JB phone with NON-Activated SIM

Can the new JB be done on an old phone that doesn't have an activated SIM? Another way of asking is...How do you JB with the new browser method if I don't have a connection to the internet via the phone browser.

Are you on 4.0? The difference between 4.0 & 4.0.1 is small, notice you indeed need an activated device to run this jailbreak.

I'm using 3.1.3. The phone is activated -- I used it in the US before bringing it here, and just cancelled the AT&T contract.

I really don't understand WHY somebody would want to JB their iPhone or iPad? I mean, literally, what exactly do you get from doing so?

anyone tried using the ipod touch 3rd gen??? when i slide the slider, it just shows the cosmos image... nothing is happening! i checked in itunes what version i am running and it says 4.0, not 4.0.1, but when i check for an update, itunes tells me that i am running the current firmware!
someone please lead me into the right direction

The guy that released it (comex) is known in the jailbreak community, so they wouldn't pull a stunt like that. Plus this is how the first jailbreaks were done back in the 1.x days. Nothing new.

Well, I don't literally mean this version of it or these people. I'm talking about someone taking it and using it for evil purposes.

But you're saying it's been possible to do since the very start? So what's stopped my fears from coming true? Is it a technical reason that stops it from being used this way? Or something else? Perhaps it's not as simple as I imagine and thus no one would be fooled by it?

Wish Apple realised this fight against jailbreaks is futile and would add a portal (just like oo.apple.com) to prepare the device to be jailbroken.

If they really worry about app privacy, update the damn app fairplay.. which has been exactly the same, untouched, since day 1.

go to settings-> safari
and then you should see sliders for javaskript, plug ins,...
and make sure java skript is enabled!!!

and with the internet connection i meant if you are using wifi!
cause it didnt start the download for me until i went downstairs and sat next to the wifi router

Just a note if it happens to take away your MMS, or Facetime. If you do a restore to factory settings, and then jailbreak then sync your info, NOT run from a backup it will work

This happened to me. I just waited about 10 min. then there was a update from cydia. Installed it took 1 min. then mms was working again. But facetime would not, turns out all I had to do at that point was go into settings , phone , and turn facetime on. works great

iPad is different though..it instantly restarts when I "slide to jailbreak" then when I go back to safari it goes back to the webpage I was on right before I went to jailbreakme.com Weird!!

If using 3G, wouldn't be surprised if AT&T is already blocking the address involved.

go and sit next to your wifi router and disable pop up blocker under the settings on your ipod!

Yes, I did it with a 3rd gen iPod Touch. And there is no 4.0.1 for the Touch - that update was to fix the signal bar display on the iPhone. So you are on the most current firmware for the Touch - 4.0.

What has Apple done to fight jailbreaking? A press release? That's a real iron fisted technique there.

Umm, I've never canceled my contract with AT&T so I can't assure you they didn't deactivated your SIM card. I don't think they would do it, but if anyone here can confirm they don't do that, you should be okay. Again.
