OK Go has a legitimate complaint. In less than six months 1stAveMachine produces nearly identical short film productions for OK Go then Apple, Inc.using the same director and possibly the same location....

What happened to "Think Different"?

OK Go should beat down 1stAveMachine for their obvious lack of creative ambition. Apple should have known better but I see little creative inspiration in their products of late.

Ha. When I saw that OK GO video about a month ago I thought 'Wow, this is completely unoriginal, I've seen this type of thing a million times'

For example: The Channel 4 ads
http://www.tv-ark.org.uk/mivana/med...b6bf&media=channel4_uscity_ident2006&type=mp4

Funny how OK GO are now claiming they invented it.

And I'm always wary of a band that are known for their videos, not for their music. Oh, and now their videos are rip offs.

"Wow, I really love listening to that OK GO song" Said nobody, ever.

A kid in high school, about 15 years ago, had a t-shirt, that when lifted so that the middle was folded in on itself, would invite another school to perform inappropriate acts on themselves. Same concept, maybe he should complain against OK Go.

Watch out y'all, I wouldn't say "Ok G*" band name in here. They might sue you for stealing their band name.

Not sure it really matters. Let's be honest, the OK Go video will get tonnes of hits now, which can only win them audience and hopefully money.

Plus, I've seen this kind of thing all over the place. Even in my home town of Cardiff, there's a massive water barrage with these kinda "stand in place" patterns. It's definitely not new.

The only irony is the message in Apple's video combined with the fact they spoke to the group. Here Apple have been a bit naughty.

Anyway… just wasted 2.5 minutes of my life watching the Apple gaff. Boring promo stuff.

Can't believe all the idiots here blindly defending Apple. OK Go are quite right - that video was a total rip-off. Not cool Apple, not cool.

By the way morons, OK Go are well known internationally and a really cool group.

The video isn't even an advertisement, it was an intro video to a keynote.

Justin Bieber is well known internationally. OK Go plays crappy music that a 9 year old could make on his iPad.

Does not matter if Apple executed it better than OK Go. All it matters was that Apple was approached by OK Go and the concept was explained to them. They did not collaborate but went ahead with a similar concept.

If Apple is not wrong then SJ was wrong in accusing Google of copying. There cannot be two different yardsticks for anything. Apple did not lose anything due to google. It lost market share because of its pig headedness.

Glad you guys all agree

Because no artists ever borrow ideas

As a web designer this is terrifying. If someone can copyright an aesthetic, I'm screwed. All designs that aspire to be relevant and contemporary SHOULD be looking at currently popular trends. I personally think the idea is clever even though a bit cliche. If Apple was selling the video for a profit to other music video outlets where OK Go makes money, then I MAYBE see a cease and desist issue. But this is not anywhere near the case. OK Go, a completely irrelevant band, trying to get attention over a national headline?

I agree with the first responder... anyone care?

A lot of people here just don't get it apparently. It's the fact that they courted Apple with the idea for collaboration. They more than likely fully explained everything to Apple only to have Apple turn them down then do the exact thing they were just talking about. That's why OK GO is PO'd. I'd have to agree w/ OK GO and say that Apple wouldn't have made that video if OK GO hadn't presented the idea a few months earlier.

Any legal action, no. The idea itself isn't original but what a way to burn a bridge unnecessarily. "No we aren't interested." Then makes a video of it.

OK GO makes amazing videos. Every single one is awesome. I don't buy any of their music, but I always look forward to new albums because that means another video is coming.

Who cares 0_o

Well "OK Go" this is not something you can own a copyright for ;) anyone can do it as it is only 3D illusion, the song sucks and they are just mad because Apple didn't chose them instead of U2 :p:p :apple: go to Samsung for some attention LOL

Original?!

I'm sorry, saw this done years ago, and even then it was nothing new. It's a great video, using lots of techniques used before - this band has delusions of grandeur - are they really claiming to be the first people to have used these techniques?!

Apple copy something? Never! I won't hear a word of it.

I mean when it's the other way around I care immensely. Say if Samsung copied something Apple did. Then I'd care.

Yours faithfully,
The Macrumors community.

Yeah except for the fact that this time the ones accusing are actually wrong, since they didn't invent the concept at all, so it's stupid they accused them of stealing.

When i first watched this on the keynote I thought 'Oh no Apple is copying Amazon's Fire phone gimmick!'

Uhhh NO!!

They're just jealous that apple did a better job.

Apple did not do a better job. Most if not all of Apple's was animation. And not nearly as creative. That being said, OK Go was not the first to use this kind of effect so who did they copy??

I feel like apple could have used ok go music or something as a nod to them, but hey it's a very old idea and the look is not going to be unique enough to warrant being able to complain. Even apple not going with the idea stinks of the band actually being told why do we need your idea it's already a thing and hey we only promote musicians who are in the illuminati.

Surprised

Wow, I clicked to read the comments because I thought a lot of people would be discussing how Apple should have done the right thing here. Instead there is so much babying of Apple. Hey, they can handle it if they made a mistake, and they made a mistake.

Sure, perspective writing is nothing new. But that doesn't matter. As a few people pointed out, what does matter is how it all went down.

Look, the color white is nothing new. But if you were the guy who came to Apple back in the day and said, "Hey, I think the ol' rainbow Apple is cool and all, but we are headed in a direction of simplicity. Let's make the Apple logo all white. I've got this graphic design team, 2ndStreetGears, that can really make it look great."

And then Apple says, "Nah, get outta here kid, ya bother me."

Then they go and hire 2ndStreetGears and do exactly what you said.

Wouldn't that tick you off a bit?

OK Go didn't invent this. This has been a trend in Design for a long time.
Apple's uses totally different visual tricks for a similar concept and is shot about 10x better. (since they clearly used a programmed motion control camera)

No way does this even make it to trial.
