Yes, does for me now too.

I don't know why it didn't before. But it did pop up with a warning about limitations in my data contract not allowing VOIP over the cell network.

Wow. Really? A screen of that would be good. I didn't get that message.

I'm running it on a non jailbroken 3G phone, and it's flawless. No crashes, and the voice quality to land lines, and another iPhone, calling their number, is fantastic.

So far, so good.

It works also on EDGE.

I don't even have an icon, i need to use a search tool to find skype to launch it...then it crashes like crazy.

great.. installed the new mobile substrate update. Now notifier and 5 column dock and 5 column springboard are broken :(
and skype still doesn't work over 3G for me, even with voipover3g (the only MobileSubstrate plugin that didn't die)

I wish they could have slipped push notification support in there.

I wonder if the PNS will be fast enough to notify us of incoming calls.

There is another mobile substrate update to fix this. The discussion is here. Mobile Substrate is disabled when the Skype app is running. The app works now, but only on wifi. Saurik is posting his progress in the link provided.

Just tested it out and it works pretty good. It seems a bit slow in retrieving the contact list, which seemed strange considering I'm on a fast WiFi network.

One thing I can not stand is how contacts are managed by Skype. I installed the Mac version first to import contacts from my Address Book and can't believe it makes a new listing for each phone number. What is up with that? This is something that really needs to be improved. Also it doesn't differentiate between first names and sur names. So once you import John Smith into Skype he will then appear under J where on the iPhone's Contact app he appears under S.

That's my biggest complaint with the app and probably why I deleted the Mac version way back when.

This just makes me wonder as we go forward into the future - let's assume AT&T doubles or triples the speed of the data network, increases the data fee and says you don't have to have voice service anymore ...

If I am at home, I can understand canceling my home landline and using Skype. But if I'm on a cell phone, LOL,
I already have a phone. (can someone please explain)

I'll bite.

I can call America from Japan for TWO CENTS per minute using skype. Using my old DoCoMo provider here in Japan, a standard call to America was nearly SEVEN DOLLARS per minute. Do the math and you see how terribly, terribly useful skype is.

The purpose of skype is the insanely cheap price for international calls.

If you have trouble with Skype app (and also have issues with Fring), another alternative is Nimbuzz.

and also for cross network calls made in the UK. Or, if someone's at their computer - or you are and you want to call someone.

Works on EDGE in UK, 3G in UK on O2-UK.

No skype for Canada? Dont tell me that! :D
edit: calling works on edge in Canada.

My 2nd Gen iPod Touch won't work because it tells me no microphone is attached. I am trying to use the headphones from my old iPhone.

What microphone(s) are supported? This headset works in other apps that need a microphone.

Oh how much I hate it when all discussions about iPhone apps is full of people who complain that the apps is crashing on their jailbroken iPhones, and 80% of all posts is only about cracks and tricks to make the app work on a jailbroken iPhone. It's so hard to find the useful information between all those posts. Couldn't MacRumors provide TWO discussion forums for each news, one for the jailbroken iPhones and one for the rest of us?

As restricted by Apple, the voice-over-IP phone calls will only work over Wi-Fi and not over the cellular connection.

Really, statements along these lines makes me jump of joy.

Ridiculous.

Just a sec, I'm downloading an add and subtract program for my calculator…

I'll make it simple so even you may understand the benefit:
International Calls. Make any?

Let's make a call from the UK to Australia…

British Telecom:
£0.26/minute link
vs
Skype:
£ 0.014/minute link
(And if I call via Skype-Skype it is *gasp* Free!)

So, you do the maths. (Using your new free calculator of course.)
