Am I the only one who is worried about the upcoming fragmentation? They say it's a Premium iPhone. I thought we already have premium with premium prices? I have no doubt that this version will cost at least 1000$ which will be a ridiculous price.

Sad to see ongoing fragmentation of their products.
Tim Cook loves fragmentation because it means:
a) Opening more markets.
b) More money.

Just look at what he did after he took over. He almost immediately started work on the iPad mini and a year after he took over, the larger iPhones. The only lineup that's in the process of being simplified is the Mac lineup, but that's because Tim Cook couldn't care less. He really has no passion for a lot of Apples products.

maybe you should go read a few credible screen review sites.starting with the note 4 or 5 the Samsung oleds have been the best calibrated screens you can buy.
I've not used any of those so I can't comment on it, but please send the link to those reviews. All reviews I've seen have always placed iPhones at the top when it comes to colourless accuracy.

This is what Displaymate has to say about the iPhone 7 in comparison to all other smartphones.

The iPhone 7 matches or breaks new Smartphone display performance records for:

• The Highest Absolute Color Accuracy for any display (1.1 JNCD*) – Visually Indistinguishable from Perfect
• The Highest Absolute Luminance Accuracy for any display (±2%) – Visually Indistinguishable from Perfect
• Very Accurate Image Contrast and Intensity Scale (with Gamma 2.21) – Visually Indistinguishable from Perfect
• The Highest Peak Brightness Smartphone for any Average Picture Level APL (602 to 705 nits)
• The Highest Contrast Ratio for any IPS LCD display (1,762)
• The Lowest Screen Reflectance for any Smartphone display (4.4 percent)
• The Highest Contrast Rating in High Ambient light for a Smartphone for any APL (137 to 160)
• The Smallest Color variation with Viewing Angle

Don't get me wrong though, I'm not bashing anyone or praising Apple for that matter, I'm just saying that for me colour accuracy is important and I'm still waiting for an OLED display that is as good as what I need. I'm sure it will be sorted eventually. Also, a lot of the time with android phones the over saturation is a deliberate thing to fool customers into thinking the screen is "better" as it is so vivid and vibrant. That's all fine for playing games etc but not for professionals who require a phone that also serves as a tool.

the funny part is Samsung out calibrated apple way back with the note 4 but you said you have never seen or heard about OLED being color accurate and talk about photographers while the Samsung's have a Adobe photo spec screen mode that was litteraly 100% perfect 1:1 nailed it to perfection and now you bring up the iPhone 7 that just came out to finally match the note 4 from years ago.

PS the note 5 still beat the iPhone 7 it hit a 1.4 but your eye can't tell the difference.they are using sensors to measure the accuracy.

PSS I don't see displayed mate saying the iPhone breaking records.here is a snip from the note 7.

I keep failing to reconcile the weirdness of Samsung being a major supplier to Apple for the product line over which they're at open war. No explanation of subdivision compartmentalization, agreement structures, or privacy clauses will make that relationship seem less weird.
Apple is not a fan of Apple. Apple is a business. Samsung is an "enemy" of Apple fans, not Apple. It's business, plain and simple. In business, companies work together all the time while competing with each other. Apple competes against LG, Sony, Samsung, Sharp, etc. All of those companies are suppliers as well. Automotive companies compete yet they share parts and technologies all the time.

When you cease to view business relationships through fan lenses, the relationship will lose it's weirdness.

You're absolutely right, but "a) Opening more markets" means: open more markets for rich people. Cook couldnt care less about "regular folks". Watch Edition for +10k$, iPhone Plus, the new MacBook "Pros" (entry level) which are supposed to replace the MBA, no new iMac, Mac mini, Mac Pro,... . The same iPhone design for +2 years. iPad "Pro" which is basically an iPad Air 3 (but with a nicer price tag ;) ). I am pretty sure that +95% of all Macrumors members here could have done a better job than him. Easily.

So much wrong right now. Shareholders are satisfied. With time, customers won't be, therefore shareholders won't be.
His primary focus should be customer satisfaction. Happy customers are loyal customers. Instead he tries to squeeze out every penny he can get. He should leave the company immediately.

iPhones are getting stale for me, and maybe I mean phones in general. None of these rumors have me excited, except for OLED. But if they limit it to the so-called high-end model, then I'll just keep my 6S for another year until they come to their senses. I'm not comfortable with my iPhone costing just as much as my MacBook Pro.

Wow talk about jumping to conclusions, do people forget that Steve Jobs hand picked Tim Cook to take over. I'm not being funny and I'm not having a go at anyone in particular, but Jobs has died and the company is moving on, times change. However I still believe along with a lot of other people, that Apple still make great products and has a great ecosystem.
Ever since Jobs died it has been the same old doom and gloom articles, posts on forums and general moaning that it's starting to get a bit tiresome.

I have 6S plus 128 Gb, an awesome phone. Couldn't make myself to to buy 7, though the camera is truly great (I tried friend's 7 plus). But 8 might be a good buy

However much I like the idea of a higher resolution screen, I've yet to use a phone with a colour accurate OLED, and I've owned the Pixel XL, Samsung 7 edge and Huawei mate 8. They are all too oversaturated with either a green or blue bias to the white balance and as a photographer colour accuracy is far more important than a few more pixels. Currently using a 7 plus and to me that is by far the best screen out there. I truly hope that Apple manages to make OLED tech better and that the colour issues can be solved in software and is not a hardware problem. I personally think colour problems is the main reason Apple hasn't already changed to OLED, that and the fact that 401px is more than enough...
Respectfully, I will say you didn't know how to use that S7 Edge. Samsung has had, according to Displaymate, the best screens for the last few years; regardless of LCD or OLED tech. They have 4 different modes for differing user tastes. The two that may have been of interest to you are Basic (color accurate) and AMOLED Photo (larger RBG Color Gamut and subsequently moved on to P3).
As a photographer you very well know, if you don't know how to use your tools properly then you won't get the desired results. That doesn't mean something's wrong with the tool. The color issues have largely be solved.

Great post thanks for sharing.

So do apple rely more on Samsung or do Samsung rely more on apple, or it a symbiotic relationship - about equal?

Also any idea of how many Samsung components make up the iPhone 7 and SE range?

and are there many Samsung components in Macs?

Thanks

Can't wait for the 10th anniversary edition iPhone. Should be the one we have expected over the last few years.

Gonna be a tough one for the accessories department. Already having issues with glass screen protectors on the 6,6S and 7 as it is.

No it really wouldn't, its yet another example of form over function. The physical home button is extremely convenient, and many many people refer it over a software button. Even if the button is the entire bottom bezel, it's better than a software one in my opinion.
Android software you mean. Because if the Iphone 7 is a sign of software buttons I'm loving it
