24 hr impressions after coming from a 6S:

GOOD:
1. Holy crap the cameras are good. Portrait selfies blew me away and definitely not a gimmick if you frame and adjust bokeh properly. Just wow!

2. Screen is amazing as far as color and edge to edge, wallpapers looks so damn good. Much easier to type on. (I know bezels are larger than XS but remember I’m coming from a phone with a giant top and bottom bezel.

3. Face ID is very impressive how it works even if not directly in front of the phone. Worked when leaning over my desk at work.

4. Animoji......yep, Animoji are a charmer. Guilty pleasure. Don’t see my self using them daily but I definitely see a use for them and it’s just plain fun.

5. Battery life is amazing. I’m now at 20 percent 20 hours after fully charging (minus 8 hours of sleep) so that’s 12 hours of mostly heavy usage since I’ve been playing around with the camera a lot. Very very impressive.

NOT SO GOOD (at least right now)

1. The only negative is that this is a much heavier and larger phone than the 6S. One handed use results in a little cramping and I have larger hands (no problem there folks, believe me ;) ). I’ve read it takes some getting used to so I’ll give it a few more days. I don’t think it’s a deal breaker considering how many more amazing features there are with the XR. I’m using the phone naked now and I don’t know how I’ll like a giant case on it so I may order a very thin low profile case to protect from scratches. I’ve only dropped a phone 3 times in the last 10 years. So I’m pretty careful.

So there is my quick highlight after a day. Feel free to discuss and I’d love feedback from people on size and weight issues. Does it go away ? Have you gotten used to a larger phone ?

Well there's that. I've never liked Apple cases at all.

Yea but Apple hasn’t released one so he’s pretty much assed out.

The size and weight will take some getting used too. Give it about a week and you won’t notice it much anymore. I have the Max and it was really heavy at first but I’ve gotten used to it.

So far, I love my new bright red XR! However, I haven’t used all of features yet. Face ID is surprisingly faster and not as annoying as I thought it might be, though if I’m wearing my sunglasses, I have to compensate. I really miss the battery status; I would prefer the number as to the icon. (I know it’s only a swipe away. Just an observation.).
I don’t miss the home button, so that’s nice.

The notch doesn’t really bother me, though one of my timewaster games (Yahtzee with Buddies) has the score right in that space. I need to figure that out or quit the game.

I bought a clear Moko case from Amazon and had it ready, so when the Apple store guy showed me the non-Apple cases, declining was easy. My case was $8. I’m sure I’ll get another one before it turns yellow, as I want something with a pocket, but this will work until then.

I haven’t watched any videos or taken photos yet; that’s going to be the real test. So far, I really like it. It’s so much faster than my 7+, and the battery is much better. I have to say, I love wireless charging too. (Also ordered from Amazon in anticipation of this arrival, and much less expensive than Apple’s version. I’d rather spend the $$ on a watchband!)

Love:

  • Battery life
  • Build quality
  • Display
  • Performance

Dislike:
  • Keyboard
  • Notification system

The keyboard is what I miss most from Android. The Apple keyboard does not have quicktype suggestions in my language so I have to use third party keyboards. Gboard is good, but doesn't support multiple simultaneous languages like it does on Android. Swiftkey is decent but I don't like it. It does support multiple simultaneous languages though.

When I switch between Swedish and English the layout also changes in Apple keyboard and Gboard. Keys get wider and the spacing is different so muscle memory doesn't work well.

And I have to switch back an forth since thirty party keyboards won't show password autofill (for obvious reasons). Neither Gboard nor Swiftkey have cursor when holding on spacebar.

Typing is going to be difficult to get used to for me.

And the notifications could be better. Like how about an indication that there are new notifications on the homescreen like on the Apple watch? And mark as read right from the notification so I don't have to open apps unnecessary?

I do love the performance, battery life, build quality and display though. I fully charged it 12 hours ago and with 5-6 hours of light to medium use I'm now down to 53%

Edit: I have to make a correction. The stand-alone Gboard app now supports multiple simultaneous languages!

Battery Life, I had a iphone 7, I use an application to practise my Spanish and it killed the battery on my 7, I had to charge it 2 times a day if I was using the app a lot, well I took the Xr off the charger at 1:30 in the morning and well here's a Screenshot at 22:42 the next day. I was at home all day on wifi, but it's the same usage that kills the battery in the 7 home and on wifi, I am amazed!

If it’s true that long press on notifications does nothing, that is an absolute deal breaker for me. I can’t give that up as I use it constantly. Can someone verify this for me...

Unfortunately, it does nothing

the haptic touch functionality is really only present at the lock screen for flashlight and camera, and that's it

It is in the CC as well, but we had that long press functionality on every iPhone that supports iOS 11 and 12 (incl. non-3D touch devices like 5s, 6, SE)

[doublepost=1540751741][/doublepost]
I mentioned this earlier in a reply to someone else, but you can still do quick reply to texts in the Notification Center by swiping left on the notification and touching "view". Not exactly like 3D touch, but pretty close. I'd imagine this would be another good candidate for a haptic touch version in a future iOS update.

That is the same functionality in the 5s, 6 and SE as well, just to add to the discussion point

I'm really missing 3D Touch...

I am also missing 3D touch.

I didn't think i'd miss it this much but not being able to peek and pop every link and text feels like a step back

Haptic touch may evolve to fully replace 3D touch via software one day (similar to how Android uses a software version of 3D touch)

but even that really doesn't replace the physical 3D touch. I am hoping Apple doesn't axe it like reports suggest they will, unless haptic touch truly evolves into a 1:1 replacement

I went to two separate stores (T-Mobile and AT&T) to check out the XR and i noticed a slight delay when i release my finger while using the haptic touch on the keyboard. It happened 3 out of 5 times i tried, this doesnt happen with my 6s.

Does this delay happens to any of you?

I recorded a video of it.Both phones where on ios 12.0

Coming from a cheaper Xiaomi Android phone, I am loving my Xr, some minor inconveniences I discovered:
  • sometimes, one handed usage is more difficult due to longer display (coming from a 5.5")
  • I miss having a notification LED
  • Haptic Touch needs more features (mainly shortcuts from the homescreen)
Other than this, I'm loving the display quality, the amazing battery life, fluidity of iOS, FaceID, camera quality.
I've got the black one and it looks incredibly sleek

For those dumbfounded by the lack of Apple XR cases, the online store will be updated after the 10/30 event with new iPad accessories. That would seem to be when we’d see new XR cases as well. Maybe they didn’t want to update the store twice over just a few days.

I hope that will happen and we get One Case like the other Leather and Silicone Cases.....

Really? Why did they for the X and the Xs/Max??? Do you really think it’s a big deal to update the store?

As above. Little review after 24 hours.

I don’t like the notch. I find it a bit jarring because I forget about it. Look up and there it is.

I wish the bezels were white (obviously that’s completely personal preference).

The screen is lovely.

I love the feel of the phone. I always found the 6/7/8 very slippery so had a case that gave good grip but added bulk. This has a nice weight so I don’t feel like I’m trying to type on a wet soap bar.

Not had chance to try the camera yet.

Battery is insane. Coming from a normal 8 I’d have to charge around 6-7pm now it’s almost 11pm and I’m on 60% and I’ve not put it down today.

Honestly I just love this phone.

Since they update the store for each event my guess is they will wait and add the cases for the XR on Tuesday. It’s the only thing I can think of that makes any sense.

Coming from a X here as well.

  • The screen. I’m double sided on this, and I have both likes and dislikes about it but I do think its shortcomings were much overdramatized. Overall though, I think it’s a beautiful LCD screen and the drop to 828p and PPI are not a problem for me.
  • Camera is awesome. Took some videos at a club last night for a Halloween party, inside and outside the venue, and was quite impressed.
  • Smaller iOS elements; everything is a bit tinier on the XR versus the X, which gives the home screen more breathing room and I find it easier to type on the keyboard.
  • Cheaper, including AppleCare+
  • The colors. I love my white XR!
  • Super loud speakers. Louder than the X.
  • Better battery life
  • I prefer the aluminum frame over the stainless steel build. I think it looks super sleek, feels good, and the fact that it matches all my other Apple products satisfies the OCD in me.
Dislikes
  • Bigger, heavier, and chunkier. I do prefer the size and weight of the X over the XR. It’s much more difficult handling the XR one handed and it makes me want a smaller XR size even more.
  • No official Apple case!
  • The screen. Although I said I liked it, it does have a shimmering effect and brightness drop once tilted off axis from the “sweet spot”, as Nilay pointed out on the Verge podcast.
  • No HDR and I will miss the black blacks of the OLED screen.
  • No more 3D Touch. Say what you will, but I enjoyed it and I’ll miss it.

If it was public info everyone would know. Since it’s not, again I ask why would anyone here know?

Xr is quite heavy, if people use cases on it it will be more heavier. Probably Apple want people to use xr without case so people get used to its weight. Maybe then they will release light weight clear case for it. 3rd party cases I saw in apple store weren’t good.

Hello and Good Morning from Spain.

I just bought my iPhone XR and what is my surprise to discover that you can't see full notifications on the iOS 12.0 lockscreen by long clicking on the top of it. This way of displaying full notifications in the lockscreen does work on my iPad 6 with iOS 12. However on the iPhone XR you have to swipe the notification to the left and click on "View", two steps instead of one to be able to see the entire notification.

Very bad on Apple's part. A bad step backwards to be able to see the entire notifications in the lock screen of the iPhone XR.

Greetings from Spain.

Came from a 7 Plus.
Love everything except for the lack of 3D Touch (used it for quick looks on emails and pictures). Still getting used to Face ID, but it's been smooth so far. The notch doesn't bother me, nor does the fact that the screen is more of a vertical stretch compared to the 8/7 Plus and previous models. Love the size - I knew the Max wouldn't be doable for me since the 7 Plus was already pushing it in the one hand use department. Also didn't want to dive back into the X/Xs size (almost identical physically to the 8/7/6). Camera is great, will work for what I want it for (I carry my Nikon when I need to get "the shot", but I've sold some shots I took with my 7 Plus). Jumped down in storage size from 128 to 64 since I run most of my things through either iCloud, Adobe Cloud or Google Photos.

Haven't really monitored battery too much. I've found that by putting the percentage in the control center, I'm not really as anal about it as I was on previous models. Part of that is likely due to the ridiculous battery life.

Overall, I'm very pleased.

Although I’m fully aware the new XR doesn’t have 3D Touch, all my other non 3D Touch devices like the iPad Pro 10.5 v2 for example, allow me to press and hold any notifcfication from the lock screen to quickly interact with it from the lock screen rather than tap on the notification to fully open the associated app. When I press and hold the notification on the XR lock screen nothing happens.

I contacted Apple today and spoke with a senior technical adviser, to identify why this feature has been disabled on the XR where is works everywhere else and they told me they don’t know why.....my thoughts are that in order to create a very clear distinction between the XS and the XR apple are making a real point of the fact that the XR doesn’t have 3D Touch by stripping away useful features. What a surprise Apple....another ‘Brave’ counter intuitive decision to increase user workflow and make their lives harder!

Is anyone else with the XR experiencing the same behaviour?

Just to be clear I know I can replicate the ‘quick reply’ type behaviour from the lock screen by swiping a notification left and the selecting view, however this method just adds another click to achieve something that can be achieved on all other devices 3D Touch enabled or not, just by pressing any holding and when you use this action a hundred times a day, extra taps just become slow and cumbersome.

Just put the Same point above my friend....it’s a real pain! This has to be remedied in a future update surely, I spoke with apple and they said submit feedback about it on apple.com/feedback.......

It is true, it’s not even a 3D Touch thing either, iPads can do this just fine without 3D Touch using the long press!

Very, very upset with this. My iPad 6 does not have 3D Touch or Haptic Touch and this functionality works perfectly in iOS 12.0.1. I hope they solve it quickly in a future iOS update.
