After checking everything out with this app I have to say it is very well made. It integrates extremely well with the iphone and runs great! I have not had any issues with it thus far and hasn't crashed on me either. Great job Skype! If you don't have this yet, download it! Now if I only knew more people with Skype.

Wow! A program that let's you use your iPhone as a phone!

Not a telephone, a voip device.

I was pissed to find out that everybody but Canada would get this (they could at least sell it in Canada to pay out the patent holders) but I decided to use my US iTunes account to download the Skype app.

I was afraid there would be a country IP block, but I'm happy to report: it works perfectly.

Nice. And I suppose that if the ip were a problem, it's easy enough to proxy for the purpose of the download.

Can't use voice

When I try to call a skype friend (not dialing their land line) I get an error message saying that "Skype calls over 3g networks are not supported due to restrictions that may be placed on your data plan."

What's up with that?!

Pretty stable here (original firmware).

But I don't get one thing.

I want to leave Skype app open when I lock my iPhone, this way my Skype contacts can call me. The problem is, it seems that I appear Offline to them after 5 min. Is it normal?

I hate Skype since I think the design is pretty poor and the call quality is terrible, but for some reason I am excited for this app. I think it'll make some things much easier when calling abroad or calling home.

My hope is Skype gets serious about call quality. Video is nice and all, but if they are serious about taking on the phone companies and cracking the enterprise in a serious way, they need to get call quality up dramatically.

All things considered, this is a great addition to my iPhone.

Well, i guess you wern't around in 2003 when it first started up, was 10x buggier than osx10, constant drops outs, poor voice quality. but it was free. :D anyhow, skype has come along way since then.

I would think that was normal. But maybe a bug?

Black Slang? That doesn't seem very PC.

I clicked on the link and read the exact same thing. Ummm ... yeah. Anyways.

Back on topic,
Do you really need a phone on your phone to call someone on a phone on their phone?????

For most people... no.
However, I live in Tokyo, the cheapest way to call a landline/mobile phone in another country is on Skype, considerably cheaper than calling cards as well which cost about $20 for only 35minutes worth of calls, keeping in mind there is more lag than on skype.

in saying that, i hope the quality of skype on iphone is equal to skype on my pc.

cant believe this is not available in canada....:(

Don't worry! the german telekom wants to block the whole application and they are the only company who is allowed to sell it there. WTF !!! They also block the ports for other IMs.

Great idea Apple !!

I downloaded it and it started right up. Everything is working well. I will be keeping Nimbuzz around though. It is nice to be able to chat with all the other clients in one app.

T-Mobile wants to block Skype connections over their network. That doesn't necessarily mean that it will not be available in the app store (unless they have an agreement with Apple over App Store contents). In addition it doesn't mean that it will not function over any non-T-Mobile wifi connection if you do have it on your phone.

You shouldn't be angry at Apple, but at the T-Mobile bastards here in Germany and The Netherlands.

Just checked: Skype is available in the dutch App Store!

This just makes me wonder as we go forward into the future - let's assume AT&T doubles or triples the speed of the data network, increases the data fee and says you don't have to have voice service anymore ...

If I am at home, I can understand canceling my home landline and using Skype. But if I'm on a cell phone, LOL,
I already have a phone. (can someone please explain)

What's this? Skyping for dummies? Looks like the ideal cover for a book!

Exactly, I don't know what all the excitement is about. This may make some phone calls cheaper than normal use, but this is hardly revolutionary, especially since you can't use it over 3G (but I could never see AT&T allowing people to bypass them over their very own network).

However, I could see how this would be very useful for people with Touches.

The ipod touch had skype for along time, whats so different about the iphone.

This is the OFFICIAL Skype app, there wasnt one beforehand for either the iPhone or iPod touch. Previously it was part of third party apps like Fring.

Anything beforehand was unofficial, that's the difference.
