We are talking iPhones not iOS devices.

Assuming the very maximum 2.5B smartphone in the world (I believe this to be more 2B)
But based on 2.5B and iPhone's market share of 14.6% approx

http://iphone.appleinsider.com/arti...marketshare-dropping-beyond-seasonal-averages

I get that to 365M but lets call it 500M as the 14.6% was previously higher.

Thats half your 1B which I think you are referring to the recent 1B iphone sold https://www.macrumors.com/2016/07/27/apple-has-sold-1-billion-iphones/amp/?client=safari NINE years since Steve launched the iPhone in 2007.

.....

Also any large brand needs constant FREE PR to survive.

"Advertising is what you pay for, publicity is what you pray for."

https://www.forbes.com/sites/robert...erence-between-pr-and-advertising-credibility
You think the company that has a powerful brand such as apple, needs free advertising on MR? That is like giving water to the dolphins, to use some hyperbole. Apple doesn't need the type of "pr" associated with rumors, imo, they need a solid advertising campaign.

Also the link you cited was before the iphone 7 release and things could have changed significantly, especially during the holiday seasons.

We don't need or want a curved display like the S7, it's such a pointless design that distorts pictures and videos. If they truly copy Samsung on this then I will loose all faith in Apple and know any resemblance of the company's Steve helped make is gone now.

Can we agree your 1B was based on nine years of sales https://www.macrumors.com/2016/07/27/apple-has-sold-1-billion-iphones/ ?

If not please can you substantiate you 1B figure.

I only ready up to maybe 10 posts in this thread before I responded.maybe you should go read it from the beginning.

post 3 and 7 is when I posted my response.i don't need to read the rest.samsung owns and invented the curved OLED technology.they have shown off curved OLED before the god damned iPhone 5 at CES

one guy said Samsung copied curved glass because it was what apple used in a building.lmfao you people are delusional.go on YouTube and see how far back Samsung showed off its curved flexible OLED displays
Yep, got down the "you guys", as if there is a divide here. Like the "you people" are delusional, that you just cited. Which "you people" are you referring to? And don't you know this is just a rumor; I can almost guarantee Apple is not going to produce anything that looks like anything Samsung manufactured.

I'm in.
My doubts over possibly 'jumping ship' have vanished if this article is correct.
I wont be upgrading straight away as I will want a screen protector and backing case.
OLED - curved display - zero bazel - revamped home button - ideally 5" but not a deal breaker 4.7" would be fine.
Wireless charging - cherry on the cake.
Perfect for me.
I've not yet found anyone able to recommend a screen protector for these curved OLED panels that doesn't ruin the experience of them. I've tried flexible film solutions that at least adhere very well and gradually harden up to protect the display from scratches but I inevitably tire of the slight sparkly effect they cause that makes the high Rez screen look like a cheaper lower Rez screen.

For my Samsung phones I have used the smart cases that have covers on them. They are awesome and protect the phone well and permit wireless charging.

For people saying the curved screen serves no purpose, well it does. Samsung coded some functionality to the edge. However my use of the Smart case seems to render that feature inoperable. But without the case, the edge can be used as an always on alarm clock display at night. I think it has other notifications that scroll like a ticker but again, I don't use them due to my choice of case.

The Note 7 had a more refined Edge that really brought out the beauty of a curved edge display but minimized the annoyances and gimmicky look. I think an edge like the one on the Note 7 is what you would be likely to see on an iPhone rather than the kind on the S7 Edge.

I love how they take gs8 rumors and spin them as iPhone 8 specs.all these specs were rumors of the gs8.

the screen having its sensors built into it are gs8 rumors, the ability to scan your fingerprint on screen is a gs8 rumors, foldable display is a gs8 rumors

a these specs talked about in this stupid article are spec rumors that have been released about the gs8 weeks ago

you guys spin this **** all the time.

And yet when the GS8 is announced on this sites front page months before the next iPhone, the many on here will accuse Samsung on merely copying the Apple rumours......

are kidding me? even you said apple was rumored about curved screens in the iPhone 6s.what do you have to say about Samsung showing off working curved screen before the iPhone 5 while the iPhone 4 was out? read posts there is at least 4 threads with topics about the gs8 copying apple rumors that are vaporware.

Interesting read thanks for sharing.
I wonder what the solution will be, if any, as protecting the screen from scratches is important to me.

We hear about great features every year that ultimately never materialize due to poor yields or "being not ready yet". It may even be more telling to read about last year's rumors.

I've yet to use a phone with a colour accurate OLED, and I've owned the Pixel XL, Samsung 7 edge and Huawei mate 8.
Quite a lot of phones. Apple would love to get you into the fold, but I doubt they build the iPhone FOR people like you.

Move along, nothing to see here folks.
It's just another 'magical' feature to get you to upgrade your iPhone which is probably just fine.

I'm sure it'll be the best iPhone yet.
And probably can't be any uglier than my iPhone 6. :)

What was said rumors about the curved screen started when the 6s was released.

As a kid, in the 1960s I remember going to movies that had a curved projection screen. The concept of curved screens is not new and if you want to play the game, who had it first, the concept was not originated by Samsung. Here is something from 2012: http://newatlas.com/curved-lcd-contact-lenses/25312/

The display being bendable doesn't mean that it's just going to light up the sides a bit like the Galaxy. Apple could use this OLED's flexibility to push the regular display area right to the edges of the face of the phone, and do a lot more. They could use touch sensors on the sides for squeeze gestures (force touch), double tapping the left edge to go back, and other new gestures and forms of input.

read the thread title.apple using OLED and NEW touch sensitive screen.that new touch sensitive screen is the new screen Samsung made with the sensors built in to save money and space.its a known galaxy s8 rumor and was talked about.this site took that gs8 rumor and spun it as a new feature the iPhone 8 might have.they are spreading bs.

this thread title should be next galaxy is rumored to have new curved OLED with new touch technology built in so you can use the screen as a fingerprint reader.
[doublepost=1482071484][/doublepost]now you move the goal posts.this has nothing to do with what u just said because Samsung invented the curved OLED.

I don't like the idea of limiting new features and inventions to an even higher end iPhone... They should be available to all iPhone models. We don't need a 4th remodel of the iPhone 6 next year

My guess is that the "pro" model is there as a backup plan in case Apple can't get enough oled displays or some other critical component to outfit all their iPhones. Remember - the iPhone is expected to ship in tens of millions just for the weekend alone and this is way more than any one company can supply. Even Samsung.

If all goes well next year and Apple can source sufficient parts, then the "pro" model becomes the normal iPhone model and all' well.

That's where I did see the 1B figure.:apple:

Okay thank you, with that in mind can we agree there are not that many iphone 3 original to say iPhone 5 being used and therefore the 1B is far less.
I understand there have been many units sold since the July 27th '16 impressive landmark.
I like to think its 750M, the more the better, but that figure seem optimistic to me.
375M far too low, 750M too high so 500-600M approx in use IMHO
I guess only apple will ever know the true figure.

I don't quite get what you mean? Are you saying that there are quite a lot of colour accurate OLED phones? If so which ones?

I've had every iPhone (not S models) since the first one so I would say iPhones are for me. One of the main reasons that photographers traditionally use apple is the fact that they are all using the same very accurate colour out of the box allowing us to use iPads, iPhones, MacBook Pro and the sadly now discountinued Thunderbolt Display and getting the same result on all of them.

I've yet to see an accurate OLED screen but still hoping Apple will be able to pull it off.

Even if as you suggest, these types of rumors, imo, do not do anything for apple, as much as targeted advertising would do. The old cliche "any publicity even bad publicity is good publicity" doesn't really apply to this types of reporting on fan based sites especially MR with such a large and varied user base. In fact here, it seems the discussion, at least in this thread, devolves quickly. And I thank you for the civil discourse.

Edge to edge glass with no bezel or home button would be awesome.
No it really wouldn't, its yet another example of form over function. The physical home button is extremely convenient, and many many people refer it over a software button. Even if the button is the entire bottom bezel, it's better than a software one in my opinion.

So the OLED displays are plastic??? That isn't going to feel near as good as glass I have to imagine.

And if that is the case, I wonder how or if the glass screen protector companies can help?

"The OLED version of the new iPhone will all be curved as Apple ordered all plastic OLED -- not glass -- from Samsung Display. "

maybe you should go read a few credible screen review sites.starting with the note 4 or 5 the Samsung oleds have been the best calibrated screens you can buy.

the actual OLED screen is flexible plastic.the screen you are touching has glass over it.you won't be able to tell the difference.
