Well, as I said in a previous post, I've had to reinstall OS X from scratch as it wouldn't work after a stalled update. I'm back in and have 10.4.2 on, and what a difference.

Mac OS X Tiger is no longer a steaming pile of an OS. It's about three months late, but Tiger's finally here and it's looking good.

Is it possible that whatever problem caused the update to stall was also causing issues with the rest of the OS? 10.4.0 and 10.4.1 have been fine for me on three Macs.

Both you guys have the same mac as me :D :)

17" Powerbook 1.33

its been really great so far, how has yours been?..

ive had some stress full times with it, when i was in 10.3.9
my HD would make a funny sound like, click click click once i heard that
sound i would have maybe 1min to save my stuff b4 my mac would freeze
and id have to force a powerdown. i normaly leave my mac on all day and all night and one time i woke up at 3am and heard my PB making a tone from the HD. made me pi$$ my pants!!!. but now that im in tiger its gone away.
:p

i found that if i tap my PB just above where the HD is when it makes that sound that it seems to fix it..

***Ive also noticed that Safari and my internet is so much faster and snappy with this 10.4.2 update :)

I have a logitech mouse, the scrolling speed preference appears for me, and does work - slows / speeds up scrolling

Also, if I click the down arrow on the mouse ( next to the scroll wheel ) the Task Switch pop up shows too!

I've got the preference pane with scroll speed and "Primary Mouse Button" options showing - with a MacMice USB mouse. I haven't checked to see if my PowerBook has it with the MacMice BT mouse, but I did notice that it seemed less jerky than usual (as in, you could actually use the damn thing).

Bet it doesn't show battery status, though.

Why would Apple have scroll speed in their pane unless they were going to support third-party mice...

Working good on my eMac the widget manager is really useful, hopefully should be a very good update..

ShadOW ;)

I think the Next thing Apple needs to work on is their Mouse design.
im sorry, but the one button mouse is just a waste of wires and plastic.

This is a nice new and needed feature:

Now THAT is the Apple will all know and love.

As expected, many bugs were fixed and this was a good release. Still finding bugs not repaired from my radar reports to Apple, some of which are remarkably sloppy and Microsoft-esque, but at least it appears Apple sees that the .0 release of Tiger was crap and is working hard to get it up to (normal) Apple standards.

If you are already using Panther, then no, I don't think it's worth it.

Panther is a great OS, and in a way better than Tiger, as it is in its 10th incarnation, whereas Tiger is only in its 3rd.

Panther is missing APIs used in Tiger, so it's only a matter of time before you NEED Tiger if you want to install new apps. For the average user right now, Panther is still pretty good. I love my Tiger though. :p

This may have been posted before, but if you click the icon for a widget in widget manager the widget is created :)

Widget bar is now completely bulky and unnecessary.

Apple DOES support 3rd party mice.

"8. Can I use a two-button mouse?

Mac OS X offers built-in support for USB mice and keyboards. With a two-button or scroll wheel mouse, you can take advantage of convenient features of the operating system without touching the keyboard. If you prefer a split ergonomic keyboard, just plug it in. You don’t need to install any additional software or configure drivers."

From http://www.apple.com/switch/questions/

Just finished installing on my 17" 1.67 PB and everything runs great. No problems with Transparent Dock, Studio MX or any of the other problems I've read about. The new scrolling in Safari is super nice as well.

More RAM and 10.4.2 - it's been a good day.

OK, no problems on my system with the upgrade, haven't really noticed any problems with iPhoto 5 every anyway so I don't know if it's just my copy or what as most people seem to have the colour bug.

Safari is much faster at scrolling, the widget manager pretty much makes the tray unnecessary and I like that - the tray just annoyed me. Upped the RAM from 256 to 512 (going to 768 was going to cost nearly 3 times more than what I paid so thanks but no thanks) so I'm not sure how much of the very obvious speed boost is due to the RAM and how much is due to the update but damn this is now a very fine machine to use - up from a very good machine...

The resolution of the RSS screensaver is much improved and looks quite stunning - I always found it to be a bit grainy.

Mail is much quicker loading, checking mail, just generally doing it's thing.

OK, what I now want to see is an iPhoto update that will improve performance - it's quicker now with more RAM but surely Apple can speed things up a bit.

I'm disappointed in 10.4.2 - I find Mail to be just as slow and useless with an IMAP server as it was before. The only thing it's really good at is mangling attachments.

Any rumours about when 10.4.3 is due?

Have you people noticed that now, with a scroll wheel mouse you can actually scroll inside Apple's Widgets? That's preety cool, but Page Up, Page Down, Home, End, and the arrow keys don't work... Anyway, I have a scroll wheel mouse so I'm fine with that... ;)
Actually, this was added in 10.4.1.

@Thumper, although I do agree a redesign of their mouse would be great, I still like the 1 button mouse ideal. Why, you ask? Well too many people in the PC world rely on the mouse too extensively. keyboard commands are so much more efficient and much faster in most uses, once you know them. For contextual menu's it isnt difficult to press one key along with the mouse is it? It was awkward to use the middle finger for a second mouse button when they debuted. multiple buttons to be programmable is great but mostly used with gaming, unless you have an artists or video pro's mouse hardware specific for those purposes.

Would most typical users take the time to learn keyboard shortcuts though, or would they prefer to right click and select from there?

Most of us know a lot of keyboard shortcuts, but if you asked one of your parents, or a younger brother/sister will they have any idea?

Nope but then again, right-clicking isn't hugely intuitive to them either. I've lost count of the people in my office (using Windows) who go up to the Edit menu everytime they want to cut or paste.

Try talking a non-expert user through a task in Windows that requires both left and right clicking. Their first few left-clicks will be automatic but then you'll introduce a right click. After that, everytime you say 'click' they'll stop and clarify which you meant. My mother and sister do far better with their one button Apple mouse than they ever did with their 2-button one. And to be honest, after spending the first month on my Powerbook with a 2-button mouse plugged in, I very rarely bother now. I've got used to the one-click system.

I pretty much use a combination of half and half - using keyboard shortcuts for within the OS and Apple programs, and then using right click for other programs as they often don't follow the same structure and I find them a pain to learn.

I don't think I could switch to an Apple mouse quite yet - and without a scroll wheel I don't think I ever could.

It should work again by deleting the .plist preferences file for the translator widget. Find that file with spotlight ("widget translation plist"). Close the widget before deleting the file.
