I really don't understand WHY somebody would want to JB their iPhone or iPad? I mean, literally, what exactly do you get from doing so?

Bump that.

While I understand the "it's mine, don't stop me from doing what I want with it" sentiment, I have yet to find anyone who can articulate that as a means to an end instead of an end unto itself.

Like someone insisting on setting up a table saw in a walled garden - not because he wants to improve the garden or the experience therein and needs the tools to make it happen, but just for the sake of having a table saw in a walled garden.

The only somewhat viable reason I've seen is tethering, which (as evidenced by AT&T halting the flat-rate $30/mo service) en masse would crush the 3G network.

iPad

Yes I am attempting to do it on an iPad 3G but I am in my wi-fi network.

It's has done this 3 times in a row so that's good enough for me right now. iPhone 4 was waiting forever and so I cancelled and restarted and it worked that time.

Will be waiting for iPad to work!!

Can someone give me a quick run-down of what this jailbreak will entail?

My i4 is the first iphone and i don't know exactly what it will do for my phone.
Sorry for being a noob, but i hope someone can take me seriously. thanks

It allows you to Customise everything on the phone, it allows installation of 3rd party apps that are not on the apple store and it allows you to install cracked versions of all the apps and games from Apples App Store without paying a penny for them.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_0_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/532.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0.5 Mobile/8A306 Safari/6531.22.7)

Is mobile terminal crashing for anyone else?

I am on a 3GS with 4.0.1

Yes. The Cydia version of Mobile Terminal crashes every time. You need to download an alternate version of the app, install SSH & iFile on your phone, and use an SSH/SFTP program (like Cyberduck) to upload the file to your 3GS. Then locate it in iFile and install it. Just do a search of the iPhone Hacks forum and you should be able to find a couple of threads from yesterday that will help you out.

What isn't viable to you may be to others. If you haven't done it, it's hard for anyone to explain what some of these Cydia apps add to the overall experience of the iPhone.

okay... what is or isnt your ipad doing?

Appreciate the quick reply my friend!

Customize- as in SMS, EMAIL, etc...?

The real story is the method used to jailbreak. There has to be a serious security flaw in place for this to be possible. Visit a site, cliick a selection- your OS is altered.

Just basic things that any smartphone should be able to handle by default. However, Apple Inc only wants you to use the apps and functions that they approve and get a revenue from.

I know people who jailbroke their phone just out of curiosity and to make a statement of wanting to use their phone as they want to.

The last time I went to the O2 store, the guy haven't even commented on the fact that the phone was obviously jailbroken, so I told him. He said "Yep a lot of them are. You just have to do it, right?".

Slick JB. I am all for it, as a developer I am not worried about piracy. All of my applications are free and ad-supported, If you are a developer I would suggest you figure out how to monetize free applications or get ready for some more piracy. Really all apple needs to do is update the way they secure their appstore.

So you wouldn't have a problem with somebody cracking your app and removing all the ads and making this new version available to everyone? Or using another method such as editing the iPhone's HOSTS file after jail breaking so that none of your ads download?

I'm not having a go, I'm just curious as you're a developer. I've seen quite a few people who've jail broken their iOS devices soley so they can download everything for free. The problem is that they have ad free versions of apps on there as well. So if a developer releases a free ad supported app and also a $0.99 ad free version they'll have access to the ad free version for free. Surely that's a lose-lose situation for the developer? And pretty a selfish decision by the user, no?

Again, I'm not judging I'm just curious to know your views as you make apps for a living and clearly support the ad based model.

Cheers.

best jb ever.

Really? I did it a couple hours ago and while the process was easy and without fault. The after JB experience has been completely worthless. I jailbroke to:

Run a realtime weather widget.
Run a realtime stock widget.
Delete worthless stock Apple apps such as notes, weather, compass, etc..
Have live wallpaper.
Change my lockscreen for realtime updates of calls, email, texts, weather, stocks.

And I can't get Cydia to do anything. It's installed fine but it's maddening! to see all of this in reach but nothing will download.

here we go.....

There's more things you can do with a jailbroken phone than just tethering. While I realize that it's not everyone's thing for one reason or another, you can't possibly think people just jailbreak their phones "just because," which is what your statement seems to imply. Among many things....you can customize the look and theme of your phone to look completely different, add a bunch of free apps that weren't allowed in the Apple app store (along with paid apps on Cydia as well). And to say jailbreaking doesn't make the phone more useful or the experience better is just plain ignorance. LockScreenInfo allows me to display my calendar on the fly on my lock screen as well as emails, texts, weather, etc. so I don't have to unlock my phone and open an app....those extra steps are more inconvenient when you can see it all displayed on your home screen.

While you may not agree or want to jailbreak, you have to understand that there are things that do make the iPhone better that you can only achieve with a jailbreak.

Fixed that for you.

windows mobile may not have the prettiest UI but at least it did not need to be hacked/jailbroken. you've paid for the hardware, you were able to install *whatever* you wished on YOUR device.

but of course, things are changing with windows phone 7. following apple's footstep, applications for wp7 will need to be "approved" by microsoft.

time to look in to Symbian/Linux/Android.

apple's are way too restrictive for my taste.

I think we can all agree that Apple is too restrictive. No one's arguing with you there.

However, whereas the UI problems on WinMo and Android cannot be fixed period, iOS's problems can easily be fixed with a simple jailbreak.

Your argument is that WinMo allows you to do anything to your phone right off the bat with no modification whatsoever, but on the iPhone, it takes an extra minute to jailbreak.

Yeah... no. iOS wins. And I'm an Android user who's switching to an iPhone 4 later this month because I can't even stand Android's UI, much less WinMo's.

I might JB now just to have a live wallpaper. Gonna wait till I back up at home before I do anything later on tonight.

Wait a week, servers are being hammered.

My unactivated iphone 3gs is now jailbroken. Is there a posibility that I can use it as a phone now? Can I get 3g networking on it? Let me know what I can do.

iPad 3G - Reboot loop after jailbreak

I ran this on my iPad 3G and the jailbreak ran ok. I had the cydia store and all seemed fine until I rebooted the iPad. Now I am in a reboot cycle and will need to restore. This seems to be an issue with 3G iPads, anyone else with this problem?

Arg, shouldn't have done it at work, now I have to wait until I get home to restore the iPad.
