So? How does that make the removal of the headphone jack any less stupid? .

And that;s one of the things I absolutely love. I completely understand that there plenty of ignorants out there who if it was for them we would still have computers with floppy disk and what not. Generally people are stupid (Einstein have an excellent quote on that) refuse changes and refuse to move with the times. But I really don't give a flying monkey, let them be in the shadows of the past. Using truly wireless AirPods for one year and a half makes going back to wired ones absolutely crazy crazy crazy!!

Correct me if I‘m wrong but AFAIR the Lightning to 3.5 is right in the box. I don‘t get why people are upset with plugging something into a cable adapter while they are perfectly fine with plugging the same cable into a Jack.
This. It's hilarious. They all pretend like they cannot use their wired headphones anymore, ignoring facts like the adapter being included with every new iPhones. It shows their mindset is purely just to hate.

Android consumes more RAM

MacOS consumes more RAM than an iPod. Does that make MacOS worse? No.

Same reason Android uses more RAM because it's closer to the power of a desktop OS while iOS uses less RAM because it's more like an iPod OS with much more limited backgrounded multitasking, no split screen multitasking, featureless UI where home screen icons can't be moved anywhere, etc.

Ah. So people gruntling at airplanes, music systems, presentation desks, mixing equipment, older audio systems are actually crying for floppy disks and should buy Airpods...and are too stupid to understand that they got a bigger taptic engine now.
Only Einstein will fully understand this (...appeasement of commercial fluff)

Still one of the stupidest decisions Apple has made-along with getting rid of Magsafe.
I will not buy another MacBook until they implement MagSafe again. Possibly never.
My MacBook would have been dropped many times if it wasn’t for the MagSafe power connector preventing it.

Bluetooth headphones on the other hand have replaced headphones with cables for me already before Apple removed the headphone jack. Once you had a good pair of BT headphones you will not want to go back to cables.

Only to increase sales of the AirPods. That damn adapter annoyed me enough into buying a pair. It's the reason why they don't remove it on iPads and Macs. No one listens to music on those so removing it won't force people to get AirPods.

Or it’s because of the fact that iPads don’t have the space issue the iPhone does. And no, I’m not talking about thickness. They didn’t need any help selling AirPods.

So what are you going to do when your Mac becomes obsolete or breaks?

You do realize Apple can get away with half the RAM because iOS is infinitely more optimized than Android?

Hope people would stop spreading ignorance and just read iOS developer docs on how backgrounded apps are managed.

This sums it up except 10 minute extension has been reduced to 3 minutes.

Imagine Tim Cook removing background multitasking from Macs so he can squeeze more profit by shipping only 2GB DRAM soldered in instead of 8GB.

funny... until you get your first brain tumor screen.
Want a tinfoil hat?

Trust me, a radiation induced brain tumor is really some risk I‘m willing to take.

OTOH why do you comment as you obviously don’t use a mobile at all...and no WiFi, no microwave and all the other radiation generating stuff.

And there goes the new iPhone signature: the notch. Now every Android looks the same as the iPhone (again)...
People cant stand being original. I dont hate the notch but I know why its there aside from physical design workarounds so I understand it but I just dont see why a company would copy that lol, many companies at that and more to come.

Hundreds of dollars in additional peripherals? Right.

The jack was removed because it took up a comparatively large amount of valuable real estate for a single-purpose, 1870s analog technology that was rendered redundant by the multi-purpose lightning hole right next to it. Are you also angry that automakers got rid of hand-crank starters in favor of easily lost or broken keys, which are now being replaced by even more expensive radio fobs that you might forget you left in yesterday’s pants? If you don’t like new technology, don’t buy it. It is still possible to use a rotary-dial landline phone to make and receive calls, and you can still buy a turntable and a tube amp with 1/4” headphone jacks galore, if that’s what you like.

If Bluetooth is the future and in particular Apple Airpods, (which by all accounts do not fall out even with the most vigorous of activities) why do on-stage performers not use Airpods or other Bluetooth earphones as their IEMs ?

Because those rooms are packed with devices sending and receiving all kinds of wireless signals that could interrupt a wireless connection, which is not acceptable if you are on stage. However for 99.9% of use cases it’s fine to use Bluetooth.

OnePlus today announced the launch of its latest flagship phone, the OnePlus 6, and the company couldn't resist taking yet another jab at Apple and its decision to remove the headphone jack from its flagship iPhones.

During the event, OnePlus introduced new $69 OnePlus Bullets Wireless headphones that are shipping alongside the new OnePlus 6. "Just one thing though. I wonder. If you can connect your earphones using Bluetooth, you don't need a headphone jack anymore, do you?" said Carl Pei, OnePlus co-founder.

Pei's headphone jack joke starts at 1:14:00

Pei was making a joke at Apple's expense, as despite the inclusion of Bluetooth headphones with the OnePlus 6, it continues to include a headphone jack. "And yes, there's still a headphone jack," Pei said during the unveiling of the OnePlus 6.

OnePlus made a similar joke on stage last year, after Apple eliminated the headphone jack from the iPhone 7 and the iPhone 7 Plus, a move that proved to be unpopular with some customers despite the introduction of the AirPods.Design wise, though it includes a headphone jack, the new OnePlus 6 takes other design cues from the iPhone X, like many Android smartphones this year. It features a 6.28-inch AMOLED display with minimal bezels and a notch at the top to house the front-facing 16-megapixel camera, along with a glass body. There are two vertically positioned cameras at the rear of the device.

Inside, the OnePlus 6 sports a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor, 6GB to 8GB RAM, and a minimum of 64GB of storage. It comes with facial recognition capabilities, which the company says uses more than 100 identifiers for security purposes, and it also features a fingerprint sensor at the back. Other features include support for dual SIM cards, fast charging, rain resistance, and the ability to run the latest versions of Android, including the current Android P beta.

Pricing on the OnePlus 6, which launches on May 22, starts at $529. The device is available in several colors, including Mirror Black, Midnight Black, and Silk White. The OnePlus Bullets will be available on June 5 for $69.

There is no such thing as a "notch". It's actually a pair of horns that make the display slightly taller along the edges, and then have an unusable section in the middle, where they stick goofy stuff like a camera. I can't imagine why Apple did this idiotic thing, and what's worse, now everyone is following them, lemming-like, and they're probably going to get sued for copying Apple's design. (In this case, it really is copying Apple's design and it's obvious that the design is distinctly theirs, and there really is no excuse for copying it, because there's no need to have it in the first place.) I wish instead of finding new and interesting ways to make their new phones more obnoxious than the old ones, they'd put that money into making the phones last longer, be harder to break, or improving the specs.

Apple having the "courage" (hahaha) to remove an important feature, (like the headphone jack,) or adding this stupid, ugly notch thing, (which annoyingly they are now requiring app makers to support so they can have the stupid horns sticking up on the sides of the useless part of the front...) and charging an obscene amount of money for the privilege of having one of these things is contributing to the perception in some circles that Apple is really and truly losing its mind.

Oh, and lest I forget, it's been over 1300 days since the last Mac Mini release. You remember the Mac Mini, right? It's the machine Apple's executives keep lying to us about, saying "it's an important part of the Apple Mac line..." or whatever?

Sure. It's so important that it's been YEARS since the last time it was even "updated" and that "update" was actually a DOWNGRADE, making me wonder if they're keeping it around as a joke. Anyone want to bet on how many more product updates and refreshes they announce before updating the Mini? I wonder if they'll manage to update every single part of the line while the Mini gets more and more pathetically obsolete. (I.e., they announce a new MacBook Pro, a new MacBook (Nothing), a new MacBook Air, a new iMac, a new ProMacIproiMacPro, a new iPad Pro 10.5, a new iPhone xI or Ix or Xi or X2 or whatever, a new iPhone Se 2, a new hOmePod or whatever... and the Mac Mini passes 1400 days... 1500 days... 1600 days...

Somehow, I doubt they're updating it again. Or if they do, it'll end up having all its ports removed but power and HDMI, and it will be called an AppleTV... oh, wait... they kinda already did that. (SIGH)

Sometimes you just need to progress! Wireless headphones/anything has HUGE advantages. And by keeping the jack promotes complacency in keep using it. Sometimes you just need to force people to use a better technology for it to really catch hold and literally push society forward. I congratulate apple and apologize for the people stuck in the past.

Before congratulating Apple for pushing into the wireless future you might want to take a look into any recent iPhone packaging: Apple still holds onto the “past”, shipping their products with wired EarPods. The only difference today is the use of a proprietary connector instead of the industry standard.

Bluetooth headphones/-sets have been around for years and people already adapted to them long before the iPhone 7. If someone still chooses wired over wireless, it’s most likely due to the current disadvantages of Bluetooth headphones/-sets (pricing, battery life, buzzing/humming, interference noises, microphone quality), not because one is opposed to technological progress.

I prefer the new connector. Headphone jack was 100 years old and it was ugly
Problem is - there is no new connector. You basically use the power port which means you can't be charging your device and listening to music at the same time. That's the case in my car. That's also the case in my office when I forget my adapter in the car. Unless you use bluetooth or airplay that is.

The numbers mean more people are ok with bluetooth. You are a minority of those who can't accept the inevitable wireless future. But it's ok. Manufacturers do not care about the minority.
Which numbers? I don't know anyone using bluetooth headphones. We have one crappy bluetooth speaker in the office and I have bluetooth on my hifi receiver at home but it gets little use.

Well done. Give that man a coconut :) So Bluetooth is inferior to a few feet of screened cable.

No idea, I have a 2015 model, I hope it will last a few more years.

It should last at least seven or so more OS updates. That seems to be the cutoff, roughly 9 or 10 years. That’s if they’re still making Intel Macs by then.

There is still an overhead of running managed code with automatic garbage collection versus non-managed native code with automatic reference counting (in spite of what Android Authority claim to have debunked flying in the face of decades of computer science knowledge). The process management models are different between iOS and Android - but this only explains why more resources are required overall - it does little to explain why a single process would consume more memory.

It isn't as simple as more RAM good, less RAM bad either. From an engineering perspective (as always) there are trade offs involved. As this informative post by Steven Sinofsky points out RAM can have a not insignificant impact on power (crucial for mobile):

Something that might not be obvious is that minimizing memory usage on low-power platforms can prolong battery life. Huh? In any PC, RAM is constantly consuming power. If an OS uses a lot of memory, it can force device manufacturers to include more physical RAM. The more RAM you have on board, the more power it uses, the less battery life you get. Having additional RAM on a tablet device can, in some instances, shave days off the amount of time the tablet can sit on your coffee table looking off but staying fresh and up to date.

I use Android, but I don't think it is clear cut which approach is "more powerful" or better. There are costs and benefits to both approaches.

Why would any design department be dumb enough to purposely follow apple with that stupid notch design?

What's stupid about it?

Space which would've been black bezels is now screen which shows status indicators like signal strength, WiFi, carrier name etc. And I never notice it in daily use. Seems like a sensible decision to me.

I prefer the new connector. Headphone jack was 100 years old and it was ugly

It would be nice however, if there were two ports, so you could have headphones, or something else in one port for the audio, and use the other identical port for charging.

Who cares?

Stupid people buy phones too. And for them, there is One Plus.

Whatever floats their boat. Let ‘em rootkit, install malware, and listen by wires all they want. Doesn’t hurt us.
