International Calls. Make any?

Let's make a call from the UK to Australia…

British Telecom:
£0.26/minute link
vs
Skype:
£ 0.014/minute link
(And if I call via Skype-Skype it is *gasp* Free!)

So, you do the maths. (Using your new free calculator of course.)

He can't, because the free calculator only does addition / subtraction
:p

This was long overdue!!

Finally I got rid of that Fring crap and now can use the real thing. I also like the perfect correspondence between Skype on iPhone and on my Mac (when both are running at the same time).

mind you... she's got one of these...

maybe they're too thin for Skype!

I'm really tired of being singled out and controlled by Apple as an iPhone user.

Its pretty despicable that this app is limited to Wifi. Nothing should be limited to Wifi. This is the point of paying for constant, "hi-speed" data. Doesn't matter if an app comes out that is suddenly "too useful".

What difference does it make, anyway? Its not like I can cancel/lower my voice plan and just keep 3G/Skype. I have the lowest plan as it is!

For the .001% of users who can rely only on Skype, Apple has crippled the usefulness of the application for everyone. Thanks.

Is this like the Skype that's been available on WinMo, S60 and Android for ages except can't use the 3G network and it crashes all the time?

:p

Apple crippled nothing. The crippling is set at the operator level not iPhone.

Has it perhaps occurred to you that maybe... just maybe... Apple has the no-voip-over-cellular restriction because they don't want to violate their exclusive partnerships with AT&T and other telcos in other countries and not because they just arbitrarily want to restrict things?

I have the $60/year Skype plan that gives me unlimited calls to regular phones, and it is WAY better quality than the free computer to computer calls. I use it all the time for international calls since I'm an American living in Indonesia. There are already Skype phones that connect to wifi networks, but most decent ones are $100 on up. I was looking at getting one (since calling from my MBP all the time gets annoying), but now this is one more reason to get an iPhone. I don't have one yet, but this app alone, if all the bugs get worked out, would be HUGE for me, especially for convincing my wife to let me get an iPhone!

Besides lower-cost international calling from your home country, doesn't this pretty much reduce the need for yellowsnow unlocking for foreign travel? Receiving calls would be an issue but as long as there's wifi you should be able to make them and not incur insane roaming charges. (I'm in Canada right now and have airport mode + data roaming off, but wifi enabled.) Seems pretty good to me...

...Works on EDGE in UK, 3G in UK on O2-UK.

Not in my experience (non-jailbroken, OS 2, O2-UK) - Admittedly I've only got a GPRS signal, but I'd be surprised if it wouldn't work on GPRS but would on 3G/Edge, especially as the wording specifically says 3G:

Here's to all the people that cried over MMS until the 3.0 announcement.

Sure would be nice if we could move in the direction where we just pay for the data stream and do what we like.

My 2nd Gen iPod Touch won't work because it tells me no microphone is attached. I am trying to use the headphones from my old iPhone.

What microphone(s) are supported? This headset works in other apps that need a microphone.

I have a 1st gen iPod Touch, and the article leads me to believe it'll work with that provided I get a microphone. To add onto this gentleman's question, anyone know which mike will work?
