Dear all! I am new here, just decided to switch from PC to Mac... I wanted to buy Macbook pro 15 for 1699 + antiglare screen next week but following all the news I am confident that Apple is to release new iMac and macbook on Oct 20th...

Please let me know, do you think this will lower the current prices for Macbook pro??

I am in NY on October 20th - is it crowded during the first days of new stuff coming out?

Thanks in advance!!

PS. If anyone visited 5th ave. Apple Store lately PLEASE let me know is antiglare macbook pro available there??

The Macbook Pro is not due for an update until early next year.

I'm very confident we won't see CCFL in apple produtcs ever.

This would be non-sense for a desktop.
It can make (little) sense to shrink a desktop for design sake of the whole line, but splitting the line makes no sense, Apple doesn't introduce unnecessary splittings like this.
For the Air it was different 'cause it's a portable.
But for the iMac, why would anybody pick the slimmer-pricier one? I mean, some people WOULD pick it, but it would be a useless and confusing splitting, Apple usually doesn't do stuff like that......

I agree with you, I'm simply trying to rectify previous persuasive arguments about how we might see i7 in a new iMac. I don't think it is likely that Apple will offer two completely different CPU packages/motherboards in a new chassis. Which leads to the speculation of whether or not they will somehow be able to release i7 with no integrated graphics AND lower the price.

I think it's important to reiterate that Dell, HP, and others that have announced products with the new quad-core Core i7 processors for their notebooks have not begun shipping them. Most estimate at the end of the October. So even if Apple announced them tomorrow, they might not ship immediately. This could be why Apple hasn't announced them yet.

Oct 19

Salespeople will tell you anything just to get rid of you (once they've made the sale of course). Other people have reported similar stories over the last few weeks with earlier shipping dates. All the salespeople are really saying is "go away and phone us back if it's still not there in a week".

yes that is true, salespeople will tell you anything to get you to stop bothering them. However, since I can still cancel this order what good would it do to piss me off anymore then Apple already has? As I said, if the 19th of Oct is right I will have waited 31 days, for my iMac. So it really better be worth the wait, and all the head aches.

If the date is accurate, it makes sense because they likely will be available immediately on the 20th, so a ship date of the 19th won't affect the announcement.

Thanks! But what about the price? Will the '20th October' event decrease the price for the current Macbook Pro model?

We don't know, but I doubt it. Whenever the new Macbook models come out, it likely will just drop the price of the Macbook.

I agree.

It is good to clear the inventory as well, see still there are previous generation iMac are on the market.

It should be noted Gateways new ZX6810-01 which isnt shipping yet has a Q8200S running at 2.33 4mb L2 1333MHZ and a 4670 graphics chip from Ati. Apple could do something very similiar on the middle to top of the imac line.

It seems likely that we might see it during Windows 7 release - "and here we have the new iMac, Mac mini and Macbook.... oh, and one last thing... today we are also releasing new Snow Leopard.... Mac OS X 10.6.2 with all these new updates and features"

Of course, what might happen is we see new Macs this coming week... and then then 10.6.2 during Windows 7 release because it looks like the snow leopard update is going to be a big one!

In reality, Apple will probably want to ANNOUNCE this coming week... actually SHIP during the week beginning the 19th... which is the very same week other manufacturers will be announcing 4 week lead times on their new systems and the same week Win7 hits stores. And come the 22nd we see 10.6.2

So, this happened last time? As a new guy here I just don't remember, but there's something in my head says that Apple drop the prices for ALL models every single time they introduced new models.... I might be wrong, tell me pls....

If you watch the referbished page at the Apple Store sight, you can get some great deals. I had a buddy at Apple turn me on to that, and I've saved some great money. It's just and idea.

There are still previous generation 13" Aluminium MacBook (not "Pro") models being sold in some New Zealand stores alongside the newer "Pro" version, as well as two generations of white MacBook models.

Nope. The Microsoft announcement will be that they're dropping Windows 7 as the pile of trash it is and introducing a new era of operating systems that actually work ... and then introduce Steve Jobs to tell us all about it. ;)

Extremely highly unlikely. Apple changes prices on only two occassions (and never every time) - the release of new models and just before the release of new models to get rid of old stock.

If you want a cheaper Mac, your only real bet is to try the refurb part of the online Apple Store. Some resellers also sell machines and software a little cheaper than Apple does.

Thank you for your expanded response. But as one poster pointed out, I can't see Apple buying a processor over $500 to put into Mac Mini or iMac computers that range from $599 to $1500 in final price. And if the iMac version is going to go over $2,000, well that's just out of the price range of the market right now.
I've already addressed the price issue in a previous post and it looks like the Core i7 Mobile is at least possible in the mid and high-end iMacs.

https://forums.macrumors.com/posts/8624346/

As for competitive price points, note that Dell is selling notebook computers using the new Core i7QM starting at $999 and going up to $1399 in their high-end, "gamer" notebook (the Studio XPS 16 with 15.6 inch WLED LCD @1680x945 and the ATI Mobility RADEON® HD 4670 with 1GB VRAM). While Apple won't meet those prices in a notebook computer configuration they should at least be able to sell an iMac that uses the Core i7QM for something that starts around $1800 (the current low-end for an iMac that includes discrete graphics).

In any case, I've never even suggested that the Core i7 Mobile would be used in the Mac mini. In fact, I've said that there won't be any significant upgrade in the Mac mini until well into next year. Both it and the MacBook will continue using the Core 2 Duo and the NVIDIA 9400M.

This is the part that is difficult to swallow. I suppose that Apple could make two different motherboards fit into a new enclosure, but they have not done it before that I am aware of in the iMac line. It also leaves questions about the thinner argument, which might, or might not be achieved through elimination of CFLs in the display.

This leaves us with a 2nd option, which is that the current iMac soldiers on at a new price point and Apple releases an "iMac Air" or whatever they end up calling it. Basically a split in the iMac line similar to the split in the Macbook line.

I think that this is more probable than them designing two different enclosures for a new iMac or designing an enclosure for the new iMac that can accommodate multiple motherboards/chipsets....
I've already suggested (multiple times) that Apple may keep the current low-end iMac with the Core 2 Duo and NVIDIA 9400M in its existing design and configuration. Thus, they won't necessarily have to produce a redesigned motherboard and case for the low-end iMac.

This would be a bit unusual, but it's a possibility that might even allow then to lower the entry-level price on the iMac. Now I'm sure many are going to scream, "Who would buy last year's design?" Well that could be part of the plan, many would want to upgrade to the newly redesigned models that will use the Core i7 Mobile. It also plays the clock speeds nicely since the Core 2 Duo's higher clock speeds could still be seen as a "consolation" (so to speak) for those that can't afford the new Core i7 Mobile. Besides, it does seem that Apple will be offering a new keyboard and mouse and that will refresh the lineup even if they don't do a redesign on the low-end models.

I'm not saying this will happen, just that it may be a way for Apple to bridge the current situation with the relatively high price of the Core i7 Mobile and the fact that it can't use integrated graphics. If they don't change the appearance that much then most people probably wouldn't even notice the difference between the old and new industrial design.

I think it is interesting to speculate, certainly I do!

I am actually more interested in what Apple will do if they do NOT do i7. It seems as though any new case design re-using C2D is a huge blunder on their part.

On that last point, I agree 100%. That's why if they are really going to redesign the iMac then they pretty much have to use the Core i7 Mobile (IMO). Furthermore, the only alternative would seem to be next year's Arrandale, but I don't see any chance that Apple would limit the entire iMac line to dual-cores throughout 2010. Perhaps they will use Arrandale in a low-end model, but not across the entire iMac product line.

To me the bigger deal is not just a C2D being off the mark now, its that all through the holiday's and into next year they would still be on C2D.

It just doesn't seem like today's Apple to just roll over and play meh.

I think they will make things more interesting than just that... but who knows? That's what makes Apple watching fun, they could just bore or they could amaze out of left field.

Many of these posts make a ton of assumptions about what they will or won't do, or are capable of. Obviously, they can't just make Intel chip part numbers out of thin air, but there is a ton of play in how things get implemented. They may drop a Mid range tower on us, they may make a fatter iMac with a Lynnfield in it... probably not, it will probably be thinner and i7 mobile, but its fun to speculate.

Well, I hope we find out soon before I am in need of a white jacket with ties down the back...

Plenty of people would go for this...I mean just ask yourself who would buy a whitebook anymore? Well they still sell those...and have continued to sell them and even seem to be upgrading the same design. So its very plausible to see a iMac with the "old" design without the i7's. If that is what they choose to use in the high end models.

Here's another possibility.

Apple carries the 20" iMac over with the current design and drops the price. This would be the only 20" iMac available and might come in two different models.

The 24" iMac gets a bump to i7. Entry level machine could possibly be $100 less than the current model if it had the entry level i7 and a very inexpensive graphics solution. This would be a big cut in their margin, but they could go this route, taking a huge hit on profit in the short term, but recouping over time as prices come down for the new components.

As a matter of fact, something like Blu-Ray would be a perfect way to step consumers out of the entry level 10% profit machine and into one Apple actually makes money on. $1799 iMac with better graphics and BD-Rom capable drive. Add $200 more in component costs and charge $400 more for it. They would still sell a ton.

Personally I would love to see 26" but I don't think Apple will push the market on that point right now as the economy is still smarting pretty badly.
