Well we now have offical apple warnings of stock shortages, rimes of new machines coming off the line for weeks, new promotional material arriving instores and new kb and mouse at the FCC.

Something is up, even if it is the same chassis with updates.

And we have one solid piece of information, the SKU for the low end Mac Mini has been discontinued, which means no Mac Mini low end! That is not going to fly long. There WILL be an update soon. Whether or not its dual core or quad core, I don't know, but there will be SOME kind of update in performancel, price and apparently, "thinness"! :)

Solid piece of info #2, the FCC pics of Apple's new keyboard and mouse. Followed by an immediate removal of said images by order of Apple.

Sooo...

Does the MBP get a speed bump in order to keep a reasonable gap between the MacBook and MBP? I have my fingers crossed for the 2.53 to move to the $1199 price.

Otherwise, I may just get this new Macbook.

probably in a year or so, couldn't be reduced that much now

Tomorrow?

Is there a chance that we could see the new Macs online tomorrow? If Apple stores have been getting shipments, then it MUST be soon! :D

Honestly, I've been reading these boards for more than a month now. I've been waiting to get a souped up iMac--was going to buy the 24" 3.06 with the hd video card, FCE preinstalled, a 160gig ipod, a printer, and the harmon kardon speakers, but because of all the speculation, I've waited. (Especially since I'm planning on things that will involve a lot of HD video editing, and I know if quad core is added it well help with speed) If you knew what POS windows junk I'm running right now, you would understand my impatience with this. You would also probably laugh at me hehe.

However, today I had a revelation. I believe it was one of the articles on this site that mentioned Apple's marketing is just deciding on when to drop the bomb, so to speak. Two things:

1. Despite naysayers on this board, it is an extremely smart move for Apple to not only have new Ipods, but new computers out for this holiday season. It will drive sales greatly.

2. Most importantly, I realized Windows 7 comes out on October 22nd. The smartest strategy for Apple, I believe, is to steal as much thunder from Microsoft as possible--therefore, release their updated computer lineup as close to the Windows 7 release date as possible. This is a marketing decision, and I believe Apple's marketing department has already come to this conclusion.
Think about the news articles--Windows 7 was released today, but Apple has countered this with a release of a whole new (read: updated) computer lineup! (Imac, Mac Mini, whatever laptop). With the right price cuts, I believe Apple will gain a lot more of the market this way.

Maybe I'm being Captain Obvious, but...oh well, I feel I needed to get this out of my head or off my chest, whatever you wanna call it.

If Apple held an event on Oct. 22 at somewhere like Moscone, that would be hilarious.

The tech press jumps to cover every single Apple event no matter the importance.

Well, I sure hope we don't have to wait two more weeks to find out! Couldn't Apple release the news tomorrow and be just as good at stealing the thunder? :D

Well, wouldn't the Macbook suddenly have comparable specs to the entry MBP?

An aluminum enclosure isn't worth hundreds more.
I'm hoping for a price drop on the replacement for the white MacBook. If that happens, I'd expect the loss of Firewire and maybe even the optical drive. In which case, the 13" MBP will still be superior.

I want a new MacBook to replace my aging 2006 model but I don't want to spend $999, or even close. $799 would be outstanding but I'll be truly shocked if that happens before 2012.

that's why some people suggested an update on 10/20;)

I believe Apple will do much better after he leaves. Those inside the cult think they would die without him.

Apple may not "die" without Steve Jobs (at least not right away), but the products will almost certainly suffer in terms of both innovation and quality. We've already seen what happens when management morons who don't understand "Apple" (and were probably selling shoes the week before) are left in charge - they nearly did kill Apple with their hopelessness. The share price will also fall quite dramatically for a while.

If they are having an event on the 13th the invites have to go out today. If they have an event on the 20th there are going to be no iMacs left to sell to customers for a week.

Windows 7 released on 22 October.
new iMacs released October 20.

Makes sense to me. :)

Wait, so many refreshes AND whoopi?

I'm not looking forward to this update!

Yep, she's the new character in the Mac vs PC adverts ... she's the new black Mac Mini. ;)

I called Apple customers relations yesterday, to see when the iMac I ordered back on Sept 18/09 should ship. After a few minutes of having to explain that I have neither the money nor the iMac all I wanted was a rough ideal of when I should expect it. I was told Oct 13th or sooner. I was also told that the delay was due to "stock shortages". take it for what it's worth. All I know is that Apple better have a damn good reason to keep customers waiting for the products they ordered and paid for.

May not mean much. Salespeople, ISP helpdesks, etc. often try to fob people off with "next week" as the answer so you won't bother annoying them for another 7 days. :)

On the UK store, add an Apple Remote and it says "Ships in 8 Business Days" otherwise change anything else and it changes to 3 days.

24 inch iMac warning

my 24 inch iMac overheated and killed the logic board after 4 months. took 7 SEVEN long weeks to repair at Cancom in Edinburgh Scotland (AppleCare? NEVER again)
i was told the 24 is too big and there were a dozen others in the shop.
beware when buying. doesnt happen to all of them but it is happening

new Macbook pro enhancements

one firewire 400 one firewire 800 2 usb2.0 1 usb 3.0
get rid of that stupid SD slot

I don't care if a desktop is thinner. I'm not going to be putting it in my pocket. You know what I want to see from Apple? A cheap mid-end tower. Tape an LCD to the side. Then you have a cheap iMac!

you might put it in a paper envelope... you never know.

If there's no special event, and there are several new products coming soon, I'd expect Apple to stagger the releases. MacBook tomorrow, Mac mini next week, iMac on the 20th. Or not.

lol. I made a wild guess I posted a few weeks ago on the iMac release date in Oz. I said it'll be on 20 October, so let's see if my non scientific guess is accurate.

its not that Windows 7 is coming out, a lot of new PC models are shipping October 22nd as well and they are supposed to be a lot cheaper than current models and a lot more powerful

The Mac Mini shipping has been moved back again to 3-5 days; if they stagger the releases, I assume the Mini gets it first. Supply is obviously dried up.

Will the iMac get touch capabilities? I see Gateway's just new AIO joins HP's and Dell's touch screens.

Touch looks like it will be in the mouse and/or keyboard. The MS demo of the technology is very impressive and this makes perfect sense, so you don't have to strain to reach the screen for long periods of time.

I also don't think MS would have leaked their own internal lab demos and test videos unless they knew Apple was getting ready to ship and wanted to steal their thunder.

With the Tablet looking increasingly like it will come in Q1 2010 it makes more sense for the major iMac update to happen now or a year from now. I don't see Apple wanting to update iMacs, launch a tablet and update Macbooks all in one event, it would be a circus.
