you have to understand that there are things that do make the iPhone better that you can only achieve with a jailbreak.

Hence the question some of us have: what?

LockScreenInfo sounds interesting/useful, but is it really so valuable that you'll give up Apple's updates & other "walled garden" benefits to achieve it? Tweaking the UI may be nice, but likewise not a big selling point. Tethering is great, but there's a reason it's blocked (wanna play in a crowded room, gotta follow the rules).

Don't get me wrong: totally open sounds great ... except for that little under-discussed issue of the costs (financial & practical). I'm seeing a lot of push for the means and not much appreciation of the ends. In the end, what's really so compelling?

I love the idea of Linux also: open, flexible, free, etc. ... but whenever I try it out (and as a SW engineer I can deal with a lot), it's just too much headache overhead to bother with given that, on the whole, paid by-the-rules systems work much better as tools for getting other jobs done.

OK, LockScreenInfo. Nifty. What else?

I wonder how long it will take before someone in this thread lectures us all against jailbreaking and/or tells us that it is only used to steal and pirate things or claim that it bricks your device. Because these people have done so for the last 12 jailbreaks.

Oh yes. First, according to Apple, and therefore the total 100% undeniable truth, is that JailBreaking opens up the cell phone network to a terrorist attack. Yep, Jail Breaking is akin to terrorism and should be STAMED OUT. Those who attempt to JB Apple devices are just aiding and abetting terrorist; and thwarting the gallant efforts of Apple to stop them. Second, Jail Breaking takes valuable resources away from Apple just when they need them the most. Do you know how many Apple executives can afford GulfStream V Jets? You would be shocked to know its 3 or 4....tops. Very sad,:( this needs to be at least 10 to 15+ before we can be happy in the Apple Ecosystem. Sure, more could get them if they went with Enron repos but Apple executives deserve better than this. Third, Jail Breaking takes away money from ATT and puts strain on their very robust network that is second to none in coverage and signal strength.

OK. Just because few cool features I had registered my iPhone to Beta program (I'll not do that again!) The last update 4.0.1 was performed via iTunes.

However, I read somewhere that if you have a developer beta version(s), do not jailbreak it. Is this true? Would I still be able to go Jailbreakme.com and jailbreak the phone although my phone once updated under developer's account?

Anybody tried this with developer/beta version iPhone?

It won't work. Odds are Apple has already closed the PDF exploit in the next update.

Yaaaay lets support software piracy which is what 99% of people who jailbreak their iphones use it for anyways.

Hey guys,

When I download this, and if I want to take it off again, I have the following questions...

I am on a Mac.

1) How will I go back to my backup? Just click Restore? Will it not brick it?

2) If I ever need to send it into Apple or go to an Apple Store for repair, will they know about it?

Woohoo! Free at last. That was crazy easy. Took less than a minute and put the Cydia app on my 3GS (ios4.0.1)

What happens when Apple releases a new ios4? If I install right away, does it disable JB? Do I lose JB apps? Should I wait for a new JB method for the new release?

Many thanks.

Lot of things are not fully up to snuff with the iPhone 4. Here's hoping for quick updates.

MyWi is not available yet from what I can see :(

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't this VERY VERY bad?

Aren't we one step away from someone else being able to Jailbreak your phone against your will just by tricking you with a fake phishing website?

Could they perhap JB your phone and start doing who-knows-what and stealing your info before you really know what's going on?

I support the right of others to Jailbreak their own phones, but this sounds like a totally different direction to me.

+1 ....

At least the old ways of jail breaking gave you some control and made sure that people that had no idea of what they were doing generally didn't JB.

how can a website jailbreak your iPhone? Isn't that a security bug? I mean a website shouldn't be allowed to change your firmware just by pressing a button, it sounds like some serious vulnerability to me!

Bingo.

The real news isn't the "touch here to jailbreak", it's the gaping security hole any website can drive a truckfull of ninjas into.

You lose the jailbreak. Apple likely already closed the hole in 4.1.

You click restore. Done. When you restore you wipe the device. Apple won't know. If you're extra paranoid you can start over as a new phone so any lingering jailbreak code - as unlikely as it seems unless you do some things - isn't present.

Ding ding ding!

Soooo..... have I got this right..... I can just waltz into my local Apple Store, wander over to the display iPhones and jailbreak 'em all?

windows mobile may not have the prettiest UI but at least it did not need to be hacked/jailbroken. you've paid for the hardware, you were able to install *whatever* you wished on YOUR device.

but of course, things are changing with windows phone 7. following apple's footstep, applications for wp7 will need to be "approved" by microsoft.

time to look in to Symbian/Linux/Android.

apple's are way too restrictive for my taste.

Bye! dont let the door hit you on the way out

Don't be surprised if Apple pushes out another update this week that closes the hole. 3.1.4, 3.2.2., and 4.0.2 can't be far.

I am using it now....

So it is definately available...

Hmmm so I JB'd my phone and when I enter cydia the first time it gives me some cache errors saying it can't connect to pull some of the packages- then asks me to update some server software -when I do so - it then seems to work but the home screen on cydia NEVER loads and times out. Then I tried downloading dtunes and it says there's a compatibility error and wont let me.... thoughts??

Millions of other people have the same idea as you. I am going to jailbreak my phone and download tons of crap from Cydia! The servers are getting slammed.

I really don't understand WHY somebody would want to JB their iPhone or iPad? I mean, literally, what exactly do you get from doing so?

Here are three excellent reasons:

MyWi. Tether without having to pay AT&T any extra money per month. I can share my phones connection with other iPhones and my computers here. They simply see my phone as a WiFi connection or I connect to my computer and share my phones 3G through USB. MyWi 4.0 is for iOS 4.0.

iBlacklist. I can block any phone number. I can block any number not in my contacts and I can block all private numbers.

3G Unrestrictor. I can download any size file on 3G from iTunes and the App store. Videos play as if they were on a WiFi connection in YouTube.

Those are the three best reasons that I Jailbreak.

Downsides?

So just because I'm careful with my technology stuff and I haven't done it before, what are the negative effects of jailbreaking (if any)?

If you have to can you un-jailbreak the phone by restoring factory setting?
Can you still use the app store and everything else just like a regular iPhone?
Is the jailbreak remotely detectable?
Are there any downsides that anyone can think of?

And then we'll have a choice - stay Jailbroken and live with a potentially MASSIVE vulnerability, or fix the vulnerability but lose the jailbreak.
