seems to be the norm) and I added another 512 Dimm to it.

What sold me on it is the built in Isight - when my kids are away I will be able to see and talk to them real time with no long distance charges and plus, I will be able to run WOW on it too!

I debated getting a refurbished 17 inch G4 but... decided to get the new one.

:D

I just got an iBook in December, my first Mac, but I love it so far, and I am already infatuated with the iMac. Some of the profs at my University have them, and it would just go so well with my iBook! Haha, well, maybe someday when I'm not such a poor college student! Hope you guys enjoy them, I'm enjoying my iBook! :)

Well my baby arrived! It's everything I hoped for. Will take some getting used to the 20" screen though!:)

Here's hoping they'll get a patch out soon for the front row/graphics intensive tearing problems on the 256mb video card.

Overall I'm a very happy camper today.

what kinds of problems have been reported/are they also present with the 128mb video? also, is there much of a reason to get the 256mb vram or will it not make that much of a difference?

Mine's out for delivery right now in the SF Bay Area....Finally!:)

SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, CA, US
02/06/2006 7:55 A.M. OUT FOR DELIVERY
02/06/2006 6:00 A.M. ARRIVAL SCAN

And I also did leave Apple Support a short email letting them know the recent devliery problems with our iMacs. I'm assuming they would care since it does ultimately affect customer satisfaction, even if the shipping is handled by a different company.

On Front Row and some other applications, 20" iMac owners with 256mb vram have reported seeing horizontal lines (ie. tearing) appear.

http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=350251

The problem seems like it's SW related since owners with earlier OSX builds and the same HW configuration do not have this problem.

i ordered mine from amazon with $3.99 overnight shipping...and it just shipped so i should be getting it tomorrow. hope UPS "delivers"...

Mines is now in Long Beach.... Hope yours is aswell..... :D

I got mine, it's awesome! I don't have any tearing issues with frontrow, everything works just fine. Haven't installed my Adobe apps yet (eep) but everything else is going at a great speed!:D

Dual Core and Video Issues

20" iMac owners with 256mb vram have reported seeing horizontal lines (ie. tearing) appear.

First of all, I always thought this was a 'feature' because it lets you know where you are in a long line of text, especially when you are quickly scrolling through a long line of online text.
General impressions of my 20 " iMac Dual Core witrh the 256 Vid card and 2 megs of RAM...this thing is WICKED fast! Love the real estate and the general speed with which everything I use on a daily basis opens and works. Seems new Universal Apps are added each day, so I am not particularly worried about Rosetta, which, by the way, seems to do an amazing job with non-native apps.
Just wanted to give a quick first impression to everyone.

Great!
I feel like I'm gonna miss you all!

I installed Creative Suite on my iMac (see sig) - this baby is totally loaded, and (at least compared to my old powerbook, see sig) this thing is smokin'! I have a top of the line iMac and had a top of the line PowerBook and the iMac is ripping through Photoshop! I was expecting it to c-r-a-w-l but it's been amazing...I ran the photoshop radial blur test (see other hardware forum) at 49.02 seconds  - which is close to some dual G5 setups...my powerbook ran the test at 1:49:00. I'm amazed with Rosetta!

My father-in-law's 17"/1GB/250GB just arrived following its world tour. Works perfectly. Blazingly fast. No complaints.
