One Analyst Thinks the Next iPhone Will Have a USB-C Port, Smaller Notch, and Touch ID Under Display

Ming has been rather quiet with regards to 2019 iPhone. Normally we would have some news about 2019 iPhone even in 2018 October or November.

I guess Apple is weighing their plans with regards to sales.

  • iPhone should have both underscreen Touch ID and Face ID After reading post after post about people disliking either Touch ID or Face ID this is the only way to promote harmony
  • As for USB-c it’s it’s a toss up whether st this stage of the game it’s necessary it might cause more disharmony then good

TouchID and FaceID are redundant, IMHO.

It could be a selling point that iPhones are even more secure for payment transactions, where authentication is provided by both Face ID and Touch ID together, rather than just one of them. Currently with Face ID, don't you need to double-tap the side button to complete the transaction? That's required for authenticating with the App Store, and I find it awkward and annoying on the larger XR device. Usually requires two hands to complete that action properly vs. touching the screen.

“It will still lack the extensibility....battery life....and camera quality of the Android flagship phones....

Seriously? Has this guy even used an iPhone recently? The battery life is fantastic and only marginally beat out by *maybe* two or three Android phones, and the camera is one of the best on the market, with possibly only the Pixel 3 being better (and that is mostly software driven).

If he wants to hammer on the lack of a memory card slot feel free, but at least be genuine about it. The iPhone has never had one, and most likely never will. I don’t know a single person that has said “I’m not buying one because it doesn’t have a micro sd slot.”

That guidance sounds like an ad for Samsung.

Agreed! DxOMark recently rated the XR as having the best smartphone single-lens camera, too...

Some of these non-Apple users live in a bubble, seeing `everything Apple` through a negative lens.

Nope, Touch ID is not coming back. After Apple convinced customers that Face ID is superior and others have jumped on the Face ID bandwagon, Apple cannot bring Touch ID back. If they did, they'd end up with egg on their Face ID. #rimshot :D (thank you very much, I'll be here all week, try the veal it's the best, and don't forget to tip your waiter)

As much as I would love to see prices go down that low, that is likely never to happen.

I am not so sure. The next real upgrade is 5G and that's years off. Apple won't be able to sell this thing for $1,000 they tried that this year it failed. Next years buy will be this years phone at a huge discount. There is no way out of this for Apple now. Apple might do well to simply keep this years phone and drop the price rather than roll out some very minor release.

This won't even worth retooling for if they think they can get $1,000 for it. Lower prices and for the love of God use some of the $250 billion to get something going. It is becoming sort of clear they don't have the in house talent. Get as many iPhones as you can out there as Apple will never have the same kind of pricing power as in the past and fill them with services.

I am going to amuse myself by looking at the new target price for AAPL. Just when I thought owning some AAPL wasn't fun comes a tremendous buying opportunity in the next three months.

I bet Cook wish he didn't have to get out of bed today.

apple is doomed if they dont start making phones that users can afford..

I was able to get the XR at no up-front cost.... sure, my monthly rate went up by $15 because I had to choose a different data plan, but that's a carrier game, not Apple. However, I agree that it doesn't really leave consumers with much choice, because avoiding that monthly rate increase means buying the device at Apple's outrageous price.

didn't they also convince customers phones shouldn't be bigger than 5"? not the first time w/ egg on face. just saying

It was rumoured before, and I believe it's still going to happen.... rebirth of the SE with the design of the XR, only in a smaller 4" form factor, and a lower cost. The XR was merely the ground-breaking device, and now that the tech is proven, they will iterate and fit it into a much-needed smaller size.

No they don’t. Hence t
Apple adopt a industry standard AFTER everyone else? Swine will take flight before that day comes.
They only way Apple replaces Lightning if a new USB standard comes out and they adopt it first. They have a thing for being first.
No they don’t.

Portrait mode, and Animoji.... Memoji wasn't a thing when the X was launched
Well, if you want to do nitpicking, who says that eventual Memoji capability wasn't part of the motivation behind the FaceID sensor array?

But that aside, I don't think you could convince many people, if any at all, that an IR dot projector, IR flood light and IR camera were developed for the goal of Portrait Mode and Animoji. A simple second standard camera would have allowed for Portrait Mode (and only a year later they are able to do Portrait Mode with single camera anyway). Which leaves Animoji as the motivation for the IR stuff. And that Apple would develop extra hardware only for a comedic feature is so preposterous that it is hard to believe that anybody would be so obsessed about ascribing Apple such contorted internal reasoning.

And why not add another TouchID sensor on the back? Some people prefer that to one on the front.

That isn't the same thing. It's one thing to claim that no one wants a phablet and then produce one and another thing to remove something like the 3.5mm headphone jack or touch ID and then bring it back.

Are there others out there, like me, that just don't care anymore? Even mid range phones are more than good.

There in lies the problem for Apple. The next iPhone isn't going to be anything special. if they release an incremental upgrade even at a slightly lower price point than this years there are going to be a ton of people looking for used XS Max. It is possible Tim Cook has some master plan but a new Mac pro and Airpods V. 2 isn't it.

I guess Apple is weighing their plans with regards to sales.

I seem to remember that Ming gets his info from sources in the hardware supply chain, usually when the bulk orders are being being put through - so presumably for things like the camera and sensors, biometrics, chips, screens etc. And that’s how he then deduces the likely number, and sizes of new iPhones, along with a handful of their specs.

He is consistently the best of the rumour analysts.

So I would guess that the 2019 phones are still in prototype testing, with different features or designs, and orders are not yet in for large scale production of the the component parts.

Although he does sometime get it right very early, sometimes a whole year before release, so perhaps he gets info on the prototype designs too, when they are a form factor redesign.

Either way, I wouldn’t be surprised if we hear from him soon.............

......so who cares.....unless they drop prices and improve GUI they can keep it until my 6 dies or they make it obsolete

The irony in the situation is: if Apple would indeed bring all this to iPhones in 2019 and bring back a headphone jack as well - they will sell many more phones than if they do not (and only improve Face ID slightly).

Hopefully their greed will push them in the right direction this time around, although I really doubt that, since common sense looks to be absent in quite a few moves the company takes lately.

Hoping for the better though. Customers need to see and feel that iPhones give them pretty much everything that Android phones currently provide in one way or another. Feeling of being ”cheated” (like a slow charger in the box with iPhones, removing a headphone jack even on the iPads just to push AirPods sales etc etc...) while paying a huge premium will result in lost customers to Samsung and various chinese manufacturers.

Seriously, would you recommend an iPhone today to somebody who does not use macOS or not heavily invested in Apple ecosystem already? I hardly find any reasons too. Price / value / performance / features of some Android phones are just way way higher than they were just several years ago.

I hope Apple manages to take control of its ego and gives what people want in 2019 updates - a real feeling of value in the product without the greed poorly enveloped in the “courage” and “bright future” package.

Curious how Apple will explain what they said about Face ID is the future, Apple going backwards would be an interesting move
pfffft easy.

Apple claims that there is a 1 in 50,000 chance that someone else’s fingerprint will falsely unlock your iPhone and a 1 in 1,000,000 chance that someone else’s face will do it.
