Looks like Skype disconnects once iPhone goes in to sleeper mode. Doesn't it beat the whole purpose to begin with?

Darn!

It's out but not in Canada!!! That's so stupid! I'll keep using Skype on my my iPhone with Fring. I just don't get this!

can we use the new apple in-ear headphones for ipod touch to make an phone call through ipod touch?

Yeah, but you have to pay to make a call to an actual phone. But you can call other skype members for free, even on the iPod touch! :)

So What

Just what I need another phone bill....

Not sure I see the benefit of this service on my iPhone or iMac. Calls on my cell work just fine. Of course if I have a zillion friends who have also signed up to use Sykpe then OK but most people I know have cell phones or I iChat with tem in video, besides if the rumors are true iPhone will probally have video capability in June release of a new Phone???? :D

I did download and install on my first gen iPhone and everything worked fine. trying to make calls I got that "not enough credits message" LOL

Think I will stick with ATT, my iPhone and video iChat.:apple:

if you pull out a phone and start talking on it during a flight... flight attendant will order you to shut it down
Yeh that rule is in place for a reason—and it's not because cell phones are dangerous (mythbusters pretty much busted that one).

I don't have a problem with people staying connected—it's the jackasses who feel the need to have a 30 minute conversation, seemingly at the top of their lungs (and people on cell phones always seem to talk a lot louder).

Making calls with data on 3.0

Making and receiving calls without Wi-Fi on 3.0 beta. Had to reset once and it worked

Why are people still surprised that skype and other VOIP solutions are blocked over 3G? I just don't understand. Apple has said from day 1 they will allow VOIP over WiFi and not over the cellular network. With the current model it just doesn't make sense for the carriers to allow it over their data network. I too can't wait for the day I just pay for bandwidth and use it for whatever I want, but that isn't going to be anytime soon. Think about how long it took the music industry to get to DRM free digital downloads. These things take years, which sucks, but that's how it is.

I wonder if jailbreaking has anything to do with the crashes? I've noticed after a few mods the phone has a tendency to be a bit more quirky. I've found the whole process to be a bit overrated really.

Oh and yes skype crashes for me too.

Im running the application on 3 non broken iphones and same process for them all.... crashes,freezes.....
So I doubt its that , I think the application needs a few adjustments to make it run more smoother. Who knows, maybe its sucking up a lil more cpu.......

You got it right on the ball with that one. This app makes it easier for me, now I do not have to pay cell phone roaming fees when I have to call home, when I am out of the country. I would just buy some Skype credits, and use this iPhone application and Wi-Fi to call home at MUCH LOWER rates...as for people calling me....I am on vacation buddy!

Google for Skype-v1.0.1.ipa find the file, drag it into your itunes and add the applications that way.

It's simple, Rogers told Apple no, and contractually Apple has to comply.

Rogers said they had no problem allowing it. It wasn't released due to a patent that someone owns in canada (I'm guessing it is how to handle VOIP phonecalls on a portable device or some stupid broad patent). I downloaded the .ipa file and added it to my iphone that way and it works fine on rogers.

Rogers, which is the exclusive Canadian carrier for the iPhone, said it would not seek to block its customers from using the service.

You know I travel quite a bit, and if you can't do it over IM then tough.

Thankfully AA will be blocking the ports needed for voip, just imagine everyone trying to speak louder than the person sitting next to them to be heard on the other end ... it would be madness.

IM & email should be the only method for conversation @ 30,000 ft end of story.

If they allow voip, they had better allow tazers for passengers to self regulate the situation....

Can anyone confirm that a Skype subscription will work with this app? I can't seem to find any confirmation of this and I don't want to use all my Skype credit to find out lol

Chaim Haas, a public relations representative acting on behalf of Skype, said the application is available in every country in which the iPhone is on sale and in which Apple has an iTunes Store — with the exception of Canada.

Haas said this is because of patent-licence restrictions but would not elaborate except to specify that it is a patent issue related to Skype, not Apple.
Link.

See? You're not being gratuitously victimised…
;)

Edit: hmmm seems Yvan256 realised he was barking up the wrong Maple tree…

works with bluetooth?

Not sure but it didn't seem active to my BT headset on the test call.
Just wondering.

It's a big plus, especially if you have international skype friends/family and would like to keep the bill down.
