Apple's high-end OLED iPhone 8 will use a curved display rather than a flat panel and could potentially feature new touch-sensitive technology, according to a report published on Sunday.

Multiple sources have claimed Apple is planning a 5.5-inch "premium" version of its 2017 iPhone with an OLED screen alongside new models with traditional LCD displays, but today's report underlines Apple's intention to use a curved screen similar to that found in Samsung's Galaxy S7, which has been described as having the best smartphone display on the market.

Previous rumors outlining Apple's intention to launch multiple iPhone models have been dogged by suggestions that it could delay adoption of OLED technology entirely due to supply constraints. Samsung is Apple's sole supplier of OLED displays in 2017, with LG and Sharp among the companies tapped to ramp up production for 2018, but the latest report indicates that limited supply may indeed shape differentiation in next year's 10th anniversary iPhone line-up.

According to the Herald, Samsung's curved OLED capacity for Apple is estimated at around 70 million to 100 million units. That's in line with previous estimates, but it's less than half of Apple's annual sales of the iPhone series, which stand at around 200 million units a year.

The paper's source goes on to state that next year's iPhone won't be foldable, but in order to set it apart from Samsung's phones it could feature new sensing technology which "enables the phone to respond when users touch any side of the device". No further details are forthcoming, but the source notes that Apple may ultimately choose not to adopt the technology.

Other rumors suggest Apple's major iPhone redesign could include wireless charging and a glass body, no physical Home button, and an edge-to-edge, bezel-free display with embedded Touch ID fingerprint sensor and camera.

9 more months to go... I wish it would be released sooner. I am so excited.

Still holding out hope for a ~4.7 inch screen packed into an iPhone 5 size body :)

Yes.

I like the physical size of the iPhone 5 far more than that of the 6S I use now, but love the larger screen size of the 6S.

I grow more and more nervous every month that the only way to get the anniversary iPhone and all of the fabulous tech inside of it, is to switch to the larger iPhone.

I understand size constraints with some of the hardware features, but the actual tech like OLED, processors, and cellular modems should be available to all of us that don't want to carry around a device as large as the "Plus" series.

Agreed 100%.

It seems like such a messy thing to do, something that customers would find highly un-pleasing, but I can see them doing it anyway in the name of profits.

I'm also a litter nervous, knowing I won't be upgrading away from my 6S next year unless there's a 4.7" in a new form factor with some/all of these new hardware features.

I beg you Apple: please don't ruin your line of phones for me like you ruined your line of computers!!!

I'll believe it when I see it. Fully expecting Apple to release some garbage iPhone 7 rehash next year and let absolutely everybody down, including all analysts and tech journalists everywhere. They'll be a laughing stock.

The 16GB model of the premium phone will come only in Zune brown only and ship with BT4.

The higher tier model will include a camera and 420p facetime camera will be available in Rosebud platinum color. The higher end models will not have a lightning jack or any type of jack, as well as a departure from external speakers. It will ship with 126GB.

A newer, more expensive version of Airpods will be launched aside the top tier model and will not be compatible with any other models.

Because of the lack of the lightning port Apple will discontinue the ability to sync or back up to local disks or macs.

This will coincide with an iCloud pro announcement. The phone will be exclusively controlled by Siri's award winning voice controls. Touch support will be dropped and it will make some waves.

The lower end models will retain the lightning port but remove the IP68 water resistant ratings. The premium models are rumored to be water proof to 50 meters although this will not be covered under warranty whether it is explicit or implied through various forms of advertising.

The iPhone SE will be replaced be some yet to be determined version of the iPod touch.

The most interesting development is that TouchID on the latest models will require the user to enter in all 10 of their fingerprints.

It is rumored to be water proof to 50 meters although this will not be covered under warranty whether it is explicit or implied through various forms of advertising.

The latest iDemand sync technology will only be supported on the early 2017 TB MBP. The old TB MBP will be discounted by $19 through the educational program. Refurbs will be available for $9.95 more than that.

I thought the iPhone was a premium product and I thought the Plus was the premium of it—guess I was wrong.

Who cares about the display? What kind of dongles do I get to buy to make it fully functional?

No it really wouldn't, its yet another example of form over function. The physical home button is extremely convenient, and many many people refer it over a software button. Even if the button is the entire bottom bezel, it's better than a software one in my opinion.

It's going to happen. I'm sure Nokia would love to hear your ideas?

And very easy to smash.

Yeah you're right. They should make the screen from plastic or wood.

maybe you should go read a few credible screen review sites.starting with the note 4 or 5 the Samsung oleds have been the best calibrated screens you can buy.
Maybe out of the box. OLED still suffers from color shift, burn-in, and poor daylight performance.

the actual OLED screen is flexible plastic.the screen you are touching has glass over it.you won't be able to tell the difference.
So the plastic display screen + glass will be thicker? That doesn't seem good.

Haha, thanks for the laughs! The most worrying thing is, you're probably not far off the truth! 'The iPhone SE will be replaced by the original iPod touch. Because COURAGE'

The home button is being integrated with touch screen technology not replaced with a 'fake'. This year's model is a step closer.

Removing the switches and buttons IS logical. It will improve the water resistance. We might see this phone advertised as being able to capture photos under water.
Yeah but there's a problem with removing physical buttons and replacing them with touch sensitive ones like the new home button. On the iPhone 7, Apple has changed the way you hard reset from holding down the home and power buttons to holding down the power and volume down buttons because the new home button wouldn't work when the phone is off. So they need to have at least one physical button to turn on the phone when it is completely off, and they would probably have to make you hard reset some other way.

OLED is awesome.
curved is just gimmick.

The "edge panel" functionality is the greatest UI feature I've seen in a smartphone and i can't go back to a phone that doesn't have it.

The edge display news ticker and glows when people call/message are fantastic but not must have's.

I don't like the idea of limiting new features and inventions to an even higher end iPhone... They should be available to all iPhone models. We don't need a 4th remodel of the iPhone 6 next year

Get use to it. They've done it with the iPad and MBP. Expect iPhone7 to remain and for it to command the same price while next years version will be $100+ more. Why? Because it's "Pro".

The old white men at Apple can F off.

Tim: " Phil, can we use the "short supply" stuff again with this new phone ? "

Phil: " Absolutely, they haven't caught on after 6 years!!"

I'm not going to argue with you, but Apple went oled with their Watch. I'd say it has the best daylight performance of any Apple screen I've ever seen. Haven't heard or read of burn in complaints either. I say this all only to point out that they seem to have made a product without the "typical" issues assiciated with the tech.

My guess is that the "pro" model is there as a backup plan in case Apple can't get enough oled displays or some other critical component to outfit all their iPhones. Remember - the iPhone is expected to ship in tens of millions just for the weekend alone and this is way more than any one company can supply. Even Samsung.

If all goes well next year and Apple can source sufficient parts, then the "pro" model becomes the normal iPhone model and all' well.

If apple can't supply enough, maybe apple should build up a supply instead of rushing them for September. Start selling in October.

OLED.
Curved.
Still 1080p.

There is nothing wrong with 1080p in a smartphone, except that Apple will be charging a premium price. I have no problem with 1080p in a $450 smartphone.

Years ago I had a computer case with all capacitive buttons. I imagine it's doable in phones too, there would just be a larger drain in the battery when completely off. The question is how big a drain and whether this is an actual issue for the average user.

As far as restore mode, Apple already has a proprietary method for their watches. I'm not suggesting that route but it could potentially be as simple as plugging into a computer and having iTunes do it. I can't think of any reasons to NEED to get into dfu without also having a computer handy.

Of course there are and will always beninherent issues with software buttons, namely them not working when or as intended.

Let's play a game: Name the useful feature Apple will nix from the iPhone 8 in order to achieve "thinness"? Smaller battery? Reduced speaker? No volume buttons? Discard the telephone features altogether? Hmmm ... the possibilities.
