The switch from Lightning to USB-C would almost certainly cause an uproar among at least some Apple customers, who already had to replace their docks, cables, and other accessories when Apple switched from its 30-pin dock connector to Lightning back in 2012.

Time to go Android next time anyways so...

Again, you seem to misunderstand the difference between authentication and action. With Face ID, authentication is automatic but action is still deliberate.

Face ID will authenticate you for a purchase but your action to complete the purchase is still deliberate. Face ID will authenticate you at the lock screen but it won’t take you to the home screen. The word “unlock” appears to mean different things to people who misinterpret this.

As for Touch ID, there’s a well known history of it doing things without your permission, such as buying $99 In App purchases. I’ve also had Touch ID automatically purchase something as I pressed the Home button to get out of a site because the button and Touch ID are shared. This can’t happen in Face ID because again, authentication is automatic but action is deliberate.

Someone picks up my phone, "hey look at this", I look, phone is authenticated, they swipe up and bingo.
Someone taps on my screen to wake my device, I look over to see why my screen has lit up, it authenticates, they swipe up and bingo.

That's more secure than trying to dupe me into putting my finger on the home button TouchID or under screen TouchID sensor?

That's not taking into account the other points, of having to pick up your phone and look at it at the right angle for it to authenticate, or to have to dislocate your shoulder to look at your device to unlock it while running/in the gym.

Going to usb C would also require lots of people to switch their headphones again...unless they make a dongle for a dongle for a dongle

I am sure you don't need a dongle for bluetooth and if you are still using the legacy jack you are swapping one dongle for another.

I don't see why they would return to using Touch ID, even if only in addition to Face ID. I have a 7+ (from a 6 and a 5s before that) and Touch ID has literally never been consistent. I have to use a passcode 80% of the time anyway to unlock my phone. Though it works almost every time once the phone is unlocked within apps that have it enabled.

I would certainly like the ability to have both Face ID and the option of Touch ID in-screen. But I’m sure these new phones will still be priced too high for most.

What I suspect is, if the revenue gets worst in Apple’s eyes over the next quarters in 2019, they will choose to something dramatic.

I am betting the following:
- Jump on 5G soon or mid cycle
- Smarller notch
- USB C

- Cheaper entry price. iPhone X series might go down to
* $799 XS
* Max 899
* XR at 699,
* original iPhone X reintroduced at $599,
* original XR $499,
* iPhone 8 $399,
* iPhone 7 $299

Or, just accept there is market saturation.

XR $600
2019 X $700
2019 X Max $800
As much as I would love to see prices go down that low, that is likely never to happen.

Recent iPhones have been tested to draw up 18 W of power while charging. (Some) Android phones can go higher than that. However that difference is significantly smaller than pre-USB-PD vs 18 W. One might also factor in that Android phones tend to have a larger battery for a similar battery life than iPhones, meaning their higher power draw doesn't translate 1:1 into a faster charging time.

Right. That's yet another byproduct of iPhones having better battery life. So while Apple's batteries may be smaller, they last longer. And since they adhere to USB-PD now, the battery cells will last longer than all of these hokey quick charging schemes that Android OEMs make up.

There is also the option of an iPhone 8 SE which would allow them to offer a cheaper phone with current innards.

Man I hope so. I'd love an updated SE (but it still needs to retain that form factor; I have to be able to use my 5S cases on it).

Please bring on USB C!!! The cable madness that the current situation requires on journeys is driving me nuts!

All of those things would be awesome, but how about one thing:

NO MORE PWM !!!!

Stop harming our eyeballs!!!

Touch ID on the back of the phone would be great. No problem for me on a GS9. Then a wide forehead and narrow chin. It looks fine on primates.

Stop exaggerating. Not very many Lightning-port headphones were sold. It's an ultra-niche product.
Indeed, the only ones I've seen are a Beats model and some other - in store. Apple was banking correctly on people moving to bluetooth, or like a lot of users just using the earpods that come in the package.

These guesses aren't a stretch tbh. What would make 2019 iPhone compelling?

Add A13 CPU, USB-C, smaller notch (smaller notch looks way better than a goofy looking O-hole), improved battery, more colors, fast charger in the box, iOS13, tri-camera, improved camera software, improved front camera, 1GB more RAM, faster and better performing FaceID AND keep prices in check:

$750/850/950 for new 11R, 11S, 11Max

At least one new iPhone released in 2019 will sport a USB-C port, smaller notch, and the return of Touch ID under the display, according to Jean Baptiste Su, Vice-President and Principal Analyst at consulting firm Atherton Research.

Su shared his prediction in a Forbes column about Apple lowering its revenue guidance for the first quarter of its 2019 fiscal year:This is the first Apple rumor we've ever heard from Su, and the Forbes contributor network has published its fair share of questionable content about Apple in recent years, so treat this rumor with a healthy dose of skepticism. Many analysts not named Ming-Chi Kuo simply make guesses -- and not always educated ones.

Let's imagine these features prove to be true, though, and examine what that would mean for the next iPhone:USB-C: For many years, critics believed Apple would never switch to USB-C on its iOS devices, and then it did exactly that with the 2018 iPad Pro. Will the iPhone follow suit this year? Notorious supply chain publication DigiTimes seems to think so, so Su is not alone in his prediction.With many of the latest Macs equipped with USB-C or Thunderbolt 3 ports, which share the USB-C connector design, moving from Lightning to USB-C on the iPhone would create one primary I/O standard across not only Apple devices but hundreds of other electronics.The switch from Lightning to USB-C would almost certainly cause an uproar among at least some Apple customers, who already had to replace their docks, cables, and other accessories when Apple switched from its 30-pin dock connector to Lightning back in 2012.It's also worth considering that Apple has emphasized a wireless future, so one possibility is that the Lightning connector sticks around until there is no connector whatsoever.
Touch ID under the display: This one is hard to believe. Face ID is more secure than Touch ID and seems like Apple's authentication method of choice going forward, starting with the iPhone X and expanding to the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR last year.Kuo agrees, noting that Apple doesn't plan to return to Touch ID in any capacity with its 2019 iPhone lineup back in September.
Smaller notch: This one is certainly plausible. As the iPhone design continues to evolve, Apple will surely find ways to reduce the size of the notch, even if only by a fraction of a millimeter.
It's only January, so we're still early in the rumor cycle about 2019 iPhones. Over time, we should get a clearer picture about what to expect from more reputable sources like Kuo. To date, we've heard the next versions could feature a triple-lens rear camera, Face ID improvements, slightly thinner displays, and more.

There were no lines with the original iphone ;)

Don't know where you got that from the day it was launched people were camped out. Anyway I was being facetious about this phone. If this is all they have they had better get ready to deeply deeply deeply discount the price.

They should take a look at Xiaomi's Mi Mix 3 with 93,6% screen to body ratio.
There should be the possibility to reserve some amount of the internal ssd to be used as a secure external usb-disk without any need of additional software for macos, linux or windows.

Touch ID would be great for added security when combined with FaceID. It makes no real sense any other way when FaceID works so well now without further development. FaceID is only going to get quicker and more powerful.

While showering this morning.... (the only place where I stumble across near genius ideas)

I realized that there is one very plausible iPhone design change that would be a deal breaker for me; adding a third camera in the vertical position. Why you ask? To me, my parents, my wife, and half of my friends, the most important feature of a cell phone these days isn't the phone or the new tech inside. It is having the option of using a protective case with an integrated card slot for 2-3 cards on the rear. Not the large clunky folding folio wallets mind you, the slim and simple ones like the Speck Presidio Wallet Case or the Silk Wallet case. Every day, I ride my bicycle to work, I pull the smallest iPhone that Apple now makes, which is now too big for my even for my large hands to confidently wield in one hand, nearly drop it due to it's odd weight, and then press the rear of wallet case against a proxy card reader at the bicycle cage. I then continue to do this 15 more times as I traverse through the work place. Laugh away, but not having to carry a separate wallet in my jeans is ultra important to me. If I could just wear an Apple Watch and interact with touch screen monitors with the watch acting as the brain, my life would be perfect. Even my wife, who is so loyal to the SE form factor, demands this card case feature, because it's the only shape left that is big enough to carry 3 cards in a case, but not so huge to require a large fanny pack just to squeeze the rest of the screen real estate into a waist belt while she jogs. She and half of her friends are totally ditching purses because of this convenience.

If an additional camera is added, it will remove the real estate necessary for people to carry cards on the rear of their phones. Android models with fingerprint sensors on the rear totally hosed themselves already, for those designs also clash with the rear card case design.

Until the police no longer require drivers to carry a license, and/or my employer doesn't require a badge to enter the building, I'll be basing my phone decisions on designs that allow me minimally carry a 2-3 plastic rectangles.

Solution? Put the upcoming myriad quantity of of camera lenses "horizontally" across the top instead.

Jeez, why does no one get what this guy is saying?

It’s not that there will be TouchID and, separately, FaceID!

No! It’s just that to unlock this future phone, you must touch your face!

Why’s that so hard to understand?

I could see it now! People walking around with their phones literally touching their faces more so than they already do. :D
