Just basic things that any smartphone should be able to handle by default. However, Apple Inc only wants you to use the apps and functions that they approve and get a revenue from.

This isn't an answer to "What does Jailbreaking get me" it is an empty statement.

I would like to know as well. I don't have need or desire to JB my phone, and i keep wondering what everyone sees in it....

I really don't understand WHY somebody would want to JB their iPhone or iPad? I mean, literally, what exactly do you get from doing so?

Free apps! (Yes I know you are going to whine developers, but i'm doing it anyway). (Try using iAds, I heard you can make a lot of money from that)

The ones you listed are integral to the main functions of the device. Blockbuster app is third party and they paid to be put there. Be real.

We could still do without the Stocks and YouTube apps. Those things are horrible.

I never said it was the right thing to do, but lets not be stupid here, 90% of people that jailbreak install I********s, infact apart from UI customisation its the main reason for JB'ing no matter how people try to justify it. I personally am ok with piracy.

Where are people getting this 90% figure from? This is about the 3rd or 4th person I've seen claim this in recent days.

Think of the phone like a jeep...

...maybe you want to put big wheels on it and raise the suspension.

I haven't either until now. I just want facetime over 3G.

ok so i wanna update my iphone 3gs 3.1.3 with spirit jailbreak to the newest firmware and use this new star jailbreak to jailbreak it.
how do i go about doing this?

i have downloaded the new firmware.
is it just a case of updating it to the new firmware via itunes and then opening safari and go to the website to do the new jailbreak or do i need to wipe spirit off of it first before i update the firmware?

However, integral you are stuck with the ones Apple gives you. With the Android you can choose a different MMS App, a different Phone Dialer, a Different Music player, etc etc.

And as I replied to someone earlier, it's probably something that cannot be explained to you. You pretty much have to do it and try out some of the non-Apple approved apps to see just how much more functionality your phone can have. For me, being able to save non-photo email attachments to the phone's file system via iFile and then transfer them to DocumentsToGo is a fantastic thing that allows me to edit files on the go without having to use DocumentsToGo's middleman software to upload directly from a computer to the phone. LockInfo allows me to see missed calls, calendar appointments, new emails, etc. without having to unlock the phone and go to each individual app. There are SMS apps that allow you to respond to texts without having to leave the app you're currently working in. MobileTerminal and OpenSSH allow network admins like me to connect to remote machines on the road in case of an emergency.

But as I said, you have to find your own reasons to jailbreak. Everybody's reasons are not the same.

This is all nice, but how the hell can a website jailbreak your iPhone? Isn't that a security bug? I mean a website shouldn't be allowed to change your firmware just by pressing a button, it sounds like some serious vulnerability to me! This means that by simply navigating to a website and sliding one button, you void your warranty and allow modification of the firmware? I'm sure this could be used for some really bad stuff! How is it possible?

This reminds me a little bit of the Bootcamp debacle. Apple officially didn't step in until the community got their act together and hacked it in. This ruling about jail breaking being officially legal will undoubtedly create a cottege industry of different people trying to make a quick buck out of it. Media attention has made this big and news corporations are running stories about it, every tom dick and harry knows they can jailbreak their phone now.

This kind of hack job in the pre-bootcamp world forced Apple to make a better solution - to delineate where their authority starts and stops. Apple can try to keep plugging holes with the iOS but this is so well known now, that perhaps they're better off providing a safer solution like with bootcamp and saying "from here on, you're on your own"

Of course the jailbreak community sprung up quickly and became a piracy hotbed. With Bootcamp, people just wanted to run windows. So their approach might likely be different.

exciting times!

Apple pioneered and (let's face it) brought mp3's out of the ashes of physical music media with iTunes. Does one honestly need 5 different phone dialing apps? Much less MMS? but hey more power to you.

I think this is more newsworthy as a security flaw than anything else. Having someone get total access of your phone simply by going to a Website is nasty business. Then again, jailbreaking is fairly shady, so I guess that's perfect.

Appreciate the quick reply my friend!

Customize- as in SMS, EMAIL, etc...?

As in install iPhone apps that Apple rejects from the iTunes store. I've got a nice app that reports details on Wifi networks in the area. Apple doesn't allow it, but I find it extremely useful when troubleshooting wifi issues.

As in remove the icons for apps like Stocks, Weather, iTunes, etc. that Apple won't let you remove even if you never use them.

As in install custom backgrounds and themes which Apple doesn't allow you to do.

As in give you full control over a device that you own, rather than being restricted by a corporate entity as to what you can and cannot do with it.

OK. Just because few cool features I had registered my iPhone to Beta program (I'll not do that again!) The last update 4.0.1 was performed via iTunes.

However, I read somewhere that if you have a developer beta version(s), do not jailbreak it. Is this true? Would I still be able to go Jailbreakme.com and jailbreak the phone although my phone once updated under developer's account?

Anybody tried this with developer/beta version iPhone?

If your iphone 4 has iOS 4.0.1 and you jailbreak it, can you upgrade to iOS 4.1.0 when it comes out or do you need to reset, upgrade to IOS 4.1.0 and then jailbreak it again.

Woohoo

Yeah, we developers love free-spirited attitudes like this!

Hey, why don't you post your device id's for us, so we can send you LOTS of free apps!

;)
