13 Air, is the i7 worth the upgrade or just buy i5 256gb on amazon?

I am curious if all I do is wmware, pictures uploading, internet, Facebook, chat, Skype, is the i7 upgrade worth it or just get the i5 256gb on amazon?

I got my dad a Kindle today and clicked on the email me the code link but it has been an hour and I still have not received the code yet. Is anyone else having the same problem?

Everyone I've seen report on it has gotten the email almost immediately. Mine came within a few seconds.

I would call Amazon customer service.

Anandtech has the i7 being roughly 8% faster than the 1.7 i5. It's not worth it imo.

So I got the base 13 inch yesterday, it says delivery estimate is August 31-September 16, what are the wait times for other people?

I guess I'll be using my girlfriends 15 inch MBP whilst I wait.

The Savings Must Include Sales Tax...

Just ordered my base 13" Macbook Air for 987. Saved 400 dollars over buying it from the Apple store!

... and it must be a 256GB drive model, not the base 13".

A 13" MBA with a 256GB drive is $1594-$319= $1275.

13" MBA 128GB is $1235-247= $988

11" MBA 128GB is $1140-228= $912.

Prices listed on 8/7/11. I rounded them up...

I think he was including tax

Is that before or after you include the taxes that would have been added at the Apple Store?

That's including taxes I would have paid at the apple store. There is one right down the road from where I live and the sales tax here is 7%. Thus I would have paid around 1380ish.

Just ordered mine a couple of hours ago. My wait time is the same.

However, I say this week amazon will get shipments in from apple and it will be here soon for us

How can Amazon afford to give this discount?

> How can Amazon afford to give this discount?

a) At 20% discount, Amazon is basically giving away the laptop at cost. No loss or profit.

b) But they are building up their kindle base for more book and deal sales down the road. A majority of the people will not return their Kindles because someone or the other in the family likes it. Or sheer lethargy. And many of them will buy something else using the special deals.

c) The more special offer kindles sold, the larger the audience Amazon can claim and use for negotiation with advertisers.

d) Kindle special offers will likely tie into the "amazon groupon like daily deal" whenever it publicly comes out. Multiply the effect on (b) and (c). Amazon is basically using Kindle to grow it's customer base and marketing clout.

e) Amazon is probably not losing money on the Kindle but this is also a good way to get rid of their current stock before the rumored "kindle tablet" comes out in Sept/Oct.

f) In general, think of all of the awesome 20-25% deals as no/low profit deals that tie in a customer. I am guessing you won't see many of these once Amazon has an established base.

g) Build goodwill with customers. Don't ya all love Amazon now? :)

All in all, excellent marketing.

> For the poster asking about Macbook Air i5 v/s i7 ?

Here's what the bench marks have to say.

On 11 Air - big difference and worth it. But machine will run hotter.
On 13 Air - about 10% difference, won't notice it in real life.

I'm going to be buying another Kindle as my wife and I have been fighting over the one I bought on Friday. Reading on these things is awesome, so much better than on my iPad.

If you are willing to help subsidize the purchase of my wife's Kindle let me know what you would like to trade for the code. PM me and I will try and get back to you as soon as I get back from the store which should be around 4:30pm Pacific time.

BTW, not really looking for money since if I wanted to do that I could just eBay it. Of course if the right offer came along I would do it but figuring if someone has some Mac accessories they want to get rid of we can work something out. A case for my 11" Air or maybe a used Magic Trackpad? I'm open to offers.

My guess Amazon is still taking a fairly big loss in the short run. I think I've read that Apple only gives something like 5% or 10% discounts to 3rd party retailers. I know it's far below what other manufacturers give.

I'm not saying it's a bad business decision. Amazon has analysts who can determine in advance what such a promotion will cost and they obviously feel it's worth it.

What is a bit surprising is Apple allowing it. They're so tight with what they allow retailers to discount and this is the largest percentage I can ever remember (for current models).

Mine said the same thing when I ordered it Friday and today it changed to shipping soon. Estimated arrival August 10th. 11" 4GB 128SSD

The 11" models seem to be shipping fairly quickly. I haven't seen the same thing happen with the 13's. I ordered on Saturday and I'm still showing Aug 31-Sept 16. I'm sure it will be sooner than that but not nearly as quick as your 11".

Also, it's odd that your shipping would change on a Sunday. I would be surprised if Amazon gets large deliveries on Sundays.

I thought the same thing. I got the email at 11:22am PST. It doesn't say it was shipped, it says it is shipping soon with an estimated delivery date of August 10th. I have Prime so maybe they know they are getting some in early this week???

thanks OP

Thanks OP. I bought a kindle from Target today and ordered a MBA 11/i5/128GB for my wife (2nd day with my Amazon prime). Even though current delivery date is far-off I am hoping to get the MBA before August end.

Also, I plan to keep the kindle as it's a wonderful eReader. Thanks Much.

Now this is crazy:

For people with the Kindle Special Offers from Amazon, they released a 20% off coupon that works on all the new Macbook Airs and Macbook Pros.

If you already have one: just go to the site and use your code:
Kindle Special Offer: 20% Off Laptops

If you don't have one, you can order today and email Amazon customer service to send you the code.

See: Amazon.com: Kindle with Special Offers

Anyway, this is the best deal I have ever seen on a Mac, so check it out!:eek:

Dumb question - I just bought the kindle special offer.
How do I get the code? (I've turned it on, checked out settings, etc)
I've checked all through the kindle special offer on Amazon, and it doesn't say anywhere how to get a code other than you will get special offers through your kindle.
Do I need to register it with amazon? I don't really want to as I will probably sell it - or can the registered user name be erased

You need to register it to your Amazon account. Then go to the menu - view special offers.
