That's kind of disingenuous. If you really have that usage scenario, then don't use an iPhone 7 ... or get a new MIDI adapter at the same time as your phone. I could complain that my ProTools NuBus card doesn't work with my Mac Pro, too.

Uh, no. Disingenuous is claiming that the headphone jack had to be removed to make the iPhone water resistant/proof and thinner. Clearly, that is absolutely false since the OnePlus 6 has nearly identical dimensions AND a headphone jack.

I should not have to buy hundreds of dollars in additional peripherals because Apple wanted to squeeze everyone out of another $20 (when their lightning to headphone adapter breaks) or $170+ if they decide to get the Apple wireless headphones.

Did you compare with streaming?
Streaming is the largest now. I was pointing out that CDs are not over the hill and are making a recovery. For people wanting the higher quality source material, cd and vinyl are the way to go. 24 bit 192k is available, but at a high cost and low coverage.

Since using a driverless car I came to the conclusion that drivers weren't needed and now I decree that I am removing your steering wheel from your car. I don't care that you don't have the choice do drive if you want to, so long as I am ok because I don't like to drive and driverless is all I need.

Actually your sarcasm is EXACTLY what will happen. What use will there be for a steering wheel if the car drives itself? Of course we are far from that time yet, drivers still need to pay attention and emergencies happen. But there will come a day that driverless is so perfected it will actually be more dangerous if a human took over the wheel.

I don't think it's quite the same though for headphones. Personally I could care less, I've ditched primitive wires years ago and only use Bluetooth headphones. But at the same time don't care if headphone jacks stay on phones, as long as they don't take up valuable space and take away functionality like water resisting. Eventually they will fully go away.

Last year CD and vinyl outsold digital downloads.

And btw, pre-recorded cassettes were always poor quality compared to vinyl and cd.

Not to mention the fact that CDs and vinyl sound far superior to anything available for download on iTunes, Spotify, Slacker, Amazon, Pandora, etc.

Disingenuous is claiming the need to spend "hundreds" of dollars on adapters when the phone includes the adapter for standard headphones..

Except, the product is not "gimped" as you characterize it and no one is obligated to buy Apples bluetooth headset. You can get lightning headphones which clearly give better sound then audio jack headsets or if you feel "forced" into having to do that you have a adapter given to you to keep using your own old headphones. To say the reason for eliminating the jack just to make money on a so called solution is laughable and a really uninformed comment. When your looking for vital space inside a smartphone, the space used by the jack is useless.

There have been many A/B tests of the headphones plugged into the headphone jack and headphones plugged into the lighting jack using the same stock headphones that come with the iPhone. The differences stated in each test have been negligible.

You certainly would not hear the difference when listening to compressed audio.

Why would any design department be dumb enough to purposely follow apple with that stupid notch design?

Yeah, it really boggles the mind why an electronics manufacturer would follow the design language of the most profitable phone on the market. I just can't figure out why they'd be that 'dumb'...

Insecure people are always lacking in focus on what THEY are working on, too busy being distracted with needlessly mocking what they see as a threat (don't expect them to admit that, it takes humility, which often they lack IN SPADES).

Apple don't fret over these buzzing mosquitoes, they just laugh and brush them away.

"OnePlus"? Okay, so front up and show me ONE plus of owning your arrogance phone...

It's amusing how many people don't realise that putting others DOWN doesn't raise YOU, UP... no, they just want to drag the best down to their mediocre level, so they feel less threatened. How silly.

I'll wait... and wait... and wait...

I've been using bluetooth headphones on a day-to-day basis to avoid getting tangled up in cables.

But having had the batteries run out when being out for an entire day / longer travel days, I know damn well that the headphone jack is not obsolete.

So plug the headphones into a USB battery and continue using them. It's no different than plugging them into a phone.

They can actually sell more phone than they make.
They fix their numbers and don't build anymore than that.
They have sold out of all their last three phones.
They aren't trying to be Apple.

Right, that's why their flagship product has a notch in the screen, just like Apple. I'm sure that's just a coincidence.

Hundreds of dollars in additional peripherals? Right.

The jack was removed because it took up a comparatively large amount of valuable real estate for a single-purpose, 1870s analog technology that was rendered redundant by the multi-purpose lightning hole right next to it. Are you also angry that automakers got rid of hand-crank starters in favor of easily lost or broken keys, which are now being replaced by even more expensive radio fobs that you might forget you left in yesterday’s pants? If you don’t like new technology, don’t buy it. It is still possible to use a rotary-dial landline phone to make and receive calls, and you can still buy a turntable and a tube amp with 1/4” headphone jacks galore, if that’s what you like.

I am an avid runner and wireless headphones are great. However, sometimes I forget to charge my wireless headphones and on those days, when I go out for a long 2 hour run, I'm stuck with using my backup wired headphones. Being able to use the lightning adapter is acceptable but a 3.5mm jack is preferable in the event I lose or don't have my lightning adapter.

The point is, wired headphones, and therefore a 3.5mm jack, still have a place.

Leave the Lightning adapter plugged into your backup wired headphones. Problem solved. If you use BT headphones normally, and the Lightning adapter is acceptable, how often are you really going to lose the adapter and require the use of a 3.5mm jack?

People here seem to forget this thing called "options" and believe that if Apple doesn't dictate to them exactly how to operate their lives, something is missing.

Having a headphone jack doesn't preclude users from going 100% wireless. not having a headphone jack ins exclusionary and prevents those who need/want wired from easily using wired.

None of us who use wired primarily are claiming that Apple should remove wireless access to give us a headphone jack. However, those who love wireless are literally claiming that because they love wireless, we shouldn't have the headphone jack.

it's a perfect example of certian users trying to dictate that their own needs must be the needs of everyone else

Do you seriously not see the irony in that statement? The jack is already gone, so you're actually the one arguing that your needs should dictate the design of the phones for everyone else. Most of us have moved on.

so have I, the iPhone 5s was the last iphone I used and when recently shopping for a new phone, apple removed themselves from my list of devices that fit my needs.

No irony in the statement. And no, I didn't say MY needs dictate what you use. You are saying that. "I don't use a headphone jack, so you shouldn't either" is what you and Apple have siad

I said "I still want a headphone jack, including one in the device doesn't impact YOUR ability to use wireless, so why not include it still".

this ISN'T hard. where one set of features allows for 2 completely different connectivity methods, and the other set of features only allows for 1, the best option for more people is the one that has the two options.

I view the removal of the headphone jack in the same lens as Apple removing flash support from ios to help push html 5 and native iOS apps.

You are inconvenienced in the short run, but win out in the long run as more developers support the standard you wish to push for (really for lack of a better alternative).

So in short, removing the headphone does suck now (though I am personally indifferent to it) but I believe it will all be worth it in the future.

Flawed comparison. The difference between HTML 5 and Flash from the user perspective is non-existent. They deliver the same content on the same screen/device. The difference between wired/generic/cheap and BT/needs charging/proprietary solutions is substantial. Choosing one of the solutions in favor of another has inevitable negative implications for the user.

Remember, Apple always pushes toward the future and the future is wireless. They did emphasize that in their keynote. The removal of the jack was to push towards the future, it wasn't to make the phone thinner and water resistant. They did that with their Macbooks also... People were not using CDs anymore, so they took the CD-ROM off.

Guess what... iPhones supported wireless audio loooong before the iPhone 7. Removing the CD ROM had definite benefits because it did make notebooks thinner, lighter, and eliminated many mechanical components.

Since most people will use whatever headphones are bundled with the device, if Apple really just cared about making the wireless future a reality all they had to do was bundle Airpods.

Why do people keep throwing out the “Apple just wanted money” thing that has been debunked a thousand times?

Do you really think Apple has 50m plus AirPods sitting around?
